springogeek··on Show HN: DOME, a framework for making 2D games with Wren
Everyone's support has been fantastic. I've now scheduled a gamejam in March to give people an opportunity to try out the framework: https://itch.io/jam/domejam

Thank you very much for your insights.

Love2D and DOME do similar things for their languages, but I think there's still some key differences in our design sensibility and mission.

My hope is that DOME provides a set of sane defaults for a number of projects (game jams, lighter games, etc), and it gives you enough features that you can implement whatever you wish on top. Alternatively, it is open source (and MIT licensed), so you can hack with the internals for customised functionality.

I hope you feel like trying DOME at some point. I'd be curious to know what your experience is like.

I've not run into too many, you just have to be careful around re-entrancy from Wren->C->Wren, and slot allocation in foreign constructors.

There's some big stuff in the pipeline, so I'm sure it'll be enhanced soon enough.

It'll be a while, but I think the next step is a move towards web. I've built it to run in browsers before, but that was a while ago.

Because DOME sits on top of SDL2, porting to other platforms shouldn't be too difficult in the future. Lofty goals!

springogeek··on Show HN: DOME, a framework for making 2D games with Wren
Yep, of course!

TIC-80 is very well done, but it's a more constrained system (intentionally so).

DOME was meant to be the foundation for larger projects :)

springogeek··on Show HN: DOME, a framework for making 2D games with Wren
DOME is partially inspired by Love2D, although I've tried to approach things a bit differently. Love2D seems to expose a lot of SDL's underlying functions and concepts, whereas DOME aims to abstract a lot of that away.

I plan to, now things have stabilised. I didn't have a lot of personal reach to get people's attention. Maybe now though...?

Thank you for trying it! I hadn't tested with the WSL, so I'm relieved it worked there as well. I put a lot of work into making it build from scratch easily.

I started this project because I had been making small games with the PICO-8 and Lua, but I wanted to work on larger projects. There's Love2D, but I find Lua tricky at times, since you often have to reinvent OOP-structures and it's disconcerting with 1-indexed arrays.

Wren is closer to more classical programming languages, so I thought I'd give it a go. :)

HTTP is tricky since the protocol is quite complex. I think it would require an external library. However, creating an interface for net sockets wouldn't be too hard. I'd love to enable multiplayer games with UDP sockets in the future :)

The Wren runtime is very extensible, so if I can code it with C, it can be made available to users of DOME!

springogeek··on Show HN: DOME, a framework for making 2D games with Wren
That's very strange. What phone do you use?

It's built from a template, so I wouldn't expect many problems.

springogeek··on Show HN: DOME, a framework for making 2D games with Wren
Thank you for the kind observation!

I'm hoping to improve the visuals, as more games get made with it :)

springogeek··on Ask HN: Solo devs, how do you plan your development?
I keep a TODO list in Google Keep, and I am forever shuffling entries around as priorities change.

For some projects, the issues on github also suffice to keep track of things to do.

springogeek··on قلب: a non-ASCII programming language written in Arabic
It is beautiful, but it's a barrier also. I don't think you should be barred from learning to code because you don't speak a language which uses the Latin/ASCII character set.
springogeek··on I Am the Cheapest Bastard in Indie Games
Games aren't just simple software. All the non-code assets (graphics, music, writing) take just as much, if not more, time and money to produce. The amount of work to produce software generally hasn't changed much in the past couple of decades, but the systems that games are expected to run on get more complicated (from being higher definition and more powerful), further requiring extra people to get it over the finish line.
springogeek··on Ask HN: Game devs, what is the hardest part about designing an AI for your game?
The risk of overcomplicating. You can put a lot of effort into detailed game AI which just makes for a hugely unfun experience. Something simple or predictable often leads to be better gameplay.
springogeek··on Partial password usability sucks
This sort of thing needs to be built into password managers.
springogeek··on Rules for a Better Conference Name Badge (2017)
I'll admit, I missed this in my speedier skim of the article. Apologies.
springogeek··on Rules for a Better Conference Name Badge (2017)
I'd also suggest adding preferred pronouns.
springogeek··on McDonald's Says Goodbye Cashiers, Hello Kiosks
I love this system. I've had some pretty poor experiences with custom orders when dealing with an employee. The kiosks make the anxiety of ordering much more tolerable, as I can specify precisely what I want, rather than worrying about reducing the risk of an order being misinterpreted.
springogeek··on Crafting Interpreters
The same was true of the author's previous book, Game Programming Patterns, which is now complete and fully published.

springogeek··on TIC-80, a fantasy computer to learn programming
It also adds a couple of convenience language features and a simplified API, which is why it appears "BASIC-like".

springogeek··on Show HN: Monica, an open-source CRM to manage friends and family
A couple quick suggestions:

Allow the default currency for debts to change :) I'm based in England, so Dollars don't help me.

On the People list, make the whole list entry clickable, not just the name.

The list of "Country" is not sorted and slow to load.

Can we add other kinds of relatives, not just SOs and children. What about siblings or Uncles?

springogeek··on Show HN: Monica, an open-source CRM to manage friends and family
I'd like both actually :)
springogeek··on Show HN: Does it use Cloudflare?
I was literally just saying to someone that this sort of tool needed to be made. Good job!
springogeek··on U.S. Homeland Security employees locked out of computer networks
I'm pretty sure when you configure certificate pinning you can also specify an expiry date. Party A would just adjust the expiry time to match their cert expiry and both parties are happy.
springogeek··on PICO-8 lighting, part 1: thin dark line
Plus, there seems to be a small recent trend of releasing games for free and charging a small donation amount for an instruction manual, as has been done with The Lair[1] and Galactic Wars[2]

springogeek··on PICO-8 lighting, part 1: thin dark line
We in the PICO-8 community also have both a Slack and Discord where you can ask for advice and show off cool projects :)
springogeek··on Crashes, Hangs and Crazy Images by Adding Zero: Fuzzing OpenGL Shader Compilers
I wouldn't say content-free, but content-lite. It still covers the basic ideas and tools used, but doesn't go in depth yet.

Disclaimer: The article author was both a lecturer and supervisor to me during my undergraduate degree, but I was in no way involved in the work discussed in the article.

springogeek··on Ask HN: Where can I learn about deploying production environments?
Thanks, I'll give these a look!
