spuiszis··on Deutsche Bank to Pay Record $2.5B to Resolve Libor
These are outliers though. Aside from insider trading cases, the norm is institution pays $X to settle and everything goes away (tax-deductible btw).
spuiszis··on $1.6B in funding and $7B in exits: Chicago tech just had its best year ever
Quite the contrary. CPS is making basic computer science a part of the K-12 curriculum, starting as earlier as Kindergarten[1]. It will take decades to see the actual results from this but its helping put the city on the right path.

spuiszis··on BPA alternative disrupts normal brain-cell growth, study says
“A lot of the alternative chemicals have not been adequately tested because they don’t have to be,” said lead author Deborah Kurrasch. “A compound is considered safe (by the Food and Drug Administration) until proven otherwise.”

I'm no healthcare policy expert but this sounds like the FDA has it backwards.

spuiszis··on U.S. ends TARP with $15.3B profit
Numbers without sources have no value in an internet forum but from what I'm taking from your argument (please correct me if I'm wrong), is that: "TARP worked because, housing prices have increased across the board and as a result, the whole country is richer and everyone is better off"

You're definitely right about prices have definitely gone up[1] (side note: Case-Shiller Index isn't close to 64% nationally), but all of this is all on paper. Residential home sales are still at '08/'09 levels; it's hard to translate those paper gains into liquidity [2]. I also agree with the low mortgage rates comment, however, all of the QE money is going everywhere but the housing market. Even if you have a stellar credit rating, it will be incredibly difficult to get a loan. Hell, even Ben Bernanke couldn't refinance his mortgage, which is both ironic and absolutely insane when you think about it [3]. Six years post-TARP, the housing market and American economy, still have plenty of structural issues. TARP was a monumental decision that will forever affect every part of America and housing prices cannot be the only metric or lens that we judge TARP's performance on.

Where are you getting profitability from?
spuiszis··on U.S. ends TARP with $15.3B profit
Homeowners aren't benefiting, they've underwater on their mortgages and are selling for pennies on the dollar. It's Blackstone and a number of other clever players who've been at this for years [1].

spuiszis··on U.S. ends TARP with $15.3B profit
What's important is the amount of money relative to the size of the institution. Discover and Capital One were a faction of the size of WF + Citi. In 2008, WF had $1.2 Trillion in assets[1], Discover has $78bn today (had trouble hunting down the '08 #).

> Imagine, if you will, that your son is taken against his will by say, Iran, because your son has ties to someone who threw a grenade that killed an Iranian. Your son is tortured in much the same way the report states.

It's much worse than that, we'll just flat out kill you with a drone strike, even if you're an American citizen[1][2].

spuiszis··on Time Warner Cable Shareholders Approve Sale to Comcast
I have Comcast residential and went for 19 days without internet service in August. Took ~10 calls and 5 cancelled service rep trips (by them), before it got fixed.
spuiszis··on Time Warner Cable Shareholders Approve Sale to Comcast
This deal is sadly going to go through. It's all based on anchoring and based on the industry's first "offer" to the FCC and other regulators: 1. Let us create a "fast" lane and a "slow" lane. This allows Telcos and ISPs to raise rates and gain even more power than we already had. 2. Let us, as the #1/2 player in an oligopoly, merge with the #3/4 "competitor". This allows us to provide better service, etc, etc, etc.

#1 is ridiculous and the public push-back has been strong that it likely won't happen (let's pray to God it doesn't). However, in the context of asking for industry-wide de-regulation (that still might go through), a merger between industry leaders, which happens all the time, doesn't seem that ridiculous. Plus, having an FCC chairman who used to be your head lobbyist helps the merger even more[1].

spuiszis··on What are hedge funds, and what social functions do they serve?
Thank you for catching that.
spuiszis··on What are hedge funds, and what social functions do they serve?
Good point. Although, I'd argue that more often than not, institutions (pension funds, funds of funds, etc.) are the ones investing in hedge funds rather than individuals. Usually there is a pretty high minimum investment (and needing to know the right people) that you won't be able to meet, unless you are a very high net worth individual. For example (ps this was a pretty big deal last week), CALPERs the largest U.S. pension fund, is leaving the hedge fund space and re-allocating the 10% of assets they allocated to it, to other strategies like Private Equity[1].

spuiszis··on BuzzFeed: An Open Letter to Ben Horowitz
The a16z website shows the current portfolio (most recent, un-exited investment) and does not display their entire investment history. If you check out their Crunchbase profile[1], they have already had some big exits with Groupon, Zynga, Skype and Instagram, which is quite impressive since they only started investing 3 years ago. I'm sure there have been some other medium/large M&A liquidity events as well but it usually takes 3-5 years to figure out if your VC portfolio is any good and 7+ years to realize any returns. LPs know this and funds usually have a 10 year life cycle, sometimes with options to extend it a year or two [2].

spuiszis··on Wall Street Banks and Private Equity Firms Compete for Young Talent
> Analysts know that the internal track will end at the associate level (or, more likely, they'd be booted out after two years with no internal promotion to associate at all) > What's interesting is that a similar thing happens after two years as a private equity associate, in that almost all PE associates are booted out after two years

Many PE shops, VC funds and banks do this because they want you to get an MBA. This is why many of the associate hiring positions are described as pre-MBA associate and post-MBA associate. Post-MBA associates are the ones that will go onto internal promotions and potentially the partner track.

spuiszis··on Ask HN: How do you keep your address book up to date?
In addition to your typical Outlook, i0S contacts, etc., there are a services that come to mind:

Plaxo (Plaxo.com founded by Sean Parker) has been around for awhile. I used this for some time but have recently discontinued my account.

Brewster (https://www.brewster.com/) is new on the block and I also think Fred Wilson had a blog post on them earlier this year.

spuiszis··on Ask HN: Is really Y Combinator selection process fair?
Unfortunately, very few things are in life are actually "fair". "Fair" is also very relative term. The definition of “fair” means one thing to you, one thing to Y-Combinator and something very different to an applicant who got an interview. There are several hundred people across the world right now who had the wind blown out of their sails like you. While I do not personally know anyone at Y-Combinator, from everything I have read, I imagine this is the best system that they have at the moment and are continually refining it. That being said, like anything man-made, it is not perfect and great entrepreneurs will always fall through the cracks. Prove them wrong and be one of those that fell through the cracks.
