sonabinu··on Ask HN: What’s the biggest difference between professional coding and academia?
In most cases, not enough testing
sonabinu··on How I learned to code in my 30s
I started in my 30s after an earlier stint in high school. It was a real struggle. I work in a SE engineering role now with a focus on data science. My stats and math skills have given me an advantage but I still feel like I'm a rookie in many ways. It is important for more of us who transition to SW careers to speak about our struggles and techniques to hang in there. It will render confidence to those who feel alone as they try to find their footing.
sonabinu··on Why do so few people major in computer science?
One of the biggest factors that made me withdraw from CS was learning programming in high school. I had a teacher who wasn't able to communicate effectively and my own ego being bruised badly when I struggled and struggled to make code work. My second act more than a decade later gave me confidence with better teachers and internships where I saw even seasoned programmers make mistakes and develop multiple iterations before being done. This was an eye opener!
sonabinu··on Transitioning into a big data/ analytics career
Thank you! I appreciate the time you took. Yes, you are definitely a part of the target audience I am hoping will take the survey
sonabinu··on An Indian village addicted to chess
This is Kerala - women definitely have a major role and this is the best state in India for gender equality. Women even outnumber men in this state. This is also a state that historically had a matriarchal society.
sonabinu··on Recent Graduates Are Most Likely to Work in Sales, Making around $40K
I don't know if it is intelligence alone - I would call it 'grit' as well. If you are willing to slog through a tough class and use good learning strategies, you don't have to be super intelligent to enter into a career in engineering. Are we setting a bar that is high, where college is expected to be a lot of hard work? If we do, we will see those in all careers that require a college degree brining in something new to the work place. Maybe it is my midday coffee speaking but we need to stop diluting college courses
sonabinu··on US teen died after drinking caffeine too quickly, coroner says
Interesting how this story suddenly disappeared from the front page of hacker news.
sonabinu··on The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data
The value is in extracting meaningful information for decision making using data. Data is the crude. The one who wins is the one who knows how to make it fuel?
sonabinu··on Real books are back. E-book sales plunge nearly 20%
This is personally true for myself. I have been buying more books lately!
sonabinu··on Robert M. Pirsig has died
It's one of the few books I've read multiple times! And it's still on my reading list.
sonabinu··on Dr John Goodenough’s story suggests some people become more creative with age
I think the hardest part of anyone's career is when the children are young - you do not have time. Unfortunately, it is also the time that you have the moment to spring up in your career because you have experience and energy (which you use for the kids of course and not self growth)
sonabinu··on Horlicks, a drink Brits go to bed with and Indians wake up with
oh the amount of Ovaltine my mother made me drink as a kid !!!
sonabinu··on New institute aims to make Toronto an ‘intellectual centre’ of AI capability
The tightening of (or perception of tighter) visas in the US may result in more grad students considering Canada as a potential destination than the US. Industry is likely to follow where the talent goes and this could result in wage equilibrium
sonabinu··on Ask HN: Which non-technology book has influenced you the most and why?
The alchemist
sonabinu··on Ask HN: Developers with kids, how do you skill up?
Sorry! I think I goofed up https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/developers-kids-how-do-you-sk...
sonabinu··on Google is acquiring Kaggle
Hate to think that some of the beauty of Kaggle being independent will be lost but that's likely
sonabinu··on Ask HN: Developers with kids, how do you skill up?
Cut down on TV. Wake up super early on Saturdays and get about 3 hrs of skill building time. Occasionally take a day off work to do a straight 8 hr skill session for self. Find a friend at work to do a class with and make a plan with your significant other for one hr a week to dedicate to the class. You and your friend can keep each other motivated!

I feel this is a super important question. I've published it on LinkedIn with my thoughts. Hopefully, you will get some feedback there as well! https://www.linkedin.com/post/edit/6245042931087007744 Good luck!

sonabinu··on Ask HN: What books fundamentally changed the way you think about the world?
The Story of Philosophy by Will Durant
sonabinu··on Life may be getting better at evolving
There is some similarity in the work by Leslie Valiant where he uses an “ecorithm” approach uses computational concepts to explore fundamental mysteries of evolution and the mind. Incidentally, he is the man behind PAC ;) https://www.quantamagazine.org/20160128-ecorithm-computers-a...
sonabinu··on I Rewired My Brain to Become Fluent in Math (2014)
Most Asian parents focus on math mechanics but forget that math is essentially problem solving. As a child I had the concepts down solid, which helped me when I went back to University to do math classes but doing applied math had been a hard mountain to climb. Learn to build DE models etc. has been v challenging.
sonabinu··on Software developers who started after 35, 40 or 50
I started later in life, after being a stay at home mom for 10 plus years. I went back to regular school and now I'm working as a Software Engineer. I need to look up more concepts and ask more questions but I'm getting there. It's a long road but one worth walking.
sonabinu··on Ask HN: Which book have you re-read recently?
The Alchemist
sonabinu··on What is it like to be poor at an Ivy League school? (2015)
'common sense'?
sonabinu··on ‘Artificial Intelligence’ Was the Fake News of 2016
There has certainly been advances. It does not happen overnight - we stand on the shoulders of giants. The advances in speech recognition is in the mainstream media today but decades of work and research have contributed to the advances. Similarly the work today will contribute to future advances and what 2016 did was give the readers of mainstream media a glimpse of what we will see in the years to come.
sonabinu··on Natural Language Corpus Data: Beautiful Data
Beautiful data is a beautiful book!
sonabinu··on The bank lent me $2m so I spent it on strippers and cars
I am actually wondering how this article is so blog like and still made it onto bbc and makes you think it has some journalistic thought given to writing style and content
sonabinu··on Steve Wozniak Was My Computer Teacher in 1995
Starting writing BASIC without telling us what we were doing. Kept using technical terms that sounded like a foreign language. Told me it's ok if I did not understand - girls don't always get it fast! Well, I later learned that the guys who got it had PCs at home (huge luxury when I was in high school ) and went for private lessons in Programming.
sonabinu··on Steve Wozniak Was My Computer Teacher in 1995
It's so important that you have a good inspiring CS teacher when you start learning the ropes. The first person who taught me computing was the reason I stayed away from going into CS for 15 years before taking it up a second time. This time round my community college math teacher taught us how to program a TI-84 and encouraged us to do so. I went on to download R because I read that it was best for statistics and learnt more stuff later. An inspiring teacher who goes out of their way to ensure that your learning roadblocks are removed is the best!
sonabinu··on An open source deep learning curriculum
Agree ... I think we have a small group here who is interested
