spookie··on Gaussian Splatting – A$AP Rocky "Helicopter" music video
This is a great question, would love some some feedback on this.

I assume they stuck with realsense for proper depth maps. However, those are both limited to a 6 meters range, and their depth imaging isn't able to resolve features smaller than their native resolution allows (gets worse after 3m too, as there is less and less parallax among other issues). I wonder how they approached that as well.

spookie··on If you put Apple icons in reverse it looks like someone getting good at design
Same thought. The one on the left just conveys "notes" to me. Middle actually seems to be about a more "well put together" document. A fountain pen by itself doesn't necessarily mean documents to me, but signing them.

As you, never seen these icons in my entire life.

spookie··on PCs refuse to shut down after Microsoft patch
GNOME devs really are special. I wonder why.
spookie··on STFU
Just get the shower style ones.
spookie··on Zen-C: Write like a high-level language, run like C
Yes, it is actively being developed.

Quite easy to make apps with it and GNOME Builder makes it really easy to package it for distribution (creates a proper flatpak environment, no need to make all the boilerplate). It's quite nice to work with, and make stuff happen. Gtk docs and awful deprecation culture (deprecate functions without any real alternative) are still a PITA though.

spookie··on Windows 8 Desktop Environment for Linux
I do use one that converts to a tablet and has a stylus. But I have to do a lot of serious drawing for a living. I also appreciate coming close to book note taking without having to print stuff.

It really depends on what you do.

Tbf the mobile OS with a similar design language was the best mobile UI I ever had the pleasure of using. Last time I felt impressed by Microsoft but alas.
spookie··on Common Rust Lifetime Misconceptions
Fair, bad example.
spookie··on Common Rust Lifetime Misconceptions
As "unsafe". An example would be of how AMD GPUs some time ago didn't free a programs' last rendered buffers and you could see the literal last frame in its entirety. Fun stuff.

Could've been clearer above.

spookie··on Microsoft Copilot AI Comes to LG TVs, and Can't Be Deleted
You can convert dolby vision content while preserving the enhancement layer on Linux, and play that. It's kinda of a pain but easily automated.
spookie··on Common Rust Lifetime Misconceptions
A memory leak can be unsafe though.
spookie··on Young journalists expose Russian-linked vessels off the Dutch and German coast
Yeah, I do realize that after so many points being neglected over supposed fallacies. From the various comments I'm pretty sure they believe there'll be an end to these fantasies Putin has. But it's impossible trying to argue when the retort is either denial or listing fallacies out of thin air. Another problem they had was over the "naïveté or agenda" point I've made, which they took as an attack on themselves. And honestly if you take the latter personally it doesn't mean the former wasn't an option. And as you've said, we are at war, you have to assume some have an agenda. Not necessarily them.

Still, I do believe that some commenters are just being naive, others taken for a ride, and then there are bots. But I always assume there is a person on the other end if their account isn't new. Hence trying to reach an understanding.

Either way, leaving such posts unanswered always gives a false sense of a common view on a topic, and its good to just demonstrate not everybody agrees.

spookie··on Young journalists expose Russian-linked vessels off the Dutch and German coast
Look, I'm talking from the point of view that Russia will continue to invade others within Europe unless they're stopped. Which is, from what I gathered until now, your fearmongering scenario. I think my responses will make a lot more sense like that.

Maybe the difficulty in conveying thoughts into text struck again. I don't know. I haven't been trying to be malicious or distort your take, really. As I see it we have just been talking past each-other. Perhaps my fault.

Were you saying all this time they won't stop in Ukraine itself? Agreed, if that's the case.

> Obviously that's not the only thing that matters...

Of course it's not all that matters, I have just exaggerated it in an attempt to convey how much their past actions paint that picture. That they will continue doing the same even if absurd. Again, not that clear.

spookie··on Young journalists expose Russian-linked vessels off the Dutch and German coast
> I did not claim that Russia would stop anything and even if Russia did attack several neighbours it is irrelevant. (...) My claim is that Russia is not going to invade or start a war with the EU/NATO/Western Europe (and that, consequentially the "Russia scare" is mostly fearmongering). I don't think that they ever had a plan to, but in any case their campaign in Ukraine has shown that they don't have the capability.

