somethoughts··on Driverless semis have started running regular longhaul routes
Yes - agreed if we had dedicated truck train roads.

The proposal I would prefer is to do more of a time based multiplexing of the road between daytime auto traffic and night time truck train traffic. And I'm not saying autos couldn't drive at night, just people could decide whether they want to trust the autonomous truck software.

As it stands we probably won't get that choice and its just shoved upon us.

somethoughts··on Driverless semis have started running regular longhaul routes
Slight difference is that there are more lanes and there's dual usage (daytime - regular auto access, nighttime - truck train access).

The benefit is to utilize existing access rights and infrastructure.

somethoughts··on Driverless semis have started running regular longhaul routes
I feel like the ideal scenario would be to prioritize self driving truck at set times and set long haul freeways (i.e. Long Beach to Las Vegas or Galveston to Dallas) during the night time when there is no regular auto traffic - for example from 1 am-6 am.

That way if a human driver is concerned, they can choose not to drive during this period of time.

Perhaps run the trucks in a train style configuration where a "conductor" can sit in the lead truck and manage any emergency issues that arise (i.e. security, crash or weather related).

If fully autonomous, I could see securing the cargo being real issue - what would stop a few cars passage in front of the truck and helping themselves to the cargo.

somethoughts··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
It'd be an interesting strategy if you could split the organization based on departments that depend heavily on federal funds (i.e. perhaps STEM fields such as medicine and physics/hard sciences, etc.) and those that are not (and perhaps simultaneously requiring more freedom of thought).

Perhaps resurrect the Radcliffe College to support the more intellectual, free thought based departments. [1]

somethoughts··on We Should Own the Economy
Been listening to All-In podcast and they've been talking like this - its really amusing to see them (and this author) get excited by what are essentially taxes with a different narrative (i.e. US sovereign wealth fund, give cash to US citizens to invest in S&P, NASDAQ, crypto to give them skin in the game).

The infrastructure for this is already there, it just needs to be rebranded and given a new narrative to make it acceptable for both the billionaire class. Instead of calling it taxes and social security, redistributive policies should be rebranded as patriotic profit sharing with the US government.

The US government's job would still be to pool resources to provide educated employees for companies to hire, well functioning transportation systems for companies to use, rule of law for companies to benefit from and pensions systems/basic healthcare for company employees/retirees.

In exchange for access to this US infrastructure, US and foreign corporations operating in the US would contribute to the US Freedom Dividend which will be shared across Americans to provide a baseline standard of living and allow them to invest to have skin in the game.

To get companies and wealthy individuals to willing participate in redistributive policies it seems we just need to avoid messaging it as punitive and/or as retribution for being successful (i.e. the Elizabeth Warren/AOC approach). We need to reframe it in language they speak - patriotism and profit sharing - and reframe them as the heroes for funding all the infrastructure and not the enemies.

I think there would be mind shift among the populace if they actually had more of a clear map as well from S&P500 companies winning and their own pocketbooks benefitting.

somethoughts··on Should managers still code?
On the flip side - I find it very understandable that one might not want to have ever worked at Amazon even in its early days and instead would prefer to work (or have worked) at a much smaller, engineering focused organization.

There's probably also a case where Putin needs to be in a position to save face in order not to be overthrown - which could be even more dangerous.

On the other hand this might all just be trying to pretend there's a coherent strategy when its all just actually chaos.

somethoughts··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
I don't know if it's 6D chess but it probably was more of a chaos monkey/bury the lead strategy that doesn't take much brain power (i.e. flood the zone).

My hot take is Matt Gaetz, the Greenland purchase and the Canada as the 51st state were all distraction techniques to get the other nominees through.

somethoughts··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Perhaps (hopefully) you are right and its just bread and circuses for us. They really are playing 6D chess and it's really about just being irrational, art of the deal style.

Cool. Wasn't aware of that.

Another one is ground.news [1] which lets you compare multiple headline news articles from various sources together.

somethoughts··on Jeff Bezos' revamp of 'Washington Post' opinions leads editor to quit
It'd be interesting if a paper could present opposing op-eds side by side by authors that are clearly the strongest on each side of the discussion. Similar to collegiate debates or the argument/rebuttal style used for the ballot propositions we vote on.

Often times - in today's media one side will present the other sides case by only addressing some strawman arguments.

somethoughts··on Disclosure of personal information to DOGE “is irreparable harm,” judge rules
At what point can we start calling them Texas Tech Bros? The two primary ones are pretty much living mostly in Texas and Florida at this point.
somethoughts··on [dead]
Funny that there is an entire site dedicated to this topic/person.
somethoughts··on Texas Tempts Meta
When enough of tech bros move to Texas - is there any chance we can we start referring to tech bros who live in Texas as "Texas tech bros" instead of "Silicon Valley tech bros"?

Like Peter Thiel hasn't lived in Silicon Valley for seemingly a decade now but he's still referred to by the media as a Silicon Valley tech bro when he's actually just a billionaire who happened to live in Silicon Valley for awhile.

somethoughts··on Sweden brings more books and handwriting practice back to its schools (2023)
Not that this would be better but I'm surprised no ebook maker has had success in the educational market. Eink seems like it'd be great for education as it'd really only support text based distractions/bullying which while bad is less bad than the trifecta of video, images and text distractions/bullying. Its also lighter and the battery is longer lasting than a laptop.
somethoughts··on Qantas South Africa flights delayed by falling debris from SpaceX rockets
Amusingly I think it's great that Elon had a very public divorce with Silicon Valley. Otherwise I could easily see this having been titled "Qantas South Africa flights delayed by falling debris from Silicon Valley based SpaceX rocket" for maximum clicks.
somethoughts··on Apple will soon receive 'made in America' chips from TSMC's Arizona fab
My hot take as to the reason EE is a bit of a dead end in the US is that the options outside of the handful of primary employers are limited. It is very capital intensive to run a semiconductor fab, design chips or assemble electronics at scale. Therefore the employer has all of the leverage. The equipment and/or factory worker infrastructure comes first and the engineering teams are just a cog.

