spjt··on Google is staring to force age verification
This happened to me a long time ago... well not me but my kid. She made a youtube video and got flagged for not being old enough.
spjt··on Andrej Karpathy – It will take a decade to work through the issues with agents
Good luck cracking down when local inference gets cheap.
spjt··on AWS outage shows internet users 'at mercy' of too few providers, experts say
I don't think it wants to. Ask any on-call engineer or support tech how they felt when, after having their phone blow up at 1am because everything is falling apart, they found out that this was an AWS-wide outage.
spjt··on Andrej Karpathy – It will take a decade to work through the issues with agents
The thing about AGI is that if it's even possible, it's not coming before the money runs out of the current AI hype cycle. At least we'll all be able to pick up a rack of secondhand H100's for a tenner and a pack of smokes to run uncensored diffusion models on in a couple years. The real devastation will be in the porn industry.
spjt··on Andrej Karpathy – It will take a decade to work through the issues with agents
I love vibe coding because it does the things I hate really well, like meeting test coverage requirements and writing doc comments.

The difference with fusion is that we have a very good understanding of how fusion works, and exactly what we need to figure out how to do, to make it a viable energy source. It's basically just an engineering problem, albeit a very difficult one due to the extreme conditions. AGI is more like developing warp drive. With AGI, we really have no idea how the brain works or any clue of what problems need to be solved. It's basically just like the underpants gnomes.

Phase 1: Buying more GPU to increase the number of parameters in a LLM Phase 2: ??? Phase 3: AGI

AGI may come anywhere between next week, 1000 years in the future, or never. Anyone who claims to have any idea is full of shit, because we don't even know what problems we need to solve to get there. If we develop a good model of how human cognition works at a biological level, there is at least a direction, but that isn't going to be coming out of some AI hype factory with a datacenter full of H100's making videos of anthropomorphic cats working as pastry chefs.

spjt··on Ask HN: What's a good 3D Printer for sub $1000?
I have a 5 toolhead prusa XL, meets every one of your criteria except for not being $4K.
spjt··on OpenDAW – open-source web-based Digital Audio Workstation
https://opendaw.studio/

That looks to be it although I am on my phone and it doesn't fit on my screen.

It's a neat idea although I don't see anything indicating it supports VST and I'm not sure if it is even possible in a browser app. I'd need that for it to be useful.

My hope would be that being open source would lead to decent information about how to use it. I have Bitwig but there isn't much documentation out there and a lot of it you have to pay extra for.

spjt··on Doom crash after 2.5 years of real-world runtime confirmed on real hardware
Just be glad you knew what the bug was before you started. After 2.5 years... "Shit, I forgot to enable debug logging"
spjt··on Amazon has mostly sat out the AI talent war
I suppose you could argue that Amazon does have one special thing going for it here, idle compute resources in AWS. However that is not the sort of thing that requires "AI talent" to make use of.
spjt··on Tell HN: My advice after I applied to 450 positions before getting hired
My question would be why a senior engineer with 15 years of experience doesn't have an "in" with someone at several companies.
spjt··on Dangerous advice for software engineers
If you need this in the form of advice, it's something you shouldn't be doing.
spjt··on Mark Zuckerberg freezes AI hiring amid bubble fears
Are most people that money hungry? I wouldn't expect someone like Zuckerberg to understand, but if I ever got to more than a couple million dollars, I'm never doing anything else for the sake of making more money again.
spjt··on AnduinOS
The last thing the world needs is another Linux package manager. F-Droid uses apt and it could hardly be considered Debian.

It's an interesting question though, that I haven't thought about. At a minimum I'd say that it should have some sort of coherent goals and philosophy, its own package repository, and should not be replicable from its parent distro with a script to install/remove various packages.

The last one is probably the most critical, if it can do something the base distro can't, then it at least has a reason to exist, whether or not you want to call it a "distro" or not.

spjt··on FDA has approved Yeztugo, a drug that provides protection against HIV infection
Would be nice if I could just directly get paid $28K/year to not have sex.
spjt··on FDA has approved Yeztugo, a drug that provides protection against HIV infection
As a former pharmaceutical chemist, the job market in the US is kind of shit, which is why I write code for a living.
spjt··on AI is killing the web – can anything save it?
What I don't understand is why nobody has actually figured this out. I read a lot of different news sources. I'd have no problem paying a reasonable amount of money to read an article I came across in the Podunk Picayune that looked of interest, but no, I have to sign up for a subscription. So they get nothing.
spjt··on LLM Inevitabilism
> LLMs have hundreds of millions of users. I just can't stress how insane this was. This wasn't built on the back of Facebook or Instagram's distribution like Threads. The internet consumer has never so readily embraced something so fast.

