space_rock··on FTX Future Fund
Their growth was reasonably organic if you were following the popularity of exchanges
space_rock··on Bitconnect founder indicted in global $2.4B cryptocurrency scheme
By interesting I assume you mean a scam since I've never seen anything technically interesting from a token sale
space_rock··on Bitconnect founder indicted in global $2.4B cryptocurrency scheme
But here the VCs are the criminals and the predators not the victim of the scam. VCs are more sophisticated to avoid being the victim
space_rock··on '50% of transactions were fraudulent' when Steam accepted Bitcoin for payments
Yes fraud is possible with credit cards. You correctly left out Bitcoin. As fraudulent payments are not possible with Bitcoin
space_rock··on '50% of transactions were fraudulent' when Steam accepted Bitcoin for payments
This article is incoherent. Say what you like about Bitcoin but fraudulent payments are not possible. And yes Gabe is right that people in crypto are criminals running scam projects
space_rock··on Bitconnect founder indicted in global $2.4B cryptocurrency scheme
Yep. It comes down to information asymmetry. Harder to trick and scam accredited investors

Most token sales make good money with very low effort scams

space_rock··on Bitconnect founder indicted in global $2.4B cryptocurrency scheme
Is there a cryptocurrency token sale that's not designed to defraud the buyers?
space_rock··on Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System [pdf]
Not going to work. True blockchains have their coins pre distributed to VC at a discount. This open money system can't work without insiders
space_rock··on Justin Trudeau’s crackdown on protests could make things worse
Freezing bank accounts is an ugly overreach. Going to give sympathy to the protesters
space_rock··on Show HN: StealthDrop – Anonymous crypto airdrops using zero-knowledge proofs
Yep. The pseudoscience tech is the sales pitch and the token sales is the motivation for all "crypto" digit tokens
space_rock··on Kimchi: The latest update to Mina’s proof system
Most people don't understand this stuff so they'll take it at face value even though it's likely a scam
space_rock··on Ask HN: Is there any software capable of testing your spoken English?
Google translate I've used myself to test my pronunciation when learning a language. Seems to be a good test. Native speakers pass and poor pronunciation fails.
space_rock··on A UX designer walks into a Tesla Bar
Reading the author tweet he comes across as silly. Not surprised at the negative reactions. I don't like the Tesla update but a Tesla UI is a huge improvement over other vehicles

New UI is not good compared to the old one. But I'd take a Tesla UI any day of a maze of buttons

space_rock··on A UX designer walks into a Tesla Bar
100% I have this problem every time and looks like the new UI will be worse. They could detect the driver from the weight
space_rock··on Ask HN: At a peak of my dev career, I hate my life
Travel. People think traveling is escapist and not helpful. This I don't believe. Yes you'll drag all your problems with you but now you have no excuses and you'll have to fix them. But you'll have a fresh perspective on everything and a broader perspective on life. You'll understand yourself and the now bigger world better
space_rock··on Kosovo pulls plug on energy-guzzling Bitcoin miners
Why? It's a waste of money and not economically efficient
space_rock··on Kosovo pulls plug on energy-guzzling Bitcoin miners
I think you replied to the wrong comment. Mind was about a poor country wasting govt money on populist subsidies

It's possible to use coal for power without subsidies (coal is cheap) and bonus it's even more economically efficient

space_rock··on Kosovo pulls plug on energy-guzzling Bitcoin miners
Fantastic news would be getting rid of the coal subsidy not this meaningless theater
space_rock··on Kosovo pulls plug on energy-guzzling Bitcoin miners
Both subsidizing dirty coal and using it to mine bitcoin both sound criminal to me. Subsidizing coal is the most evil while mining bitcoin with it is a meaningless act that's fun to dislike
space_rock··on Crypto: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
They need a working theory for how this PoS will work first. Wishful thinking and handwaving does not equal theory. PoW is the only tech that has solved the problem so far. Many things were tried before bitcoin with no results
space_rock··on Crypto: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Ethereum uses pow. Their pos mechanism doesn't work and is a perpetual coming soon promise
space_rock··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
Yes. How dare you be a victim of a crime
space_rock··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
Why? Is there evidence that were in on the criminal conspiracy? All I've heard it they were victims of it
space_rock··on Ask HN: Any serious research on new crypto currency?
Then who's the market? If you are not in the business of selling tokens to suckers or gamblers then you don't have a business
space_rock··on Ask HN: Any serious research on new crypto currency?
An idea that's been done many times already. Turns out 99% of these projects are scams used to sell tokens to suckers. If you're not in bed with the scammers you are the mark
space_rock··on Why is my Rust build so slow?
Someone has never used Rust
space_rock··on iPhone camera app replaces person’s head with a leaf in photo
So now we can't trust our photos to be fake? Let's get rid of the ML. Optional post processing only. This is why an iPhone photo won't be able to be used in court
space_rock··on The Economist tracks excess deaths
One perspective to consider is the length of these restrictions. Other countries have had years of lockdowns and restrictions. New Zealanders were going to concerts while the world was in lockdown. Even if New Zealand's restrictions have been strict the restrictions have been intermittent and only in some regions
space_rock··on The Economist tracks excess deaths
Actually the domestic restrictions on people in NZ have been much less than other countries. They got negative press for proactive restrictions on an exponentially spreading virus. Lockdown after 1 detection
space_rock··on The Economist tracks excess deaths
Well it resulted in one of the lowest restrictions on people in any country besides international travel. Giving people freedom to meet people and work is good