Compare that to having all the degrees of freedom as a computer science student to start up a niche mobile app or internet based niche service after working at FAANG for 5-6 years. Even AI infrastructure will eventually go down in price making niche AI first startups a possibility. In finance its the same, as a post i-banker you have the option to start a boutique fund, a niche fintech or just invest your own savings.

somethoughts··on Judge ends man's 11-year quest to dig up landfill and recover $765M in Bitcoin
Kind of interesting to imagine long term inflation due to long term lost crypto. It seems much easier to lose large amounts versus fiat currencies.

Electronic money can be recovered (i.e. its given over to the government if left unclaimed as far as I know). And its hard to lose that much physical cash.

somethoughts··on Employees are bypassing HR, sharing on LinkedIn
To be honest - the great thing is that even if a small percentage of people choose the LinkedIn/Social Media shame route, it benefits everyone. Just the threat of this will probably make employers/managers think about the potential consequences of such actions.

That said - it'd be recommended that the employee have a pretty air tight story since there internet can easily turn the other way.

somethoughts··on Finland's zero homeless strategy (2021)
I think the challenge is that some will use it as a jumping of point to change their lives and some will use it to stick to their poor lifestyle habits and expect the provider of the housing to provide free house cleaning, free maintenance and free meals and in exchange be a community nuisance.

The latter ruins it for the former.

As a taxpayer, I would be willing to provide free housing in a lower cost of living area, in exchange for the receiver maintaining the home, no issues with the law and perhaps helping others build their homes, etc.

somethoughts··on Starlink is now cheaper than leading internet provider in some African countries
Without seeing the underlying costs its hard to really know if this is like early Uber/Lyft where investors are trying subsidizing growth of a service in order to grow marketshare.

Long term - once the local ISPs are out of business, then do prices go up and to either cover costs and/or excess profits start to go to the investors.

somethoughts··on Next stop: Miami
Interestingly is there a potential moral issue in the making here? What happens if/when self driving dependency is so prevalent that the majority of inhabitants in a city don't know how to drive. In addition add the fact that self driving cars don't have a steering wheel so even people who know how to take over driving can't actually take over.

What happens if there's an event that requires a mass evacuation such as a Category 5 hurricane and the major self driving car companies deem it too risky to drive in the conditions that precede the storm?

somethoughts··on The Great Grocery Squeeze: federal policy change in '80s created the food desert
I don't think alibaba handles grocery as far as I know - at least in the US.

Probably it is most similar to Instacart/Amazon Grocery delivery but the issue with these is that they are more oriented toward high value, high convenience, high immediacy, highly customizable orders for groceries items.

The flip side would be a set time (i.e. Saturday or Sunday), a set location (i.e. local school parking lot), a set number of bulk items (i.e. eggs, bread, pasta, chicken legs, ground beef, milk).

somethoughts··on A federal policy change in the 1980s created the modern food desert
Its kind of interesting if Walmart and/or Costco has squeezed prices so low that you could potentially use it as the basis for informal neighborhood bulk buying co-op. Like an Uber app which coordinated grocery buying and splitting up bulk packaged foods into smaller purchase sizes.
somethoughts··on Tech jobs are mired in a recession
I second this explanation. In fact its not just startups but also a lot of big tech companies were rationally taking advantage of the low interest rates to pursue speculative bets/product features. Tech CEOs were being richly rewarded via inflating stock prices for chasing the potential for future cashflows.

When the macro changed, those bets no longer made rational sense.

The silver lining for guys like Jon Bach (as described in the intro) is that with the abundance of free agents and SF/SV office space, it's probably the a great time to form/find an ambitious team and help try to bootstrap the next Google.

somethoughts··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
Interestingly if I recall correctly a lot of the original talent for Chrome/Chromium originally worked at Mozilla and were poached by Google. [1]

somethoughts··on Maybe Bluesky has "won"
I think the difference as I see it is that Twitter/X is oriented around increasing levels of "engagement" and encouraging contributors to focus on going viral in hopes of going even more viral by reaching the "For You" feed.

Bluesky seems a bit more like a 140 Characters mashed with Reddit with subtopics/submods of feeds as the focus. Also it seems to highlight the custom feeds feature which you can manage yourself. Twitter/X has such features but for the most part you are nudged away from these to improve "engagement" metrics. That said its highly possible that could change over time based on the long term vision.

somethoughts··on Maybe Bluesky has "won"
I agree - short form content doesn't leave enough space to have a nuanced arguement and conversely it leaves a lot of space open for misinterpretation and encourages hot takes and mic drops over expression of cohesive thoughts.
somethoughts··on Maybe Bluesky has "won"
It'll be interesting if Twitter/X does drift rightward amongst contributors and still keeps its For You feed oriented toward "engagement" and view counts, whether or not it will just end up leading to infighting between far right and moderate right views.
