spaetzleesser··on Microsoft Full Circle
“The current team seems composed by interns without experience on previous Microsoft frameworks, “

That’s my suspicion too. And I believe they did the same thing with Teams and hired some interns who are learning Agile to rapidly deliver “feature”.

spaetzleesser··on Why wasn’t the steam engine invented earlier? Part III
I guess my comment was more about the general build quality of US cars from the 70s. I have worked on some and it seemed they were just thrown together without any thought or care.
spaetzleesser··on Why wasn’t the steam engine invented earlier? Part III
“I had a 89 Corvette...designed in the late 70's early 80's before computers were generally used to do so. It was a mass of shims and slotted holes to get things to line up.”

This has nothing to do with computers. Detroit just didn’t care about building decent cars back then. Mercedes and many others were able to build very nicely designed cars long before CAD/CAM was available.

spaetzleesser··on Alex Jones told to pay $965M damages to Sandy Hook victims' families
We should keep the government out of these things. Instead the parents should have gone to Jones’s house and given him a good beating.
spaetzleesser··on Apple to withhold its latest employee perks from unionized store
410k and health care are fine. I am talking about stuff like legal advice or health hotline. They are promoted as benefit but usually useless once you try to use them.
spaetzleesser··on Apple to withhold its latest employee perks from unionized store
Read the story how he treated a lot of employees when Apple went public. There wasn’t much hippie in him. It took Wozniak to give stock to employees because Jobs refused.
spaetzleesser··on Apple to withhold its latest employee perks from unionized store
Rightfully so. My company provides a whole list of “benefits” nobody ever uses. I much prefer cash.
spaetzleesser··on The doctor who convinced Mark Cuban to sell drugs
First let’s see if prices really will come down for patients.
spaetzleesser··on The doctor who convinced Mark Cuban to sell drugs
I have done nothing to bring down price of subscription drugs. But unlike billionaires I have also not lobbied for socially harmful things like shareholder value over everything else, tax cuts for wealthy people, privatized for maximum profit health care, abandonment of pensions, different tax treatment for income from investment vs labor and many other things.
spaetzleesser··on Starlight interstellar probe
You can separate them. You want to send probes with sensors and get the data back. Just don't send microbes.
spaetzleesser··on Starlight interstellar probe
Why would you waste weight and send organisms? I can't see anything useful coming out of it. And it would be sad if these organism wiped out alien life.

The probes need as many sensors as possible. It will already be super tricky to make any observations from a probe that goes at a tenth of the speed of light. And how do you get your data back from that distance without huge antennas?

spaetzleesser··on The doctor who convinced Mark Cuban to sell drugs
As a general rule it’s pretty safe to assume that a billionaire is a greedy, selfish asshole. Otherwise they wouldn’t have got there. I really wish we would stop praising billionaires and looking at them for wisdom.
spaetzleesser··on Ocean plastics: How much do rich countries contribute by shipping their waste?
No, it would stop working. But you could use the power it generates to burn the waste.
spaetzleesser··on Nobel Prize in Economics Awarded to Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond, Philip Dybvig
It's certainly not Noble Prize level.
spaetzleesser··on Nobel Prize in Economics Awarded to Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond, Philip Dybvig
To me as outsider economics often seems more like an ideology vs reproducible science. As far as Bernanke goes none of his work helped him to recognize a monstrous real estate bubble that was building. And when it popped all he could come up with was to shovel money to the banks and wealthy people. What was his work good for?
spaetzleesser··on Nobel Prize in Economics Awarded to Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond, Philip Dybvig
His works was useless in recognizing the 2008 bubble. He may have written some nice papers but when he was in charge he failed completely. He is simply not a good economist and his work didn't help with making good decisions.
spaetzleesser··on Nobel Prize in Economics Awarded to Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond, Philip Dybvig
Bernanke maybe wrote some nice papers. I remember him being called the "scholar of the Great Depression" but when it was time to use his research and to recognize the 2008 bubble he completely failed. I still remember him proclaiming how everything was just fine while things were already falling apart. And his response was to shovel even more money at the banks and wealthy people while they let regular people lose their houses left and right. And let's see how the current credit bubble that got started by Bernanke will end.

In my view Bernanke was a total failure when it counted. This is almost as bad as giving the Peace Prize to Obama.

spaetzleesser··on Ugliest Airplane Ever Built Predicted the Future
"I love those "eras" when people only half knew what the hell they were doing."

I think we are at this stage in AI, robotics and a lot of medical research. Unfortunately the weird things we are doing in these areas are not very visible.

spaetzleesser··on Banks are not repaying victims of Zelle scams
I had to open an account and wait for two months for my Medallion. Having a credit card was not sufficient.
spaetzleesser··on Banks are not repaying victims of Zelle scams
Is there any reason why they limit the length of passwords or don’t allow certain characters? It makes no sense to me.
spaetzleesser··on Banks are not repaying victims of Zelle scams
It’s a stroke of genius how the banks managed to make the victims of bad security practice at banks responsible for these problems.
spaetzleesser··on Banks are not repaying victims of Zelle scams
It can be a problem when you are out of town and need banking services. My credit union is in CA but after my move to New Mexico I had to open an account at Chase just to get a special signature notarizing that only banks can do.
spaetzleesser··on Banks are not repaying victims of Zelle scams
The same happens in health care. The system is full of traps that a customer/patient can’t reasonably navigate.
spaetzleesser··on Managers with a business degree reduce employees' wages, do not increase profit
At my company they lately talk about hiring “resources”, not “people”. This really bugs me. They really seem to be hellbent taking any humanity out of work.
spaetzleesser··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
I am not sure if this is smart technically but from an environmental perspective I prefer cars to have passive sensors. Blasting out ultrasound and Lidar is pollution that can impact animals.

Personally I think self driving cars will only work once roads are built for them with specific markers and self driving cars communicate with each other.

spaetzleesser··on Staff Engineer Archetypes (2020)
This describes the “enterprise architects” at my company. They read a few white papers, make nice PowerPoints, send the work to some offshoring company. The systems produced either don’t work or have serious problems but in the meantime they have already moved into another project and leave cleaning up the mess to other people.
spaetzleesser··on False memory implantation in adults is easy
I have even implanted false memories into myself. There was an event in my childhood where I told my parents that my sister hadn’t told me something although she had. We discussed this event almost 40 years later and I totally believed that she hadn’t told me. Only later I remembered “oh wait. She actually told me but I lied about”.
spaetzleesser··on I don’t believe in sprints
“ if you're throwing all work over a fence to a distinct QA team, you're doing it wrong.”

That’s how it works in an industry where product bugs can kill people. The devs do their own testing but there are large testing teams that take a deep look at at everything the system does.

spaetzleesser··on I don’t believe in sprints
I love it when something needs to be done to unblock a large group of testers but the dev team says “the sprint is closed. Come back in three weeks and we will consider it”. Truly Agile.
spaetzleesser··on Climate Change Is the Product of How Capitalism “Values” Nature
“ Capitalism just values what people value. ”

Capitalism values what capitalists value.
