spinlock··on Tabs, spaces and your salary – how is it really?
This is how I feel about it too. Tab users seem to be saying that, with their configuration of vs-code, tabs work fine. I like a format that works fine with cat, sed, grep, and all of the other unix utilities in my githooks.

plus, I can run vim on a terminal on my phone. vs-code isn't there yet.

spinlock··on Tabs, spaces and your salary – how is it really?
but, git-tabs is higher than foundation-spaces.

I don't think a debit card (linked to a bank account) would be considered "paid in advance". If you had a prepaid card, then it would.

you're kidding right?
spinlock··on Ask HN: Women in tech, how do you find non-toxic work environments?
Binary dude here. My example of an awesome culture starts with founders who actually give a shit about people. I was hired and then the company was preemted on a series B. Rather than letting me start and telling me my options were going to be priced higher, the founders reached out with a checklist form the lawyers so they could give me work and get my start date _before_ the deal closed.

Another anecdote would be bring your kids to work day. Everyone went out of the way to make sure the few of us with kids brought them in and that we had a nice event. It's funny, I told the founders my wife was pregnant with twins while I was interviewing. I had kept this a secret from the job I was leaving because I didn't want them to have leverage over me.

We also have women on the leadership team, etc... but I don't really think that's the key (after all, 3 dudes founded the company and they hired women for key positions). I think it all boils down to not being jerks and really caring about the people you work with and the people your product helps (yeah, we've got an actual mission and not the usual silicon valley bs about trying to change the world).

And, our sales team has already hit their numbers ... for the year so we're hiring engineers to try to keep up with the growth. PM me if you're interested in learning more about the team :)

spinlock··on Visualize data instantly with machine learning in Google Sheets
I wonder if it's actually machine learning or if they just implemented a query language that tries to guess what you mean.

The definition of machine learning that I use is: an algorithm which improves its performance through experience.

So, if charts doesn't get better the more you use it, it's not machine learning.

OMG, Google stole your idea. You should sue.
spinlock··on Uber may have to add tipping feature in NYC
FYI - waiters also get _really_ mad if you only tip 10%. That's basically 2% less than minimum wage the way the IRS taxes waiters.
spinlock··on Ask HN: Is your company (job) family friendly?
Marissa Mayer has a nursery next to her office. If she were family friendly, she'd have her kids in the same daycare as the rest of the company.

I personally think it's important to remember how the Internet worked with TBL invented the Web. Most importantly, everyone believed and implemented net neutrality. I think it's a very interesting thought experiment to imagine if we would even have the web had the University of Minnesota decided to drop all http packets to promote their competing gopher protocol.

The Web is the best example I can think of for why we still need net neutrality.

spinlock··on Stanford Professor Loses Political Battle To Simplify Tax Filing Process
Bullshit. The government bond traded for SS and Medicare funds is not sold on the open market. It has got zero to do with the risk free rate of return. The government can default on all SS and Medicare payments without affecting any bond holders.
spinlock··on No, I Don’t Want to Subscribe to Your Newsletter
this is why it's good to require a credit card for a free trial. it will kill the top of your funnel but the bottom will actually get fatter because those who do sign up for the free trial actually want to demo your software.
spinlock··on US Senate votes to undo FCC internet privacy rules
This is what I'm thinking. We can't rely on our government to do the right thing so we need to do it ourselves.

let's replace the electoral college with non-fixed fonts!

The web is not the internet
spinlock··on Onedrive is slow on Linux but fast with a “Windows” user-agent (2016)
You're talking about an era when Gopher was still the dominant protocol on the internet.

If you're writing apps that work in i.e. And not chrome you're not going for a big user base. I.e. Is 2% of our traffic and 50% of my time.

spinlock··on Tamale: An Erlang-Style Pattern-Matching Library for Lua
I'm just starting to get into Lua (thanks HammerSpoon) and I feel like it's a 1.0 or grown up javascript.

You have a syntax that isn't broken and the projects tend to be more interesting (like this one) rather than: I re-implemented a Unix tool that's been around since the 60's and mine is a million times slower!

spinlock··on GitHub lets staff own IP developed for personal projects using company resources
I don't get why he didnt' make up some bullshit and call it his great idea. Tell them he thought up a way to train monkeys to reverse compile FORTRAN.

spinlock··on How Uber Used Secret “Greyball” Tool to Deceive Authorities Worldwide
Do you remember how hard it used to be to hail a cab in SF? There was an entrenched system that was bad for drivers, bad for passengers and great for the 1% that owned the taxi medallions. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I'm sure the system made sense but it had been abused by entrenched interests to enrich themselves. Look at NYC, medallions used to go for $1M+ and are becoming worthless.

If your entire industry crumbles when you face competition, you're not the "good guys."

spinlock··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
I'll believe Trump is brining back coal mining jobs before I believe the he is the victim in this Trump University embarrassment.
spinlock··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
It's great marketing. If you look at the NRA's leadership, they all held marketing positions for gun manufacturers
spinlock··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
1. Trump said the judge was not qualified because of his race not affiliations. This is ex-post-facto reasoning and it's intellectually dishonest.

2. It's also fake news:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2016/06/...

I see comments like yours and want to give up on dialogue. Why should I play into your game?

spinlock··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
> It's 100% standard to dismiss a judge for having a bias.

This is where the dialogue breaks down. It's not normal to dismiss a judge based on ethnicity. It's normal for a judge to recuse themselves if they have a financial interest in the outcome, etc...

Trump's supporters and his detractors have very different ideas of conflicts of interest. I would say making Mar a Lago the "Winter Whitehouse" is an unacceptable conflict because we the people pay Trump rent every time he takes a trip there. I just don't understand how one can defend that sort of self dealing.

spinlock··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
How about stating very publicly that a judge could not be impartial because he's Mexican. That's kinda textbook right there.
spinlock··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
they'd also be wrong because liberals were the ones who finally got Osama bin Laden. Bill Clinton was also accused by Republicans of trying to distract from Monika Lewinski when he ordered an attack on bin Laden _before_ 9-11.

Competent people can do more than one thing at the same time.

spinlock··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
You should tell your mom that there are fewer abortions when women are given access to them. It's counter intuitive but there's data to back it up.

Bill Clinton said it best: abortion should be safe legal and rare.