The only thing that matters is that they have invaded several neighbors over the last few decades. Failing to accomplish their goals hasn't stopped them. Just look at how divided Georgia is, or how the first Chechen war went.

Also, within the context of "fearmongering" you state, the fear is that they wouldn't stop in Ukraine. Yes, you are trying to say Russia will stop, that they won't invade anyone else. But history shows otherwise. That is why I did state above "The only thing that matters is that they have to invaded several neighbors... ".

> Reasoning and trying to see through the haze is not "having an agenda".

I applaud you trying to see through the fog, but I fear you are overcomplicating things and being naive at the same time. Not necessarily having an agenda.

spookie··on Young journalists expose Russian-linked vessels off the Dutch and German coast
Russia hasn't stopped invading their neighbors ever since the fall of the soviet union. To state they will stop doing so while Putin is in power is either naive or on purpose to propel some agenda.

spookie··on Google unkills JPEG XL?
Well, the first public implementation dates to 2020. And, the Cpp choice is obvious, simpler integration with the majority of existing image processing libs, tools and utilities. Not to mention GUI toolkits.

Nonetheless, we should really bear in mind how entrenched Cpp is. If you normalize CVEs by language popularity Java looks downright dangerous!

Exactly.
spookie··on Python is not a great language for data science
Even when using some game engine you need some prior knowledge. Otherwise you are just throwing stuff at the wall and see if it sticks.
spookie··on Python is not a great language for data science
I really doubt this.

Even through UE blueprints (assuming the most high level abstraction here) you will come across the need to perform calculations with matrices. While a lot is abstracted away, you still need to know about coordinate spaces, quirks around order of operations, etc.

spookie··on AI has a deep understanding of how this code works
None of that matters. The header is there, in writing, and discussed in the PR. It is acknowledged by both parties and the author gives a clumsy response for its existence. The PR is simply tainted by this alone, not to mention other pain points.

You may not consider this problematic. But maintainers of this project sure do, given this was one of the immediate concerns of theirs.

spookie··on Ask HN: How are Markov chains so different from tiny LLMs?
It was in the training data. There is implicit information in the way you present each addition. The context provided in the training data is what allows relationships to be perceived and modelled.

If you don't have that in your data you don't have the results.

spookie··on Gemini 3
Does anyone trust benchmarks at this point? Genuine question. Isn't the scientific consensus that they are broken and poor evaluation tools?
spookie··on Steam Machine
There are open source solutions out there. If anything there is less friction now.
spookie··on Steam Machine
Eh multiplayer games are doomed.

Computer vision based cheats using an external machine that records the game's final rendered frames, process them with specialized YOLO models, and control "mices" and "controllers" to aim for you already exist.

If the aim for kernel level anti-cheats was to combat cheating, they have failed and are completely worthless.

spookie··on How the UK lost its shipbuilding industry
Hungary is facing a stagnant economy, with poorly targetted subsidies and overall high corruption. Inflation was already high since 2019 compared to other OECD countries with similar GDP per capita (checked Estonia, Poland, Portugal and Slovakia). They have also continued to engage with Russia economically despite sanctions (even outside the energy sector) leading to sometimes having exemptions or attempting to use that as leverage against EU policies. All of this has further destabilized their economy, given neighbours will hesitate in trade.

Hungary is the worst example you could pick from the EU.

spookie··on FFmpeg to Google: Fund us or stop sending bugs
Agree in some ways. Still, discussing the nitty gritty is superfluous, the important underlying message you are making is more existential.

Open source software is critical infrastructure at this point. Maintainers should be helped out, at least by their largest users. If free riding continues, and maintainers' burden becomes too large, supply chain attacks are bound to happen.

spookie··on How the UK lost its shipbuilding industry
You should take a look at the price of food after Russia launched their full scale invasion in Ukraine. A significant increase, 15% at its peak and lowering thereafter to about 5%. Still, it is above pandemic levels.

You rise food prices and there's a domino effect on the economy, everything else also increases in price.

It is important the EU is able to produce its own food at acceptable prices.