Maybe it's more like Pogs.

spjt··on Bill Atkinson's psychedelic user interface
With things the way they are, it's not hard to be more knowledgeable about a condition than your doctor. Doctors have to know about all the possible conditions people can have, I only have to know about the one I have, so I've spent more time researching it than the doctor.

If you don't know what's wrong with you, then a doctor is absolutely the way to go. But if you already have a diagnosis, you can go spend time researching it, the doctor isn't going to do that.

spjt··on Recovering from AI addiction
As someone with an incredibly "addictive personality", I've always seen it much more simply. I become addicted to things when there's nothing else I'd rather be doing that is incompatible with the addictive behavior. Like if I'm sitting on the couch scrolling on my phone, if there was something else I'd rather do (not something that I'd "ought to" rather be doing but don't actually want to) then I would be doing that instead.
spjt··on Some arguments against a land value tax (2024)
The most obvious argument for me is that I don't even think that developing land as much as possible should be a desired outcome. I'd rather have some billionaire sitting on a huge plot of wilderness than turn it into another shopping center.
spjt··on Zorin OS
There's a big difference between noobs on their own and noobs with a competent relative.

Way back in the day, I set up my grandpa with Slackware and FVWM. Yeah, I had to edit a configuration file to add a program - but that also meant that once I set it up, it would never break.

spjt··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
If you're looking for someone to fill a do-nothing CEO job for $6M/year, I'm available.
spjt··on The jank programming language
Being an expert in type theory or language design is not particularly relevant either. The most relevant expert would be the lowly maintenance developer.
spjt··on Let Kids Be Loud
I wonder how much there is an increased concern about injury, I have three kids and by the time I was their age I had spent more time in the emergency room than all three of them put together. I go to my kids' school from time to time and I don't think I've ever seen a kid in a cast.
spjt··on OpenAI slams court order to save all ChatGPT logs, including deleted chats
It won't be coming for local inference.
spjt··on What makes a good engineer also makes a good engineering organization (2024)
Doesn't explain why the biggest, most profitable tech companies also seem to have the most user-hostile products. I guess maybe the whole "The users and the customers are not the same people" thing...
spjt··on Red Programming Language
Maybe it's just bias based on what I'm familiar with but I don't really like the syntax, or at least I can't understand any of it intuitively. Looking at the few examples I can find, it doesn't appear to be obvious without having to look at and interpret a bunch of surrounding context for clues to what a particular token is, e.g. a function name, a variable, an argument to a function and what function it is an argument to, the type of a variable, a value being assigned to it, etc. I see a lot of lines of code that are just several strings in a row without any sort of punctuation.
spjt··on Stack Overflow is almost dead
I'm not very sympathetic to moderators. Their job is to make some forum contain only what they want to hear from the (unpaid) people providing the content. If that's what you want, start a blog.

In any sort of IRL community, if some person decided they had the authority to prevent people from answering others' questions, unilaterally decide people aren't welcome, etc. everyone would think they had gone insane.

However there is the problem where any unmoderated public forum will eventually contain only scam artists and Nazis. Moderators address the Nazi spam problem, but now you have the moderator problem. It's been a mental side project of mine lately to find ways to solve the moderator problem, which I can't talk too much about as there is money to be made by doing so.

What happens when the forum gets overrun by Nazi spam? We'll install a set of moderators who remove it. But what happens when the moderators start removing useful information? We simply unleash wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the moderators. But aren't the snakes even worse? Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat. Then we're stuck with gorillas! No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.

spjt··on Stack Overflow is almost dead
It will neither be the first or last site destroyed by hamfisted power tripping overmoderation. And they do it in the worst possible way - Leaving the question up, but preventing anyone from answering it. So, the default experience with SO becomes finding your question already asked and unanswered.

Still, it may find its place as a last resort.
