someotheridiot··on Rebrickable helps breathe new life into your kids’ old Lego sets
I'm still lurking around, don't have time to contribute much here anymore :)
someotheridiot··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2015?
https://rebrickable.com - A LEGO database that shows you which sets you can build from your existing collection, also includes thousands of fan-submitted designs.

Although at the moment it is far from passive (probably spend more time on it than my full time job), but it can be left alone for a little while and still generate income.

someotheridiot··on Ask HN: What is your job role and what are the side projects you are working on?
I'm a dba but do a lot of automation and build self service websites for internal use.

My side project is http://rebrickable.com which will calculate what LEGO sets and custom fan creations you can build by reusing your existing collection of sets and loose parts.

someotheridiot··on Ask HN : What side project are you working on?
I have no interest in food, so no :)

someotheridiot··on Ask HN: Which cloud do you use, and why?
I'd also like to see a storage server - one with more storage than usual, without the necessary increase in cpu/memory/price.
someotheridiot··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
http://rebrickable.com - Figure out what new cool stuff you can build with your old LEGO collection.

someotheridiot··on The Future of Humanity with Elon Musk: Interview by Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Well if the interviewers would stop asking the same stupid questions over and over again he might get a chance to say something different. I felt this interview was a completely wasted opportunity by NGT.
someotheridiot··on Side projects
I've been doing that for 3+ years now. If you truly enjoy what you are doing in your side project it can work. If not, perhaps you are just doing it for the money?
someotheridiot··on Side projects
Wife and 2 kids with full time job here, trying to build a side project currently worth approx $1-2k/month. If you're not prepared to spend the hard hours to build it up, you're not going to succeed. Suck it up if you believe in it. Sorry to be so harsh, but most people don't get fairy tale success stories.
someotheridiot··on What Happened with Lego: The price of a brick
I cringe at the "I wrote a web scraping program to go through the Brickset database". Brickset and Rebrickable both have awesome APIs that can provide all this data in an easily digestible format.
someotheridiot··on What Happened with Lego: The price of a brick
Thanks for the link, I built this site :)
someotheridiot··on Those making $1,000+/month on side projects – what did you make?
http://rebrickable.com - using your existing LEGO collection, find other stuff you can build. Thousands of custom designs with building instructions and parts lists.
someotheridiot··on A plane that will be able to fly anywhere in the world within 4 hours
They can't maintain orbit at Mach 5, it's just not fast enough. IIRC you need Mach 25 for LEO.
someotheridiot··on Ask HN: Examples of profitable little free web tools?
http://rebrickable.com - a tool to show you what LEGO sets you can build with the parts you have. It has a large collection of fan made creations, all with building instructions.
someotheridiot··on Race and Attraction, 2009 – 2014
I'm white and married to a Vietnamese. The different culture in her family is a big attraction to me, so much more interesting than boring same old.
someotheridiot··on Don’t Quit Your Day Job: Using Wage Earnings to Support a New Business (2012) [pdf]
I'm in a similar position. I have a day job and a family with two young kids. I get home and am exhausted but push through as late as I can every single night to build up my side business. The month over month growth and promise of future payback is what drives you to keep going. That plus you need to be a bit of a work-a-holic to start with anyway.
someotheridiot··on Sunfish: A simple but strong chess engine in 111 lines of Python
Correct, that's what it is doing. It is a very fast and surprisingly strong way of evaluating the position. Of course stronger engines do a hell of a lot more than this and gives weightings based on the positions of other pieces, but most of them have something like this as a baseline.
someotheridiot··on What was your best passive income in 2014?
$2500 for Dec/2013 (close enough to 2014) http://rebrickable.com - reuse your LEGO pieces to build other cool stuff. Not exactly passive yet, but maybe one day.
someotheridiot··on Progress Bar Badge for GitHub README Files
Wow, that's awesome. I'm trying to learn how to write web apps with Python and 2 mins with this has taught me more than hours of django tutorials!
someotheridiot··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
LEGO + databases = A lot of fun :)

someotheridiot··on Linode down in Newark data center
Thanks for the encouraging words ;) Still not up, 5+hrs outage so far... EDIT: it was up, but the network interface was messed up for some reason. Rebooted again and its ok now.
someotheridiot··on Linode down in Newark data center
Mine was rebooted 2hrs ago but still cant access it.
someotheridiot··on Ask HN: How do you earn your money?
I've worked almost 15 years in various IT roles, building up my skills (technical and otherwise). In my spare time (when I had it), I would also dabble in side projects. Some made money, most didn't. Eventually a side project started taking off and is now providing a nice bonus. I still work full time for someone else, but I aim to have the flexibility to choose what I want to do now and not just work for the money.

This stuff takes time and a lot of effort. You can't just build an app and sell it for $19B overnight.

someotheridiot··on Your best passive income? (2014)
Rebrickable (http://rebrickable.com) shows you what you can build with your existing LEGO collection, including hundreds of fan contributed designs. Not truly passive as I work on it every day.
someotheridiot··on Forget Setting Goals. Focus on Systems Instead
That was my first thought - "he just ripped off Scott!"
someotheridiot··on Ask HN: How do you drive web traffic to your successful side projects?
I run http://rebrickable.com and have built it up mostly via making it so awesome all my users drive the traffic for me :)
someotheridiot··on Ask HN: Those making $1,000+/month on side projects - what did you make?
Thanks, it's a lot of fun too :)
someotheridiot··on Ask HN: Those making $1,000+/month on side projects - what did you make?
http://rebrickable.com - a LEGO database that does some number crunching and tells you what you can build by combining parts from all your sets. Lots of user submitted content that is also searched and can be built, everything with instructions.
