spaceprison··on Vtracer: Next-Gen Raster-to-Vector Conversion
I had a similar idea the other day after fighting with inkscape tracing! The problem with auto tracing is lack of content awareness so it's just shapes and colors leading to strange objects that require lots of tinkering.

I'm going to try it: Use segment anything to get object masks, Trace each object separately and combine from there!

spaceprison··on ASK HN: Will LLMs replace the transformation layer when building ETL pipelines?
With today's LLMs I could see them used as a way to speed up the generation of transformer code, but I'm not sure you could trust them to 'just work' as the layer.
spaceprison··on House lawmakers press Apple CEO on reports Jon Stewart canceled for China

spaceprison··on Hacking ADHD: Strategies for the modern developer
Correspondence, keeping records and making appointments are attention destroying activities.

For a few year stretch I worked with a team project manager who wasn't technical at all. She'd setup the meetings that I needed to have, diligently take notes in those meetings and then we'd get together to recap everything figure out dates and all that. Then I'd get back to nerding out but with a ordered punch list that I knew Donna needed me to get done. It was the best.

But the pmo wanted to do things a different way so their engagement model moved from embedded PMs focused on team deliverables to individual project focus. Now instead of Donna there to assist with correspondence, keep records, make appointments, and carry out similar tasks I had an army of fragmented Donnas each focused on their one thing and each needing oversight to understand my involvement and external dependencies. The move probably gave the pmo a more modern feel and better reporting but it killed productivity for ADDs like me since a large portion of my time each day became correspondence, keeping records and making appointments instead of cranking out nerd units.

spaceprison··on Everything wrong with tech in 2023 (in no particular order)
Once things go from product focused to profit focused, the ranks start getting filled with administrative roles. Then it's just a matter of time until the balance tips and the iron law of bureaucracy goes into full effect.

https://www.jerrypournelle.com/reports/jerryp/iron.html

"tech" is just the most recent place this has happened but you can see it repeated through out the last century+ of industrialized corporations.

spaceprison··on Playing nice hasn't worked
Her book may try to make that point, but the point of article is seems to be more meta than that.

There are people, like this author, the journalists that interviewed her and the venues who booked her, that believe the open public discussion of ideas is of value to society.

What the author experienced was that discourse featuring opposing positions of ideologically popular topics seem to be subject to silencing/censorship.

By spiking articles, canceling forums and shelving interviews this author believes that something of value is being taken away from society.

spaceprison··on Amazon tells managers they can now fire employees who won't come into the office
Well the last sentence of their newer LP 'Strive to be Earth’s Best Employer' says:

Leaders have a vision for and commitment to their employees’ personal success, whether that be at Amazon or elsewhere.

I didn't expect them to lean in on the elsewhere.

spaceprison··on I think I kind of hate lazy loading
So: developers can't change the way society has chosen to prioritize infrastructure, Poor user experience is the result of this societal failure, thus there is nothing that can be done to improve user experience?

It seems more likely that the expectation that users must have consistent connectivity to load (and keep loaded) the most fundamental aspects of a website (images and text) is a poor assumption and the hubris to leave this type of assumption unchecked the actual root problem.

spaceprison··on Google, Meta, Amazon hiring low-paid H1B workers after US layoffs
If the contract is this simple then is it surprising that existing control givers (aka permanent residents) may have a sense that as long as they're still 'giving' they should still be 'getting' or at least have a place in line to 'get' ahead of a prospective 'giver' (h1b).
spaceprison··on The IPv6 mess (2002)
My impression with France was Reme Despres and Orange did a lot to make transition and adoption happen.
spaceprison··on What Is Happening with ChatGPT?

I too had a dismal showing, but it didn't go religious on me.

spaceprison··on Why project-based learning fails (2018)
I'm on both sides of this. Project based learning is great in that the student gets exposure to 'things' and has to figure out how to wire it all together. The down side is depth of exposure and the ability gain 'real' understanding is typically lacking.

A friend of my wife's husband is a boot camp grad, he can whip out a buzzword compliant web app, but is missing some foundational understanding of what's really happening under the covers. When his aws account started racking up charges like crazy, helping the poor guy debug what he'd built meant working back from his project based understanding of what he'd built meant filling in a lot of blanks for him so he could connect the dots.

spaceprison··on Mid-1990s Sega document leak shows how it lost the second console war to Sony
From what I recall the marketing for the saturn tried to make the knights game 'the new sonic' and it looked dumb.

