Came up with the epiphany that I like the idea of coding more than actually doing it. So instead I read about people’s exploits in the coding world.

spaceisballer··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
It’s funny that Tech is the source of and solution to all of our problems. But my real critique is that all portable devices these days are around $1000 dollars. I’m sure this display makes the device expensive, why can’t we just have a more humane workflow in our current devices instead of buying a new device?
spaceisballer··on Not an iPad Pro Review: Why iPadOS Still Doesn't Get the Basics Right
I’d have to agree. I see the use case for wanting to share with your small child. It sure seems to me like buying the cheapest iPad is the solution most people go for. Like the gateway drug before a parent feels the kid can handle a phone.
spaceisballer··on Mindfulness interventions for teens decrease mindfulness, study finds
We have the data to show that mindfulness works, however I think we underestimate the pull or grasp that social media has. It’s hard to implement mindfulness when everything is vying for your attention.
spaceisballer··on What is a pig butchering scam? (2023)
Honestly that makes sense, the main reason the public doesn’t hear about these things is because victims don’t want to speak on this. They just got swindled, can you really blame them?
spaceisballer··on The greenest car in America isn't an EV
I think the real oversight is not mentioning that the whole supply chain to provide the fossil fuel used to power the ICE or Hubrid. Its petroleum and fossil fuels all the way down. Even if those BEVs use fossil fuels to charge, there is no way that impact is as large as all the fossil fuels used in the delivering of fossil fuels to fill up your car with a gas tank (or the oil you regularly change).
spaceisballer··on Ethernet: The Basics
I only want mobile items on WiFi. Anything that stays in one place I have wired up. Running my own Cat6 cables throughout my house, very easy to make your own cables. Also means my mesh router has a wired connection to the first router.
spaceisballer··on Apple backs national right-to-repair bill, offering parts, manuals, and tools
I think at this point it makes sense. I imagine most consumers aren’t interested in repairing themselves, but aren’t super interested in going to some random local repair shop. At this point they have their consumers hooked on visiting the Apple Store. Not really a net loss for them, plus it gives off the appearance of being consumer friendly.
spaceisballer··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
It’s $18.99 a month for an individual, I agree with your sentiment but really don’t feel like it’s that inexpensive. Then again I don’t consume large amounts of YouTube as most people seem to do.
spaceisballer··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
I’m a novice, and figured it out and have zero maintenance. Unless you count occasionally updating pihole every now and then. I have a word file with all my exceptions (mostly white lists for Microsoft gaming stuff my kids want) in the event I ever need to reload (ever since I switched to a better SD never have had corruption issues). I understand the spouse issue, mine loves clicking ads on her phone. Easiest workaround is to pop off WiFi click link then go back to WiFi.
spaceisballer··on Nintendo is trying to patent some broad Tears of the Kingdom mechanics
Jumping on the train. Companions in general are very annoying, and having four is next level annoying. I’ve run into the same issues, makes the game not fun when you go to pick items up and initiate their power. Especially when their powers have a tendency to kill the frame rate. I know you can dismiss them but since some parts of the gameplay center on their mechanics it’s very annoying. I could do without companions in an open world game.
spaceisballer··on Verizon and AT&T are charging a new fee to customers on older unlimited plans
ATT has been doing shit like this for years. Making old plans that were a good deal obsolete. Their streaming service was a whole bunch of nonsense that just kept going up in price. I’m sure all mobile carriers have shitty practices but I dropped ATT for T-Mobile, time will tell if they turn out the same way. I do appreciate just paying a flat rate every month.
spaceisballer··on Ask HN: What'd you do while HN was down?
Kudos to you on doing it. I’ve played guitar for twenty plus years and never had the guts to record myself.
spaceisballer··on Ask HN: Should I test my garden for lead?
If you do regular gardening you should just do a test anyway. University of Delaware has a kit I do every other year and gives plenty of data plus a plan (in my case for helping with my grass, but there are options for gardens).
spaceisballer··on Apple Reports Second Quarter Results
Having an older iPad Pro has prevented me from buying a laptop. It’s just so easy to crack it open (with Brydge keyboard) and do whatever I need. Anything to prevent me from having to sit in front of my actual PC is good for me.
spaceisballer··on Apple Reports Second Quarter Results
I’m not surprised that the iPad has a decline. My son has a few year old 9.7” iPad and it works great still. Consume media very easily and even have games. I can notice the difference between it and my 2018 iPad Pro but I could see people are just not going buy new ones every year or two. I’d like the M1 iPad Pro but it’s not worth the jump in price.
spaceisballer··on Apple’s Self Service Repair now available
Yeah when did same day service become terrible? Everyone these days wants the world instead of a minor inconvenience. And is mad if they have any inconvenience. My Nintendo Joy Cons started having drift and between shipping them and getting them back it’s just about a week. Not bad by my standards. But seeing people commenting online it’s like Nintendo is asking for their first and second born child waiting that long.
spaceisballer··on The average Internet user is still strongly against crypto
Not really a polarizing stance the OP was taking. I totally understand that people don’t trust it, just look at all the crazy hype and the endless scam coins. I mean I have a coin base wallet that had at least three different scam coins randomly sent to it, or I really have 900k just sitting there for me to claim lol. I know a little and it’s hard for me to be optimistic to most crypto panning out to anything other than some thing people just buy and sell and continue to tell you “just wait, it’s the next big thing”. It’s just the next techno grift and it’s taking a huge toll on the environment.
spaceisballer··on Kraken CEO on Crime in SF
Is his name spelled wrong?

