sourdoughness··on Part 2: Investigating Logan Paul's biggest scam (Coffeezilla) [video]
Tamagotchi plus the jackpot-allure of both crypto-obscure-coin and overpriced Pokémon cards.
sourdoughness··on When splines were physical objects (2016)
Boat builders do talk about “fair battens”, where batten = spline, and “fair” refers to being linearly elastic. Boat building battens can be really long, so fairness is not guaranteed. Long battens are scarfed together out of pieces cut from the same timber plank to try to maximise uniformity.
sourdoughness··on Bamboo, ‘The Green Steel of the 21st Century’
That’s surprising - the termite nest would need to be inside the bamboo for that to happen… moving the workers on their own won’t cause termites to spread.
sourdoughness··on Giving cars big cartoon eyes will make them safer
Presumably the sensors in the car can detect multiple people in a wide (360 degree?) arc/circle… but the eyes can only acknowledge a single person at a time. If you’re standing next to another person, how do you know that the eyes are looking at you and not the person next to you?
sourdoughness··on Pangea Aerospace successfully hot fire tests the first MethaLox aerospike engine
He’s be the first one to tell you that he’s an amateur who is always trying to learn more.
sourdoughness··on Pangea Aerospace successfully hot fire tests the first MethaLox aerospike engine
I think that’s over-stating it. His content is deliberately designed to be accessible to everyday people, so it necessarily needs to be limited in depth and detail. Having heard him on podcasts and other settings, his knowledge seems plenty in depth to me (an amateur enthusiast who wants lots of detail) for that role. He’s not an engineer, and that’s fine.
sourdoughness··on Ask HN: Neurological Effects of Computer Programming?
Plus one here: I get a strong case of the cliche “man must fix problem” after a solid day of programming. It’s helpful when you can keep it in balance, but it’s definitely not the right tool for all situations.
sourdoughness··on One Lost Methyl Group = Huge Amounts of Food Production
There’s discussion on the link itself that this trade off might not be present here: the reason plants haven’t evolved more efficient enzymes themselves is that they don’t naturally have the selection pressure to produce the heavy crops we want. A plant with a less efficient enzyme could still be optimal for its environment, therefore there are resources available that it has no need to use.

Since we have different priorities than the plant does, we can “optimise” it to take advantage of resources that it never would on its own.

sourdoughness··on One Lost Methyl Group = Huge Amounts of Food Production
Starch, protein, total carbohydrate and vitamin C levels did not seem to be affected in the crops in the study.
sourdoughness··on Tesla Model S Plaid caught fire while driver was at the wheel, says fire chief
Holy shit - it has _no spare at all_ and no run-flat tyres? That is totally insane to me - living in the country, I hate the idea of the donut spare, but at least you can drive a reasonable distance on it.
sourdoughness··on Tesla Model S Plaid caught fire while driver was at the wheel, says fire chief
Yep
sourdoughness··on One Thousand Mile Cannon Could Bring Back Battleships
It really does sound like bullshit at first glance. Just the most basic projectile motion shows you need a muzzle velocity of something like 5km/s, without factoring in drag, friction, etc. With those, you probably need more like double that. What kind of projectile is going to handle being accelerated to that speed over the length of even a very long gun barrel, in sea-level air? 10kg at 10km/s is 500 megajoules of kinetic energy. What the hell is going to be propelling that thing?
sourdoughness··on Show HN: Ruby One-Liners Cookbook
Rails leans on meta programming for a lot of its magic (though less so than it used to in early versions). You don’t generally use it as a user of Rails, though.
sourdoughness··on GitHub is working on renaming default branch from “master”
Master in git doesn’t (as far as I understand) refer to master/slave architecture though. It’s a “master” as in as in the version from which copies are derived.
sourdoughness··on GitHub is working on renaming default branch from “master”
After watching a lot of Lock Picking Lawyer episodes, I’d propose the word they need to change is “Lock”.
sourdoughness··on Google plans to give slow websites a new badge of shame in Chrome
Ding ding ding! We have a winner, ladies and gentlemen!
sourdoughness··on Marree Man
I don’t think it’s even really visible from the ground - maybe a vaguely scuffed and cleared strip of dirt.
sourdoughness··on Marree Man
People might know it better as an _atlatl_. Generically, it’s a “spear-thrower”. It’s amazing how much difference they make - good fun to make in the backyard!
sourdoughness··on Marree Man
Not legal, but I’d imagine you could push that ceiling safely and without any consequences out there. Problem is taking photos from illegally high makes the wrong kind of evidence.
