spazx··on Ask HN: Good and affordable E Ink reader?
The most technical thing I've used it for was a compsci textbook or a manual (either O'Reilly or similar) and it looked pretty alright under Nickel iirc. Depends largely on whether the code is rendered as text or an image.
spazx··on Ask HN: Good and affordable E Ink reader?
My Kobo Aura H2O edition 1 is amazing. E-ink looks good, battery lasts awhile, waterproof, and you can jailbreak it and install custom firmware if you wish. There are alternative reader packages for it that are great, but the base OEM one Nickel is okay for most epub books and supports non-DRM. (Nickel also lets you "dog ear" pages, highlight, and take typed notes. you can refer to all your notes/highlights in a book through an index) It's also the only one I could find that takes a micro SD. Don't go higher than 32GB micro SD or it starts to act weird.
spazx··on Show HN: Dexter, a Voice Controlled Assistant
This looks great so far. I'm gonna play with this soon.

I ask this about every voice assistant project: Is the wakeword changeable, or can I set it to multiple?

spazx··on Regolith Linux – An i3, Gnome, Ubuntu based distribution and desktop
This is really neat! It's really nice to see a desktop environment with i3 ready out-of-the-box on a distro. I also really like the theme - the name, the moon wallpapers, the UI style, etc. This will probably become my go-to for a Ubuntu-based desktop distro.

Looks like a lot of fun to build. Very pretty unit. Love the thermal printer addon. Pre-ordered.

spazx··on Ask HN: Has anyone else just gotten bored of the Internet?
As we are embarking on some beautiful philosophy on this thread, I feel inclined to try to contribute.

It's definitely the homogenization and corporatization, and the ads and paywalls, tracking and privacy issues, etc.

Perhaps this is nostalgia, but, exploring isn't the same as it used to be. I was 8 in 2003 and I remember surfing the wild west web of fan sites for my favorite shows and games. Pokemon probably had the most. A lot of people's sites were really intricate and organized and had a lot of content. I fondly remember a few sites with content created by just their owner.

When people had their own personal websites and didn't worry about copyright strikes and ads, when you didn't have to sign in, people were more creative. A lot of these kids would experiment with different types of art. Those personal fan sites often included art, fan fiction, flash cartoons, and journals. I liked all the different site layouts. Now everything is a cookies message and a hamburger menu.

Later on places like deviantart came and swallowed most of those creative people by the time I was 13 or so, old enough to really contribute something. Deviantart is a great example of a website filled with beautiful art (and even more garbage), connected to dead accounts, that may be purged or broken when sitewide changes occur, and forever forgotten.

Maybe they wouldn't be preserved at all if a personal site went down, but I feel like placing everything within the bounds of an unreadable terms of service, held by an uncaring corporation, on a site with some customization if you feel like paying for it, is a bigger problem depending on who you are. When everyone had their own, it felt more spread out, you didn't have to join one big community to talk to a group or an individual, you just... clicked a mailto link.

Maybe it's a convenience thing, in that case, not every artsy person also wants to be their own webmaster. But alternately, those who do create personal sites or project sites are forced to market themselves as there's less "exploration", people don't "discover" as easy.

Perhaps I'm unusual but, as a kid, I used to put vague terms into Google and surf to the 20th or 30th page and find all the neat stuff I could. My disk was stuffed with gifs and sprites and little games.

Remember back in like '02 when FunnyJunk was the same colors as HN? (iirc)

wfh today, probably shouldn't be writing books like this.

Must be easy to feel that way when you can afford to make that choice. It's something most of us 9-to-5 drones only dream of.

edit: lol wow downvoted? smug much? I never even said I disagreed.

spazx··on Ask HN: What 16-bit Windows applications (except games) are you still using?
I know of a small company run by a retired man, that designed and installed several industrial control systems. All of these are air-gapped and run by very old computers on DOS 3, I think they might be 16-bit. It's run by him and him alone. He travels out to fix them in different cities once in awhile. I asked in passing if he tried moving to VMs, he has but didn't describe it, he said it didn't work out.
spazx··on Why Is Everyone Building an Electric Pickup Truck?
I think that auto manufacturers are desperate to prove that an electric car isn't a little wimpy thing. Tesla proved that it can be a great sporty car and family SUV. Now they all want to win over the demographic of people who want a heavy duty truck, and prove to them that they don't need a heavy noisy stinky diesel to do it.

