spaznode··on “Our Marketing Is Up Fog Creek” And What We Did About It
I've used fogbugz, can't say I was very impressed with the product. Maybe they need to spend more time on that and the product will market itself. Seriously, this is a great example of the wrong way to view a product.
spaznode··on Announcing Hank: A Fast, Open-Source, Batch-Updatable, Distributed K-V Store
It actually sounds fairly promising. Maybe I read it wrong but didn't like the implication that clients would need to manage and handle connection and routing issues? Maybe that's just part of the fun nosql party.
spaznode··on AT&T has a fiberoptic splitter copying our data to NSA
Yeah, but if most of the world is doing this wouldn't we be losing a vital ability to "protect and insure interests" of country? In the real honest way and not patriot act bs.

Maybe you guys are just clueless about us having real enemies out there or something. No fucking way is FBI or local law enforcement going to be granted anything from NSA for shit. Because it's unlawful.

spaznode··on AT&T has a fiberoptic splitter copying our data to NSA
AT&T isn't the only one to do this. So long as it isn't used against citizens in criminal trials/etc I don't really care all that much if it helps make intelligence people more efficient.
spaznode··on JRuby 1.6.0 Released: Now with Ruby 1.9.2 Support
Once method handles come out in java 7 things should get even more exciting.
spaznode··on Pocket Legends game generates 30 to 50% more revenue on Android than on iOS
This is all just BS marketing by Android(with our w/out fanboys).

Pocket Legends is a lame game on iOS. iOS has much better competition for the same genre as Pocket Legends.

The fact that it's doing so well on Android just logically should be embarrassing for Android but if you spin it right I guess it's easy to make it sound like something it isn't. You know, if you're being dishonest to your fellow man/developer doesn't pull your life karma down I guess.

spaznode··on Android now more profitable than iOS for well-known game developer
Omg "Pocket Legends"?

You know why it's doing better on Android? Because iOS has much better games in the same genre as pocket legends. Maybe this is just a story about how android users are so desperate for games - any games - that this "ok-ish" game on iOS turned out to be a real windfall for them there. Good for them.

On iOS I'd rather play KnightsRush or battleheart (or the new space game, don't remember the name but it makes pocket legends look like the retarded dos era game that it is) any day.

spaznode··on Introducing Overlay Scrollbars in Unity
"One of the contexts we used to validate our solution was scrollable panes rich applications like Eclipse" ..maybe that's only funny to me.
spaznode··on Tuple Spaces (or, Good Ideas Don’t Always Win)
We used JavaSpaces/Jini in an EMRS system during the same period(and also tried GigaSpaces which was best impl) called Frontiers which was at some point used at many hospitals on both coasts.

It did make things very flexible as in we knew we could just start ripping pieces out of the system during testing to make sure every piece was completely autonomous and definitely redundant with data. Also had "agents" in self contained "hot reloadable" classes because we learned about the discarded classloader trick. Man, learned so much fun/crazy stuff at that job.

spaznode··on Tuple Spaces (or, Good Ideas Don’t Always Win)
Biggest issue I had was the idea of communicating data through the actual space which is why message based protocols that handle direct function/method invocation on take are so much easier to deal with and not worry about performance issues.

It sure as shot was fun to play with it in a big enterprise environment for a while though. =)

spaznode··on Dear Google, I Have More Than 10,000 Contacts
Omgwtf? So yeah, wow they finally found someone who hit the 10000 limit solution. Maybe they'll make the 10k browser limit turn into a more dynamic/pageable solution and maybe they won't. Choosing to solve browser issue with 10k at the time was probably the right engineering answer to the problem at hand. The solution is complicated and time consuming and time for engineers costs money.

So yeah, just use another enterprise app instead. You don't really have much choice.

spaznode··on A Deepness In The Sky
It's called adderall, I'm a fan.
spaznode··on A Deepness In The Sky
F- yeah! This (don't forget to read the other book first - a fire upon the deep) is my third favorite sci fi novel series of all time. Right after foundation series and dune collection.

A must read for all hn readers.

spaznode··on I've had more fragmentation problems with iOS/iPhone than with Android
When you say "multiple" and "easy" what exactly is the implication there? Worrying about 5-6 revisions of an API or 30-70 variances of the same problem on multiple pieces of hardware with multiple variances of platform debauchery forced upon you by a given mobile carrier?

It just isn't possible to make the case that this aspect of android doesn't make things harder and still retain any semblance of honesty or credibility.

spaznode··on FCC: We didn't impose stricter net neutrality regulation because Android is open
Thanks, Google. >8/
spaznode··on [dead]
It does need fixing but you guys don't need to go all overboard hiring people and stuff to get it. It's just what the article said. There was a ~perfect~ analysis some graphic designer/something did of newtwitter where they fixed everything with these slight tweaks to font / headers being more easily picked out of sections and everything else. It was just perfect for this, but fucked if I can find it now. Literally just read it from something here or on reddit yesterday but no search is turning it up. You guys could do this yourselves given a good day or so of tweaking shit.

Really tried hard to find that link, it's there somewhere if someone can search better than me. Tell Gabe jesse said so. =)

spaznode··on Google fired engineer for breaking internal privacy policies
This is a really big deal guys, it means nothing at all how comfy we feel knowing google peeps personally. The fact is there is no regulation or oversight dictating how seriously google needs to take our privacy other than random - easily ignored - blips like this. We need government intervention/oversight to make this stuff go away. The gov is already there unofficially anyway, let's not kid ourselves about that. Google gave that little piece away years ago. No us company with that much personal data would be allowed to exist otherwise. I would know, did gigs at bellatlantic long before "it" happened and uncle sam was and always has been there just the same. More about what they're allowed to officially charge you with in court - don't think they couldn't know either way at some level..though probably what they were doing really was in our national best interest. Not judging, just saying..we need offiial public oversight or be left at the mercy of what the corporation decides to do with our data. The same data that provides the overwhelming majority of revenue via advertisers. It's just sick is all.
spaznode··on Google fired engineer for breaking internal privacy policies
Still kind of alarming, I mean I do personally know some google employees and none would even remotely consider doing anything like this for both philosophical and practical reasons. Either way it's kind of scary that some douche fucker "quality assurance" dweeb had enough access to do this kind of thing.

I think we ought to have some kind of equivalent HIPPA act for ALL data personally identifiable to us, not just in medical contexts. That'd put the fire under googles ass enough to take our privacy seriously. Fuck Eric Schmidt and his "change your name at 18" bullshit. We know who that fucker is right now.