This reads like someone who lives on social media. There are a lot of stories being shared that major cities are basically burning. Unfortunate if some of their employees got hurt. Instead of any type of compassion or acknowledgement just went after the DA.

spaceisballer··on I hate what video games have become
I get the sentiment that is being expressed but there are just so many games out there I don’t get the complaint. I play zero games that have loot boxes or pay 2 win functionality. I guess the AAA titles get a lot of press but I’m overwhelmed by how many good games that are out there. I think the complaint may be mostly relegated to online multiplayer games, something that in my age I care very little about. Online Co-op games on the other hand or single player games are my jam.
spaceisballer··on Apple Is Working on a Hardware Subscription Service for iPhones
I see it the same way. And if it’s cheaper I would be completely ok with it. I don’t necessarily upgrade every year but I’m still paying monthly. However with the modest feature upgrade year after year it’s becoming harder to justify.
spaceisballer··on Microsoft accidentally reveals that it is testing ads in Windows Explorer
I personally appreciate the insight. I don’t have a desire to purchase Windows ever in the future. I’m waiting on my turn to buy a Steam Deck and want to see how well that does for gaming, which is really the last barrier for me going to Linux. I’m more akin to a regular computer user outside of work. Browsing, playing games and occasionally editing pictures or documents. All which can be done easily (and usually for free) on Linux.
spaceisballer··on Six months in, El Salvador’s Bitcoin gamble is crumbling
I mean that’s the beauty of crypto, the future is so bright. Why is the outlook so good? I’ll be honest I see no good evidence that it will be a viable currency, it’s slow and power hungry and not to mention confusing. We have no shortage of hype and people relentlessly defending it though.
spaceisballer··on NYT shutting down the Wordle archive
I for one am outraged, what are we mad at now? Honestly I don’t mind NYT, I ended up getting a sub to their Games and it’s fun enough and better for my sanity then doom scrolling. Also I cancelled auto renew immediately, easy peasy.
spaceisballer··on Sid Meier warns the games industry about monetisation
Is it really a game changer? I don’t see the problem it’s fixing or the benefit from using them. Just because a developer technically could change something means some solution to prevent change should be implemented?
spaceisballer··on Cyberpunk 2077 Update 1.5
Personally I’m not excited for huge title releases anymore. Plenty of early access games that I’m down for. Recently picked up Project Zomboid for $20. It needs some work on the performance side, but playing a zombie survival game with friends is very fun. We haven’t even bothered doing any modding or other changes.
spaceisballer··on U.S. Secret Service Launches Cryptocurrency Awareness Hub
So all the things you have listed consuming energy have uses. They are doing something. Can they be more efficient, sure. What exactly is crypto doing? What is it solving? The crypto industry keeps growing and consuming video cards, processors and energy. To do what? So if it’s a currency it’s not even close to the efficiency and speed of the current financial system. Ease of use too, not even close. People are making money though, so I guess we don’t question it?
spaceisballer··on U.S. Secret Service Launches Cryptocurrency Awareness Hub
I for one am surprised by the negative sentiment only because the tech industry seems to be all about it. I don’t see the problem it is trying to fix. Crypto by is terrible as a currency, transactions are slow and damn can they cost a lot. And the currency itself fluctuates a lot. It’s not really decentralized, it’s not really anonymous and it can be manipulated. There seems to be no end to people hyping crypto and NFTs, because if I get you to buy in my money may go up. But what exactly am I buying? Sounds like you just need a sucker and I may or may not make money, but since you made up this currency and a small number of people own the lion’s share I guess you all get rich. My take is that the tech industry has just created a new way to become even richer by making some confusing product to prey off everyone. Maybe that wasn’t the initial plan but it sure looks like that’s how it’s shaking out.
spaceisballer··on Dad takes down town's internet by mistake to get his kids offline
Basically the exact same thing in my household. But for their iPads I do have screen time to be off over night after I happened to find out if my kids woke up early (like 3/4am) they would just go hop on a device. I used to have all kinds of time limits but then I was having to always adjust for exceptions.
spaceisballer··on Cryptocurrency is akin to ‘Ponzi scheme’
For people who minted the new crypto it is. They sell something worth nothing and can pump and dump.
spaceisballer··on Cryptocurrency is akin to ‘Ponzi scheme’
It’s more of a greater fool scheme or basically a MLM. You need people to buy in to raise the value, then get all these people hyping it etc etc. NFTs seem to have perfected what crypto started, give you FOMO and make you buy overvalued 0s and 1s.

I think crypto is deplorable purely on the amount of electricity it consumes. It’s pretty clear it offers a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist, unless that problem all along was give a subset of tech people a way to get rich off fools.
