southphillyman··on Small towns in much of the country are dependent on punitive fines and fees
Yea this was the "elephant in the room" as I read this article. Even if the budgetary requirements necessitate that you pull a ton of people over regardless of race, I imagine the instances where probable cause requires you to pull an individual out of the car for a search are heavily biased.
southphillyman··on The Surprising Number of Programmers Who Can’t Program
That's why I think practicing "leetcoding" is totally worth it. A significant amount of senior applicants fail easy codingbat level questions. Being proficient at easy level algorithm questions will usually push you to the front of candidates at non FAANGs. I've had interview panels tell me I was the first person who could solve basic palindrome and "best time to buy/sell stock" type questions.
southphillyman··on The war inside Palantir: Data-mining firm ties to ICE under attack by employees
It's also a way to flex. Same way people tend to wear alumni sweaters from Ivy League, Stanford level schools. I doubt you'd see anyone wearing an Infosys (or similarly viewed company) shirt in that kind of environment.
southphillyman··on Rising rural BMI is the main driver of the global obesity epidemic in adults
Basically. "Abs get created in the kitchen not in the gym" I wasted dozens of hours of my life trying to jog off a horrible diet.

I have heard some anecdotes of professional athletes who have horrible diets. I believe Chad Johnson survived off of multiple Mcdonald meals a day during his career. Those are unique cases of individuals having the required genetics and being able to spend hours a day with elite trainers

southphillyman··on Google Employee Writes Memo About ‘The Burden of Being Black at Google’
>my teammates always had something to say about everything. But when it came to the violent policing of black bodies, they were silent

Debate is probably the wrong term, seems he was just looking for an acknowledgement of the problem. After one of those police shooting incidents I came into work and all of my coworkers, all white and asian, were talking about how bad the incident was. People at work come together and talk about major traumatic news stories all the time. A consistent absence of that when it relates to a specific topic might seem....strange.

southphillyman··on Google Employee Writes Memo About ‘The Burden of Being Black at Google’
Google is only 2.5% black according to a quick search (and 3.5% Latino). That's all employees, not just developers. I'm not sure how that's even possible for a company of that size in America. AA may be underrepresented in tech overall but they certainly aren't in business, HR, legal, etc in my corporate experience so that number seems very low to me. I wonder if any analysis has been to done to determine if any biases or recruitment strageties resulted in those low numbers.

To Google's credit they are developing various pipelines to recruit underrepresented communities.

southphillyman··on Anyone else thinks that Whiteboard interview is just covered ageism?
Yesterday I read that Google actually decreases their expectations in the white boarding exercises for experienced hires because they realize the leetcoding techniques will not be as fresh in an experienced dev's mind. The expectations are higher in regards to system design and resume questions. That seems to be fair imo.

Later in the material it said that they reject over 80% of people who make it onsite. The bar at FAANGs is just relatively high regardless what kind of role you are trying to get. My mentality is preparing for high bar whiteboard interviews best case lands a job at a FAANG and worst case makes it incredibly easier to land a job elsewhere at a company that doesn't rely on whiteboarding or has a lower bar in general. That's to say investing in whiteboard practice has little downside and has an acceptable time/reward ratio given the results if you are even just ok at it. In terms of ageism whiteboarding is not required to filter older devs out. Resumes viewing can do that. Why would they waste 6+ hours of their expensive Sr. devs time to put someone through a pointless exercise? Serious candidates will commit the same 1-3 months of study whether they are 23 or 43.

southphillyman··on What It Takes to Hire 10 Employees in San Francisco
I never got contacted by FAANGs until I got on Linkedin and made my account public. Seems like it has value in exposing people to big companies that otherwise might not have you in their network.
southphillyman··on The Enduring Mystery of ‘Jawn,’ Philadelphia’s All-Purpose Noun (2016)
The Philadelphia version of "joan" in the 80s/90s was "bust"....now it's "bid". Philadelphians no longer "bust on people" they "bid on people". It's really interesting how these things evolve. DC kids probably have an new entirely unrelated word that essentially means joan now
southphillyman··on The Enduring Mystery of ‘Jawn,’ Philadelphia’s All-Purpose Noun (2016)
Another nuance of jawn is that it could mean anything....except when it involved gender.

Jawn when referring to a human specifically referred to a woman. "That jawn bad" means a woman is attractive. Currently the younger crowd has a phrase "That's a bad jawn" that means something unfortunate happened. Context is very important when jawn is used

southphillyman··on The Enduring Mystery of ‘Jawn,’ Philadelphia’s All-Purpose Noun (2016)
Don't think this is even remotely true. Native Philadelphians, of all races, have been using jawn pretty heavily since at least the early/mid 90s. I'd be interested in which working class neighborhoods you lived in, nolibs/fishtown kind of suggests you may have been surrounded by a lot of other transplants. edit: There is a generational aspect to it as my parents and grandparents never said it. 80s/90s babies for sure. Maybe the people you encountered were relatively young (or old)
southphillyman··on A Programmer’s Regret: Neglecting Math at University
I sometimes wish I had a better foundation in college level math when encountering proofs in algorithm books. This is probably the biggest hurdle to me just buckling down and studying the various complex algorithms.
southphillyman··on Chinese Cash Is Suddenly Toxic in Silicon Valley, Following U.S. Pressure

