Where is the data that shows there are a disproportionate number of white men among the unemployed population? Without that data, this kind of rhetoric can only be seen as a pretext for actual discrimination.

Also, you think jumping to support someone who got backlash for claiming that only a third of the London population (aka white people) are "native" to the city and the rest should be driven out of their homes is "extremely reasonable"? It boggles my mind that people are lining up to say how normal this is. It's anything but.

Or maybe, just maybe, a system that doesn't create massive concentration of wealth won't try to divert people's focus by pitting people against each other and building concentration camps. Governments aren't fundamentally wasteful. In fact, an effective government is an absolute requirement for functioning healthcare, fair wages, consumer protection, and actual public safety that protects all people equally.

This isn't to diminish all the good things charities have done, but charities are fundamentally band-aid solutions to a dysfunctional society. Leaving welfare at the mercy of wealthy individuals as the wealth gap keeps getting bigger and bigger is a losing strategy. It shouldn't be the state of things people should be aiming for.

soraminazuki··on Ask HN: How can DigitalOcean not afford $50, but can afford $3M to Omarchy?
What's your idea of a smart responsible adult then? Is it continuing to push on a red herring after being called out thrice? Putting words into someone's mouth instead of honestly engaging with what's being actually said? Attacking your opponent for someone else's actions out of desperation? Throwing a tantrum and resorting to crude insults when challenged? All of this just to defend a white suprematist? Sheesh.

By all means keep doing what you're doing. Just don't act surprised when people don't look up to you and take your words with respect.

soraminazuki··on Ask HN: How can DigitalOcean not afford $50, but can afford $3M to Omarchy?
Despite it being so common, I'm still bewildered by people wearing their racism like a badge of honor, while at the same time trying to discredit the term so that no action can ever be described as such. Like, pick one, not both.
soraminazuki··on Ask HN: How can DigitalOcean not afford $50, but can afford $3M to Omarchy?
Nitpicking on a rhetorical exaggeration is a form of fallacy, not a serious rebuttal. Throwing in words like "accountability" while doing so makes it look even more unserious. But I'm sure a smart person who couldn't resist the urge to say "stupid" 3 times in one reply can figure that out for themselves.
soraminazuki··on Ask HN: How can DigitalOcean not afford $50, but can afford $3M to Omarchy?
> You display a common lack of reading comprehension.

Nah, my reading comprehension is fine. If anything, you should go look up the definition for "compare" before you start grading other people.

> There’s nothing racist about it

If comparing people to wolves that should be killed based on their race isn't racist for you, what is?

> “brown” and “white” are words that you read into the text

No, it's very clear what DHH means. The Romanis (paraphrasing since DHH only referred to them by a slur) vs. the "native" Danish, the "native Brits" vs. the other 2/3 of the London population. DHH is discriminating based on skin color, that's an unambiguous fact.

> so that you could be angry

I'm not angry, just appalled at you and DHH's racism. I'm not the one angrily hurling crude insults and incoherent rants repeatedly.

soraminazuki··on Ask HN: How can DigitalOcean not afford $50, but can afford $3M to Omarchy?
> You are just upset about it because you’re not “right wing”.

Huh? Yes, I am appalled by someone who literally compared brown people to wolves that should be shot for the protection of the "human" population, which is to mean, white people. That's an ideology that neither deserves respect nor equal protection under the law.

> It doesn’t even matter if Omarchy was some kind of sekret “right–wing influence campaign” as you say

I didn't claim it was "sekret." On the contrary, it's playing out in the open for everyone to see. Wealthy companies and individuals are pouring obscene amounts of money into a fund centered around someone's personal dotfiles with hotkeys for launching a bunch of commercial software. DHH claims to support other projects with that money, where most of the actual work is done, but projects that have any shred of conscience are avoiding their money like the plague. In effect, it's funding projects that don't have an issue with ethnic cleansing. Digital Ocean even withdrew funding from projects that didn't take DHH money, effectively punishing them for their stance. If something quacks like a duck, it's a duck. That fund is, for all intents and purposes, a right wing influence campaign.

I know you won't be changing your behavior over this, but despite your attempt at putting together a debate-me-bro response, you couldn't even resist the urge to resort to crude name-calling. And no, adding "useful" before "idiot" doesn't hide your petty emotions. It's embarrassing.

soraminazuki··on Ask HN: How can DigitalOcean not afford $50, but can afford $3M to Omarchy?
> And yeah, you are missing the point.

