sprucely··on Show HN: Would love some feedback on my weekend project (built in 3 days)
Small typo of "monitor" under Businesses... "Team clerk can help manage your team and moitor their progress."
sprucely··on Bad thoughts can’t make you sick, that’s just magical thinking
There are numerous studies on mindfulness, including its physical affects on the brain. But there doesn't seem to be much definitive work on concepts such as the "mindbody" as promoted in John Sarno's The Divided Mind. It is always seductive to think that there is a simple solution, but I don't think that is reason enough to be as dismissive as this article is. There are also numerous studies on the physical impacts of stress.
sprucely··on Cops to grab unlocked stuff from cars in East Rock area, for safekeeping
> think of it as them saving themselves some work and money.

Not every unlocked car containing valuables is a guaranteed theft report, so rummaging through every unlocked car with visible valuables sounds to me like potentially more work and money.

sprucely··on The UK is replacing roundabouts with traffic lights; US is doing the opposite
I drive through that particular roundabout multiple times a day. At least 5% of the vehicles I encounter there will stop and yield to other traffic that is only approaching the roundabout, or more maddeningly, stop in the middle when they see traffic approaching.
sprucely··on The world needs at least 600M new jobs in the next decade for young people
Meanwhile the more menial / labor-intensive jobs are being replaced by automation. I read somewhere that automation was supposed to be the great liberator, enabling an ever-increasing amount of leisure time. But at some point attitudes started shifting so that people must justify their existence by continuously working hard; and if things don't happen to work out for them, well they just weren't motivated enough. This attitude is apparent in our [US] welfare system which has a huge administrative overhead in place to prevent freeloading.
sprucely··on Show HN: No Ads. No Permissions. Just Drums
A really cool enhancement to this would be if it had an option to evolve the selections each measure according to the rules of Conway's Game of Life.
sprucely··on Iowa Makes a Bold Admission: We Need Fewer Roads
Are you sure about 50 mph being a safe speed? It doesn't take much washboarding to all but eliminate traction.
sprucely··on LightSail Test Mission Declared Success; First Image Complete
Are you sure about this? If you have a sail in a heliocentric orbit, I would think you could increase or decrease your orbital speed based on the direction you deflect the solar wind, thus slowly increasing/decreasing altitude. I would assume it's possible to modify orbits around other bodies in a similar fashion.
sprucely··on Why Technology Will Never Fix Education
Something stood out to me regarding the anecdote about students not following through with online learning courses. Could it be that students lose interest because of the curriculum? I thought the Hole-in-the-Wall project highlighted the importance of exploration and play in self-directed learning. It seems to me that curriculums and spontaneity don't mix well.
sprucely··on What People Around the World Dream About
That seems to fit with my experiences of hypnagogia being drowned out by awareness of my environment.
sprucely··on The Death of 'Bae'
That's so jar. No really, I had a friend who tried to make "jar" the new "cool". It didn't catch on. But you're probably right. I could see a market for the notoriety, or at least self-satisfaction, of being the one who coined a popular term or phrase.
sprucely··on The Next Generation of Voting Systems May Be Open-Source
https://raweb.inria.fr/rapportsactivite/RA2013/dice/uid32.ht...

It's even called, "BitBallot."

[edit] Upon further searching, it's not clear what, if any, work is being done on this.

sprucely··on The Dangers of Eating Late at Night
It's probably a number of factors. A couple of possibilities I can think of are Americans' sense of value (get as much as you can for your money,) and a general addiction to the sensation of a full stomach.
sprucely··on Your brain makes decisions while you sleep
I think that is hypnagogia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia. And it doesn't necessarily require environmental noise to be triggered. There's a lot of material out there on it being linked to lucid dreaming.
sprucely··on Intel Designs a Safe Meeting Place for Private Data
What is the invention? I recall reading, some 15 to 20 years ago, about the difficulty of self-verifying systems. This security chip verifies the bios is not altered, but what verifies the security chip?

I don't know if it's possible, but I think a more ground-breaking product would be to provide a way for customers to validate assertions about the entire process (design, manufacture, distribution and installation). Otherwise the customer is still left blindly trusting corporations and their undisclosed interests.

sprucely··on End to end encrypted email, based in Sweden
Rather than use java, why not use a javascript implementation such as http://openpgpjs.org ?
sprucely··on Github Down
Bitbucket is also down.