I also remember wanting to know what a 'panzer dragoon' was but a lot of the commercials made it seem like you should already be aware and they may have just misspelled dragon.

Virtua fighter was a fine game in the arcade but none of my friends were going to buy a saturn for one game they could play at the arcade or some weird flying sonic game.

When playstation came out, battle arena toshinden felt fast and the characters looked cooler. Ridge Racer felt Way faster than Daytona the music was great and the textures blew my mind.

So even though saturn had a earlier launch the Playstation came to the party with more to offer.

spaceprison··on No, GPT4 Can’t Ace MIT
I just had the same experience. It was so strange.

A sentiment analysis plot of all the sources could be insightful both for users as well as a way to tune the weight of sources in the future. Very cool
spaceprison··on Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong
Of course 'phonics only' wouldn't work, but this 'guess your way to reading' type of instruction was used with two of my three kids and I can tell you it was a joke.

It wasn't until we actively intervened and started teaching phonics at home with our middle son and moving our daughter to a private school that taught phonics as a core function of their reading curriculum did they start to actually read.

I haven't listened to the podcast so I can't speak to it's content but I'm interested to hear if what their talking about matches my experience.

spaceprison··on 'Algebra for none' fails in San Francisco
I had the exact same thought by the end of the article.
spaceprison··on This account can no longer post all Tsunami Warnings, Advisories, Watches
Agreed, As a government agency how would you have any confidence that Twitter won't shadow ban your account?

These social media companies aren't Public services, nor have they been deemed critical enough to be required to provide the same facilities as traditionally regulated communication channels.

spaceprison··on Most data work seems fundamentally worthless
The teams that brought value to the company were embedded alongside of the folks producing the data to be 'scienced' and had leadership that was able to understand and communicate the information (and its limits) to their leaders and adjacent teams and use their experience to point the data science folks in the right direction.
spaceprison··on T-code – A protocol for implementing UART serial communications to an adult toy
Many years ago I read and shared the definition of teledildonics http://catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/T/teledildonics.html

From that day on any time someone built a new computer someone in my cohort would ask if the new machine came with a 5 1/4 in. F*ckdrive.

We live in the future.

spaceprison··on Life with Bell’s Palsy (2017)
Man, I had Bell's palsy in 8th grade. It lasted for about two months. Middle school is no place to be a fat kid, but it turns out it's really not the place to be the fat kid with a drooping mouth and an eye patch. I got about 95% of my face back, I'm 40 and if you watch me smile or blink there's a noticeable delay between the left and right sides of my face.

My cousin has had it twice as an adult, the second time left her at about 60%, which has been pretty hard on her.

The fact that people judge appearances first, because it is unpreventable and incurable I'd give it 1 out of 10 stars.

spaceprison··on “Women are wonderful” effect
'The authors supposed that the positive general evaluation of women might derive from the association between women and nurturing characteristics. This bias has been cited as an example of benevolent sexism.'

How is that any less "problematic" than inverting the above to say that ' men are uncaring or mean'?

Casting all men as uncaring can't possibly be viewed as a good thing.

spaceprison··on Ask HN: What are examples of companies dying due to many people quitting?

This is so great. I was just telling my son about the wonder of the old internet and how great stumbleupon was. Thanks for this.
spaceprison··on Sun Microsystem's concept of their future OS GUI

spaceprison··on We've known how to prevent a school shooting for more than 20 years
Agreed, I feel like the issue is societal first.
spaceprison··on VC Meltdown
Don't sweat it. This pain will be at the top and by the more senior folks. I got into the business in 02 at a startup. Moral was low, lots of folks had seen their options become worthless and extreme growth had stopped. Once the frat party was over, just as the post said, the company had to learn how to live off the land. So while it wasn't easy doing more with less, working with smart people that were forced to be ingenuitive was invaluable. The other positive with starting out in a rough patch is you'll get to learn what to be skeptical of during those quartly earnings calls (there are only so many times EBITDA adjusted ARPU can be said before you start to wonder why there's little talk about profit)

I guess what I'm saying is, you're going to be OK, the bits still need to flow, servers will still need to scale and software won't write itself.

spaceprison··on Teleforking a Process onto a Different Computer
Open mosix was the coolest project.
spaceprison··on List of Worker-Owned Tech Cooperatives Worldwide
With many businesses using contract labor instead of full time workers, creating a worker co-op that operates as a contracting firm could be like a shadow union.