A lot of that demographic associate that noise, vibration, and smell with power, and think that electric vehicles can't provide that same performance and feeling of handling. A lot of them feel that electric drive will only work efficiently for smaller vehicles, or that electric implies lightweight or small or otherwise not heavy duty.

Of course manufacturers want to prove them wrong, and try to get all demographics interested in electric vehicles. Electric trucks would be great for utility companies.

spazx··on Unix Wars (2000)
"In the late 1990's, interest began to coalesce around Linux, the first really open Unix system released under the free software GNU license, and which might finally unify the Unix family after three decades of development."

I wonder if they ever imagined the editor wars and distro wars of today.

spazx··on GameStop: We Can Stay Open During Lockdowns Because We're 'Essential Retail'
I recently got my first real tech job, and had sizable disposable income for the first time, and the first thing I thought of was ThinkGeek. I used to eye the site all the time as a kid, but never had more than a hundred bucks to spend once or twice a year. My dad got me the neat limited edition ASHPD replica they had for Christmas. I reserved a stand but never got to claim it. I think my ex may have taken the ASHPD when we split, I really hope not. I may have to go look now. I was excited to get something else neat from ThinkGeek, and then I got redirected to gamestop.com and felt about ready to cry. Is it just my nostalgia, or did they have much cooler stuff in like, 2006 than they did in 2018?

spazx··on An immune molecule can sometimes influence the social behavior of mice: study
Yes, but there is a difference between helpful therapies and treatments, and "a cure".
spazx··on An immune molecule can sometimes influence the social behavior of mice: study
Nice goalpost scoot. I'm telling you that if you ask any autistic person, they may express dissatisfaction with their autistic troubles, but they would tell you they would not want to be "cured" or "changed", because they would no longer be themselves.
spazx··on An immune molecule can sometimes influence the social behavior of mice: study
>incapable of empathy or love for its parent

Autistic people are not sociopaths, they are not incapable of empathy or love, they just struggle to understand when you're expressing it, or to express it in appropriate way.

Your fear of being unable to communicate with your child is valid, but autistic people are not "broken".

spazx··on An immune molecule can sometimes influence the social behavior of mice: study
And is that worse than getting polio?
spazx··on An immune molecule can sometimes influence the social behavior of mice: study
It's not so black and white. Most autistic people aren't distinctly "low" or "high" functioning like that. They are otherwise fairly average people with a few traits that make things difficult, and appear "high" or "low" functioning depending on the environment they are subjected to.

Why don't you ask an autistic person if they want to be cured? Go ahead. Jump on r/aspergers and ask them. They will tell you to go fly a kite.

spazx··on An immune molecule can sometimes influence the social behavior of mice: study
Autism is characterized by autistic behavior. You cannot separate autistic behavior from an autistic person, it is simply their nature. These "mouse models" are inaccurate, as they're based on behavioral observations in the mice and likening them to human behavior. We don't really know how autism works and why, and we haven't discovered actual autistic mice. In other words, it's mostly extrapolation.

Anything can "reduce autism symptoms" that can make a neurotypical person unable to behave normally. Autistic behavior IS the normal for autistic people. Heavy sedatives, just like being very sick, can "reduce autism symptoms" since the person would be too tired to exhibit any behaviors at all.

"Look, he's not flapping and pacing! His autism must be cured!" No, you dolt, he's exhausted and miserable from being sick.

Leave autistic people alone and let them be themselves. Seriously, I can't believe some people would rather let their kid die of polio than believe they could be autistic. If you think having an autistic child is that terrible, you probably shouldn't have kids.

With all due respect, what makes you think you're qualified to lead this movement and screen people? What makes you think your value system is the best one? What makes you believe you're most grounded in reality? What ARE your beliefs? I mean these questions not in a disrespectful way, just trying to understand.