I think I'm pretty on point if someone insists on focusing on trivial technicalities while ignoring the bigger picture.

soraminazuki··on Collapse of Personal Computing: Investigation into the Destruction of Ownership [video]
> And we're not the only ones interpreting this as if the AI companies have ambitions of leveraging rising prices to convert the possibility of computer ownership into rentership. Just as we've seen with home ownership, it's as if Nvidia, OpenAI, Oracle, Meta, and Google are digital lords of a feudalistic kingdom, accepting perpetual rent for a spot on their cloud as ownership is priced out of possibility. Many of our contacts in the industry, catering to consumers buying and owning highly personalized PCs, also think they see this trajectory.

> "They're not even trying to help us. I think for them, it would be even great if none of us exists. So they can just do whatever they want."

> "I think eventually component business is going to shrink even more. Sustaining your business can shrink as well because a lot of this will become AI based, cloud-based kind of a program. So then people don't need to have a system at home anymore. They can just have a handheld, basically a terminal to play."

> "We've definitely seen an increasing trend in rental programs or cloud compute services, right? And so, as much as we'd love for you to buy and own, we do recognize that the individual's financial situation is ultimately going to be the determining factor. If they need access to powerful compute and they can't afford to go out and build a PC, sure they might do a rental program, GeForce Now, right?"

> The consumer PC industry as we've known it our entire lives, that's gone. Like it's gone gone. We're so far gone that the consumers aren't buying this stuff anymore.

Holy shit this past 5+ years has got to be one of the darkest moments many of us saw in our entire lives. We've steadily been sleepwalking into a society where nothing binds the rich and powerful while the rest of us pays the price, but we've been accelerating towards that outcome even more in the past few years. Computing is so deeply integrated into our lives that the loss of personal ownership over computing will be one of the final blows to our freedoms and our very way of living.

I totally agree with you, but where are those trustworthy companies? It seems every household names in the consumer electronics space are hell-bent on abusing their customers in every conceivable way. Just look at the LG scandal, and that is standard practice across the entire industry. It has to start with strong consumer protection laws and strong enforcement of those laws.

soraminazuki··on Ask HN: How can DigitalOcean not afford $50, but can afford $3M to Omarchy?
It is perfectly reasonable to object to the social causes that large powerful companies decide to support. It's telling that a company decides to fund millions of dollars to an ideologically motivated right wing influence campaign targeting open source communities, which by the way mainly profits off other people's work, while pulling far more smaller amounts of funding from projects that do the actual work.

I'm sorry to break it to you, but Neovim isn't the best project to donate to. The lead maintainer supports numerous far right figures and recently went ballistic in the issue tracker when someone merely suggested removing a quote of endorsement on the Neovim website from someone who literally compared brown people to wolves that should be shot for the protection of the "human" population.

There was no pushback for the toxic behavior from his fellow maintainers, as the team includes both a speaker at a conference hosted by the person the lead maintainer so vehemently defended, and a Palantir employee who proudly displays their employer on their GitHub profile.

FOSS donations are awesome, but maybe not Neovim. I think Vim is a better choice for donations. All of the money goes to helping children in Uganda.

What you said "ruins Halloween" is this:

> I've been hearing about Halloween is National DeFlock Day for a while

According to you, that's "committing crimes." I know that times are different now, but thoughtcrimes and de facto criminalization without legal codification are supposed to be unjust and unconstitutional. It's even more ironic when someone so obsessed with law and order goes so far as to invent crimes while ignoring the actual crimes that prompted the protests in the first place. So hypocritical. Mass surveillance, stalking, and putting people behind bars without evidence is supposed to be illegal, you know.

Also, stalking is okay as long as it's normalized? Wow, that's literally the logic of predators. No wonder your reply is what it is. Our guiding ethics are incompatible on a fundamental level.

And this is where LLMs excel at: deflection of duty. The billionaire class are going to replace people providing critical services with LLMs, claiming that they do the job better than humans. And they will, just not in the way they want us to believe. These pseudo-intelligent computer programs will make sure the voices of people in need go nowhere, saving "costs." In doing so, they will be much more efficient than human beings, as they don't have those pesky "conscience" getting in the way. soraminazuki··on Mistral Patent for “Code implemented tool calls”
I'm skeptical of non-software patents as well. So much R&D are funded by taxpayer money yet private companies monopolize the profits. Patents are supposed to keep valuable knowledge public, yet that's not what happens because the primary motivation for patent applicants is to squash competition and they have an incentive to keep key information out. It seems all patents are doing is to make lives harder for the common people.
