spapas82··on A platform-jumping prince – History of Prince of Persia's 1990s Ports
I don't remember having such a CGA simulator. I suppose it would be a TSR program that I needed to run before prince, but definitely I wasn't doing that.

From some research it seems that hercules was actually supported:

https://www.dosbox-staging.org/getting-started/enhancing-pri...

and from

https://dosdays.co.uk/topics/Games/game_prince.php

> Intel 8088/8086 CPU, 512 KB of RAM (640 KB for MCGA/VGA version) Graphics support for Hercules, CGA, Tandy/PCjr, EGA and MCGA/VGA (320 x 200 max. resolution in 256 colours)

Notice that PoP was one of the few games I was able to play with that hercules monitor :|

spapas82··on A platform-jumping prince – History of Prince of Persia's 1990s Ports
I remember that I was playing the DOS version of PoP on a computer with Hercules Graphics Card (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hercules_Graphics_Card) so I suppose the DOS version also supported Hercules (beyond CGA/EGA/VGA).

The music, even though was playing from the PC beep speaker haunts me to this day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcI8lQvX8Ng

Finally, after all these years I still remember running it with "prince megahit" to enable cheat mode so I'd be able to pass the levels using ctrl+l...

spapas82··on Top Programming Languages 2025
What's really interesting is the place of Elixir (below Cobol and ABAP) and more of less the same as Ada. This is very controversial when comparing it with other indexes where, for example Elixir is the most beloved programming language or the language that most people wanna use. Also compare it with the number of Elixir posts on the front page of hn.

Any idea how could it be explained?

spapas82··on GNU Midnight Commander
In a restricted environment like a console only system these two pane file managers are very useful. I was a heavy user of norton commander (nc) back in my DOS days. Also these are useful on mobile.

However I rarely use them on a graphical environment like windows where I can open arbitrary explorer windows and arrange them as I see like. I guess it depends on what people have experience on...

spapas82··on Scammed out of $130K via fake Google call, spoofed Google email and auth sync
My two cents: 1. When somebody communicates with you and tells you it's urgent it's usually scam. They are trying to make you do stuff because of the urgency and so scam communication will always be urgent. Here in Greece one of the most common scams is to call older people and tell them that "your son has had a car accident and we need 5000 euros right now to operate on him, bring the money in a bag"

2. (More general) When a person initiates a communication with you it is for his benefit, not yours. If it was for your benefit then you'd initiated the communication to benefit from it. This is not only about scam but also about selling stuff or answering to polls or whatever. Be always sceptical when somebody you don't know contacts you.

spapas82··on Robert Redford has died
I even got the protagonists watch (seiko Pepsi)
spapas82··on Show HN: I made a generative online drum machine with ClojureScript
I had also build a similar (non polished) app using js: https://boombox-agw.pages.dev/

It also includes a bunch of greek rhythms; try tsifteteli!

spapas82··on The Helix Text Editor (2024)
+1 for evil helix, however the default keys are not 100% compatible with vim needing some more tweaking with the settings.

For example C is not change line as expected but multi line edit mode (something not very useful with vim keybind) ...

But even with these quirks it's close enough to be usable and enjoy all the goodies of helix.

spapas82··on How many HTTP requests/second can a single machine handle? (2024)
> External volume for the database - it does not write to the local file system (we use DigitalOcean Block Storage)

Is this common? Why not use the local filesystem? Actually, I thought that using anything else beyond the local filesystem for the database is a no-no. Am I missing something?

spapas82··on Leaving Gmail for Mailbox.org
Unfortunately this is common in many smtp servers and is configuration dependent: After you authenticate as usera@example.com you can send emails as userb@example.com.
spapas82··on Leaving Gmail for Mailbox.org
The whole point of PGP is to actually communicate (out of band) with the party you want to sent mail to and receive his public key.

It's no big deal if you really need to send a private message.

spapas82··on Zed for Windows: What's Taking So Long?
For people that use scoop and want to try Zed there's a precompiled binary they can install using scoop install zed.

I tried it and the experience (mainly visually, fonts colours etc) wasn't very good so I can understand why the Zed developers are reluctant to formally release windows binaries.

spapas82··on Left to Right Programming
The proper way to parse or construct nested list comprehensions as explained in pep 202 is to think like you're using normal for:

for a in b:

  for c in a:

    use(a,b,c)

This would be

[use(a,b,c) for a in b for c in a]

Everything stays the same except the "use" part that goes in the front (the rule also includes the filters - if).

spapas82··on How and Why to Ditch GitHub
For a self hosting solution I'd recommend gitea: it's a single go binary that needs almost no installation (only a config file), it's very fast, updates work great (replace previous binary and restart), supports ldap and has all the features of GitHub your love and even various features that free GitHub does provide (ie branch protection for private repos).
spapas82··on I'm Archiving Picocrypt
This was really huge. I actually had to pass it to an LLM to get an abstract ....

