sonaltr··on Pricing low-touch SaaS
any reason why it's 995 instead of 1000?
sonaltr··on Show HN: Deploy a Go Lambda to Ping a Site in 20 Seconds
Looks nice!

1. Why go? (nothing wrong with it in itself, but last I had checked (before go on lambda was released)...Python was supposed the fastest of the bunch available)

1 a. Python can be embedded into a CF template...meaning deployment is slightly nicer (maybe not recommended though?)

2. I think the ability to change the time (20 secs) based on an SSM parameter would be cool!

sonaltr··on What I Learned Burning $14k on YouTube Ads for Candy Japan
They don't have to guarantee results - Companies are becoming disillusioned about Ads as it is (since they don't understand technology and/or can't compete with companies that do)...we need a platform where such companies go back doing their core-services if you will and leave the rest to experts - As an example - a B2B company making some airplane part does not need to host it's own marketing site (for it's sales pipeline), measure KPIs on this site etc. - Instead, it could pay $X to an self-serve app, and let them manage everything about said content (maybe even help with the content creation as well) to achieve measurable results Y (KPIs).

I really like the honesty about how he lost money buying youtube ads...feels like there's definitely a market for an self-serve "pay x amount a month" for "y results" app if you will.
sonaltr··on Dropbox S-1
I thought Dropbox's revenue mainly comes from it's business clients - B2B is more $ compared to B2C although B2C might be more profitable as customers might pay the $10/1TB and not really use that much anyways)

Their paying users have increased, but the revenue per user has decreased (based on the S1...which I assume is because of enterprise deals).

sonaltr··on Dropbox S-1
apart from the bigger companies (like Fb), have there been any major SaaS companies (esp. B2B but I guess that's trying to be too narrow so B2B & B2C) that have moved from Cloud to their own Data Center? (I know Etsy comes to mind...but apart from them?).
sonaltr··on Dropbox S-1
For a B2B SAAS company...what's the ideal user cost of infrastructure? (I understand that it depends on the service..but a ratio of profit per user vs cost per user should be close no?)
sonaltr··on How Dropbox handles downgrades
That's super messed up if it's true...Usually when you pay for a yearly plan and stop paying, that "plan" continues till it expires at which point the service will stop working for you. That's not even hard to really implement - maybe a few weeks or a month of work considering Dropbox hires pretty talented engineers and solve much more complicated problems.
sonaltr··on Aws-virtual-bastion: A web terminal session to AWS EC2 instances without SSH
This is super awesome! We need a cli version of this! (yes I know I can use the aws cli...but a "shell" in my terminal would be great!)

The more I use AWS, GCP and Azure, the more I realize how much "nicer" it is on the AWS eco-system. While AWS in general is more expensive (to the point where in a large org, you'd need someone dedicated to keep track of cloud spending) - the ecosystem provided by Amazon is so far ahead in some cases

sonaltr··on Securing your Linux web server
One of the things that I'm super happy about is that for basic stuff I don't need to manage servers (static sites / web apps hosted on S3 etc., FaaS for basic Code) and when I do need to have full on servers, I can use something like GKE/EKS/AKE to just deploy containers and not manage the underlying infrastructure.

It's super awesome when working on personal projects! (although in a way I did enjoy doing all that in the first place)

sonaltr··on Why I Don't Like Golang (2016)
I'd check the internal folder (projectname/go/src/domain.com/username/projectname) into source control (domain.com/username/projectname).

Everyone has a different way they like to setup their environment and I didn't want to push my ideas onto other users.

sonaltr··on Why I Don't Like Golang (2016)
That's one of the first issues I've had with Go. To the point where, all my go projects are something along the following lines:

projectname:

  |- go
  |-- src
  |--- domain.com
  |---- username
  |----- projectname
  |------ Actual Code goes here...
  |-- pkg
  |-- bin
It's a fun time explaining this to anyone new on the team...