southphillyman··on YouTube to Remove Thousands of Videos Pushing Extreme Views
There are detectives in my city that make $150k+ It's not unusual for police to double their base salary though overtime
southphillyman··on $500k a Year yet Struggling? Let's Do a Double Take
I know multiple au pairs living in the tri state area (mostly NYC). They seem to love the arrangement and send a ton of money back home, earn college degrees here, etc. Honestly outside of the fact they need to acquire a visa I'm not sure how this is different from having a nanny (au pair make similar pay this isn't a means to rip someone off from what I know)
southphillyman··on $500k a Year yet Struggling? Let's Do a Double Take
Anyone living in a high COL city with multiple kids should look into importing an au pair. $2k a month would really help the au pair and her family back home and save the family potentially hundreds of dollars a month
southphillyman··on Ask HN: How to deal with a senior colleague who acts like he's boss?
I was in a situation like this. Me and another junior developer had to work under a senior developer who repeatedly had to ask us for guidance, took all the credit for everything we did, and called us morons if we couldn't answer questions that he himself couldn't answer.

The other jr developer actually had a nervous breakdown due to the bullying and had to go on medical leave and the sr. developer eventually quit before he got exposed and went to another company doing the same thing (I know ppl there)

My advice in these situations is to stand up for yourself, DOCUMENT what you are doing and even any back and forth between you two (emails). If it's really bad maybe even set him up to fail by not bailing him out constantly. I was able to get the guy under control by threatening to not hold his hand on certain tasks that he had to complete under deadline, unless he changed his attitude

southphillyman··on Buca di Beppo, America’s Most Postmodern Red Sauce Chain
There is a movie called Waiting, that does a great job of illustrating that era and those type of restaurants.
southphillyman··on Ex-Mozilla CTO: I was grilled for three hours at US airport by border cops
I'll never forget how I was strip searched coming back from Costa Rica. They went through every photo in my digital camera, ripped open all of my packaged food items, made little snide remarks to me, and ultimately made me miss my connecting flight. The whole time I was fully cooperative.

Only explanation I have for the level of examination is maybe because I was a young minority returning from a random latin american country solo(?)

southphillyman··on The Plight of the Graying Tech Worker
Doesn't this assume that the interviews even get to the offer stage? How does paying more remedy 80% of your applicants failing fizzbuzz on the phone interview? If you don't have the name recognition of the FAANG you're probably getting subpar applicants regardless.
southphillyman··on College admissions scandal fallout: Stanford students sue UCLA, USC and Yale
Relevance? I just said test scores aren't the only measure. By your own argument Harvard should be majority (entirely?) asian students yet some how it's majority white. There are other considerations, as there should be. A fair approach is a subjective evaluation with a goal of keeping the student body relatively diverse as the country;s demographics.
southphillyman··on College admissions scandal fallout: Stanford students sue UCLA, USC and Yale
>When affirmative action programs start accepting scores that are much lower than for other races, it begins to really call into question your argument.

Might want to call into question your own argument since college admissions aren't based on a simple ranking of the highest scores. Wonder why diveristy programs get questioned but not legacy or athletic admissions.

southphillyman··on The Tragedy of Baltimore
This is my experience. I have been there several times but never to the "real Baltimore", only the Inner Harbor and Fells Point. It's crazy how a city can keep small pockets of the city clean and local crime away from tourist areas.
southphillyman··on Tesla owners protest over drastic price cuts
A lot of modern supercars appreciate rapidly now days it seems. A a 3 yr old used LaFerrari will likely cost you triple the original price for instance

southphillyman··on Starbucks' music is driving employees nuts
This is a normal part of working retail. I'll forever have Smooth by Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas etched into my memory from my time working at Blockbuster Video in the early 2000s
southphillyman··on A Beach Nobody Can Touch
I went there in Sept 2017 and there were only a handful of people on the beach. I'm not sure how you restrict these places when you can pay a sailor $50 USD to take you to all of these places for the day. Overcrowded beaches are not a bad thing just have some sort of maintenance budget
southphillyman··on Toyotas and Chevys Are Holding Up Better Than Most Luxury Brands
Not sure what year the shift started but Hondas stopped getting high ratings for reliability some time in the 2000s. I retired my 2002 Civic with 250K miles on it a couple of years ago.
southphillyman··on NBC took Bob Costas off the Super Bowl for speaking out about concussions
>I'm just saying, the guy got repeated tryouts

He never got any try out's. That's the whole basis of his grievance. The Bronco's offered to trade for him before he was cut, but he'd take a $4million paycut so he declined. After he was cut there were no try outs or offers.

southphillyman··on Companies Manipulate Glassdoor by Inflating Rankings and Pressuring Employees
I did exactly this once before, except I gave two week notice. I walked into the meeting knowing I had offer in hand but wanted to give my current employer a chance to do the right thing. The manager literally giggled and told me I may have to leave to get an increase. I had saw this company let several "rock stars" walk over money so I wasn't expecting much, almost felt bad for the manager cause he knew that corporate approach was laughable