I didn't know about picocrypt but I already have two options for safely encrypting files: 7zip with its AES-256 (simple) and veracrypt with various algorithms (more involved but allows you to mount the encrypted vols). Actually these are already mentioned in the tool's readmy, great work: https://github.com/Picocrypt/Picocrypt?tab=readme-ov-file#co...

spapas82··on Show HN: Kitten TTS – 25MB CPU-Only, Open-Source TTS Model
This great for english, but is there something similar for other languages? Could this be trained somehow to support other languages?
spapas82··on Perfume reviews
I also have a favourite sandalwood aftershave (Proraso red) but cannot find this scent in a perfume :(
spapas82··on My favorite use-case for AI is writing logs
This is interesting, I like the way jetbrains is using the local models for auto completion.

Do you know if there's a similar solution for vscode?

spapas82··on Perfume reviews
Yes what i had written is mainly true for designer perfumes not niche. However I'm not very much into the niche fragrances because of sampling difficulty and prices.
spapas82··on Perfume reviews
Have tried a bunch of Montale and mancera. Yes they have some unique perfumes, and some are potent. Unfortunately didn't find anything that it clicked to me.
spapas82··on Perfume reviews
I used to try and buy a lot of perfumes some years ago. Unfortunately I concluded that it isn't really worth it since beyond some classics (Fahrenheit , terre d Hermes, declaration, narcisso for him, dior home, ysl m7, armani code, zv this is him, ck eternity, chanel egoiste platinum and of course aventus) there aren't many truly unique scents. Most perfumes try to copy another existing, mass appealing one.

Also male perfume nowadays is either too weak or too sweet (or too expensive if you go the niche route). So either I'll wear a perfume that will smell for 30 minutes and nobody will notice or I'll bite the bullet and wear a club perfume that will suffocate people (and not even smell good).

spapas82··on Inside the box: Everything I did with an Arduino starter kit
I had also recorded some of my projects with an Arduino starter kit here https://github.com/spapas/arduino-projects
spapas82··on Helix Editor 25.07
Helix is great and includes a lot of stuff out of the box (file pickers, syntax highlighting, linting etc) without any configuration or installing plugins (contrary to vim or neovim).

I would definitely use it but the main disadvantage is that some keybindings work differently than vim. I understand that the keybindings may be better that the vim ones but after years of using vim I expect "x" in normal mode to delete the character under the cursor or "d" to wait for the motion before deleting anything. When this does not happen I get confused and angry. I think this would be a problem with most people that are using vim; it's very difficult to change your habits especially since you can't ever escape from vim because of its ubiquity.

Thankfully, some good people have released evil-helix, a soft fork of Helix which introduces Vim keybindings https://github.com/usagi-flow/evil-helix ; I tried it and it works great so I'll totally recommend it to people that have my problems.

As a final notice, helix (and evil-helix) works great in Windows (cmd). No need to install rust or anything. Get the .exe and you're gtg.

spapas82··on Happy 20th Birthday, Django
I'm a really happy Django user for 15 years and hopefully I'll still use it for at least another 15!

Django has a lot of beloved features but I think one of the most important is it's stability through the years: I actually have production apps that started on Django 1.4 and python 2.6 and now are updated and with with Django 5 and python 3.13.

All this without too much effort on my side or paying companies to support my projects.

So thank you Django people for the hard work!

I'm also very tired of such articles. Each article with the same content and unfortunately more or less the same comments.

Would it be possible for the moderators to penalize such articles so they can't easily gain traction similar to articles about politics?

spapas82··on Starship: The minimal, fast, and customizable prompt for any shell
Well done for supporting windows cmd (through clink) ; most shell tools don't take care about us windows cmd users !
spapas82··on Marble Blast
This would be really great if

A. Was playable on mobile

B. Could use the phone's gyroscope for controlling the ball

spapas82··on uv: An extremely fast Python package and project manager, written in Rust
I don't use uv for my (django) projects because my pip/venv workflow is good enough and had never failed me in 15 years.

However I really like installing uv globally on my Windows systems and then using uvx to run stuff without caring about venvs and putting stuff to path.

spapas82··on Rocknix is an immutable Linux distribution for handheld gaming devices
I have an anbernic rg35xx h - it's a great device; totally recommend it. It plays games up to ps1 with easy, it also works good in most psp games, maybe with a little frameskip on more resource intensive games.

Very good controllers and firm design. Great value for its price!
