for MY2025+ if you're in eco mode it shuts the valve so that's not too bad for me.

I'd say the reliability statement is still a bit early (GRC has been out four years, GR Yaris with same engine has been out about 5-6). But so far it does seem fairly reliable at least up until someone decides to push the power limits for various components.

It's insanely fun. I previously had a BRZ which was also a lot of fun. This is a whole new beast. Especially in not ideal conditions (wet road in the fog on a mountain and presumably in snow or dirt).

Most people getting a GR Corolla aren't getting it only as a point A to point B car. So your point about it basically just being people transportation is mostly moot.

It's also really completely different from a standard Corolla.

Much of the time for a car like this it's more about changing the tone and maybe squeezing a bit more performance out of the car. But along with that there's usually a volume increase. It's a much smaller subset of car owners who change an exhaust just to have an obnoxiously loud one.
spike021··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
Agreed. I switched to an aftermarket catback (sxth single exit, lol) over the past year and while I really enjoyed the difference in tone, the increased volume level was just barely intolerable. So I'm back on the OEM one.

I also own a GR Corolla. it's a fantastic car.

Seeing Wololo posted is a blast from the past.
spike021··on How Kalshi Infects the News
I really got into baseball cards a few years back. It is fun to collect for favorite players and all but once you realize it's a money pit you either are too deep and addicted or you're able to wean yourself back off it.

Fortunately it was the latter for me. I'd love to keep buying the stuff but it's such a waste. Better to buy singles I actually want. It's just not as fun as me being the one who pulled the card.

spike021··on How Kalshi Infects the News
Even something that should be as fun as collecting and trading cards (baseball, pokemon, etc.) revolves around "pull odds" for rare cards. There are people spending thousands of dollars monthly just to rip a desirable card they could flip for money that in most cases would never make up for how much they spent just buying packs and boxes of the product.
spike021··on The Log is the Agent
Why not save progress and important results of a conversation (i.e. including tool calls and such) to a project markdown (even multiple as needed) and clear your context window completely rather than compacting many times? You can then just specify a markdown file to be included as context. Especially if following any kind of plan document and executing on a part of it.
spike021··on Costco is the anti-Amazon
My local locations are busy even during those times. it's a constant battle.
spike021··on Costco is the anti-Amazon
I park in the back any time I go to Costco. the locations nearest to me are always packed to the brim. even the sort of "secret" extra spots that are behind the building and could be considered employee spots.
spike021··on Costco is the anti-Amazon
ample parking? Not at any locations in my area. Even on weekdays.
spike021··on How does a pull-back car work? Illustrated teardown
When I was a kid I needed growth hormone shots. we used regular syringes that fit into this tan plastic "gun" thing. you pulled back the top into a locked position. placed the tip of the gun to the skin where the needle should inject, and pressed the trigger button to release the lock. can't remember if it also pushed the plunger though. this was back in the 90's.
spike021··on Qwen 3.6 27B is the sweet spot for local development
Certainly won't work on my M4 Pro with 24GB lol
spike021··on HackerRank open sourced its ATS. My resume scored 90/100. Oh wait 74. No – 88
there have got to be better ways to optimize pipelines. maybe set a limit on number of applications for a role based on the number you/your team can reliably go through them. if more are needed then open the role for another wave of applications.
spike021··on Not everyone is using AI for everything
If you're not already, try to see if those companies have engineering blogs or open github repos where you can see how they feel about AI beforehand.
spike021··on How to setup a local coding agent on macOS
what are you using on yours? I've got a M4 Pro 24GB also. tried the open source gpt one. it's alright but I found it can get stuck at times. maybe just my config in LM Studio.
spike021··on Ask HN: How do you get into a flow state when using AI to code?
I think planning is a big part. ironically, this wasn't a part of my typical routine as an engineer before AI came around. Sure I thought through the work or ticket I was assigned but not always at as much of a birds eye view.

Nowadays with AI I try to start most tasks with a plan, review each phase/step, research parts I'm more unsure of, and try to refine it. Ironically it's more of a dev cycle like process anyway IMO.

spike021··on Waymo Premier
One time I hopped in an Uber and got a missionary-like lecture on Islam and an invite to go to a mosque.

More typical of Christians so it kind of threw me off.

But anyway, a paid service shouldn't be starting that kind of conversation unless for some reason I started it and even then that'd make it just as uncomfortable for the driver.

spike021··on Apple reveals new AI architecture built around Google Gemini models
not just google maps but google search itself has been on the iphone since it launched
spike021··on Siri AI
we were doing the same thing and giggling a bit that it's basically "AI AI" now. realistically a lot of people thought of Siri as AI already.
spike021··on Anti-social: It's fads, not friends, which now dominate social media feeds
While I partly agree, I also disagree. I still use Instagram a lot to keep in touch with friends I've made in different places. Generally as long as they are making posts then my feeds have those posts. It's only when they do not and supposedly IG "runs out" that I don't.

Personally what I hate more is that there are some content creators I've been happy to support over the years and now instead of doing regular content posts they now do the "collab post" thing as an ad that looks like a regular post. Some of them may do but many do not.

spike021··on Meta confirms 1000s of Instagram accounts were hacked by abusing its AI chatbot
I tried creating an entirely separate account for a meetup group and had the same problem. Nothing I tried worked.
spike021··on GTA 6 Developers Unionize
as a student back in 2012, the CS program i was in was mostly people who wanted to make games. that's just one person's POV but most people i knew at the time weren't really into anything else in software.
spike021··on Can we have the day off?
At my most recent role we were definitely being judged by output metrics (both jira tickets completed and github prs merged). They showed us the jellyfish tool they used to check those metrics. Well, some of it. Regular ICs themselves didn't have that access.
spike021··on Scammers are abusing an internal Microsoft account to send spam links
A while back I had a reservation with a hotel on Booking and I received a phish attempt that came directly via the Booking site domain email and also DMs but "sent" by the hotel. When I looked into it at the time, it seemed less like an issue of hotels specifically having their accounts infiltrated and more like some kind of message/email endpoint on Booking's end was being abused in a similar manner.

I'm not sure this is the same type of issue but found this interesting, especially since apparently it's been reported to MS and no action has been taken.

spike021··on Remove–AI–Watermarks – CLI and library for removing AI watermarks from images
Are markers being removed here the same or similar to ones tools might add if you use an AI tool just to edit a photo? like a more complicated object removal in a photo editor?
spike021··on U.S. DOJ demands Apple and Google unmask over 100k users of car-tinkering app
I had a neighbor with a car they clearly wouldn't fix that desperately needed a smog check. reported them also. they moved away shortly after though, so i'm not sure if CARB ever followed through.
spike021··on Cisco workforce reductions
we were acquired and part of our org moved into cisco HQ.

the entire floor were Indian other than our org, and over time our org was filled out with incoming transfers and new hires.

i'll never forget some irony in that one of the engineering leaders brought us together for a mini townhall once and praised our "diversity" but by then the percentage of people in the room were basically the same as you described, including said leader. even our twice a week catered lunches were almost always indian.

just an interesting experience being part of cisco for a couple of years.
