spahl··on Jailbreak for ios 4.0 and iphone4 just released
It was not bricked. It was Facetime/MMS that disappeared.
spahl··on Jailbreak for ios 4.0 and iphone4 just released
Damnit! Why did I click on this link... I didn't even need this...

Full restore failed for me. I'm trying this procedure: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=10298203&post...

spahl··on Threaded vs Evented Servers
A lot of existing libraries, web services and other external resources make eventing more difficult since they don't provide an asynchronous way of using them.

In the case of node.js for example a lot of libraries (mysql for example) have to be wrapped or rewritten since it would block the whole event loop.

spahl··on Riak JS Lib, with implementations for Node.js & jQuery
It does much more.

It integrates distributed MapReduce and has a sort of graph api on top of it. You can link objects together and walk the graph.

spahl··on Riak JS Lib, with implementations for Node.js & jQuery
The nice thing is that riak has an http api. If you need security you can add a proxy in front of it to do basic auth, digest, ssl... You name it.
spahl··on OpenBSD 4.7 released
Speaking of hardware, I'm using it on an alix 2d3 (http://www.pcengines.ch/alix.htm) with openbsd. I was impressed because it's more powerful but much cheaper than a soekris.
spahl··on OpenBSD 4.7 released
I use on my router for WAN load balancing (2 outgoing links) because it is so much easier with pf than with iptables.
spahl··on Ask HN: got any food hacks?
Without the cheese, bacon and sauce... But even then, there is way too much sugar in the bread.
spahl··on Ask HN: Best Unix Tricks?
...except, when I want to execute a command once per file. :-)

If I want this I have the choice between: '-exec sed -i s/a/b/g {} \;' in find or '| xargs -IX sed -i s/a/b/g X'

spahl··on Ask HN: Best Unix Tricks?
I love the '-exec' flag for find

spahl··on Writing a DSL with Python
A very interesting DSL for network packet manipulation is Scapy(http://www.secdev.org/projects/scapy/).

It uses python itself as a DSL to make things like packet forging easy:

  >>> Ether()/IP()/TCP()/"GET / HTTP/1.0\r\n\r\n"
  <Ether type=0x800 |IP frag=0 proto=TCP |<TCP |<Raw load='GET / HTTP/1.0\r\n\r\n' |>>>>
Here the / operator was overloaded to stack layers.
spahl··on A Guide to Branching in Mercurial
Another very useful way to manage features that aren't finished are mercurial queues. They can sometimes offer more flexibility than branches.
spahl··on Python Debugging Techniques
The first one with 'import code; code.interact(local=locals())' is priceless.

Is there a way to attach a python shell to a running process? I saw something similar for ruby but could not find a python equivalent.

spahl··on CouchDBKit: A full-featured Python library to access and manage CouchDB
Anybody knows if this one has any advantages over python-couchdb (http://code.google.com/p/couchdb-python/)?
