someguy101010··on The West Coast is beating the East Coast on transportation?
What's funny is that they mention that NYC is reluctant to use scooters but don't mention how dangerous those things are in the snow. NYC has wayyy different weather than LA, Austin etc.
someguy101010··on Show HN: Strength News – An HN-inspired website for sport and gym enthusiasts
Why wouldn't you use a convenient tool at your disposal?
someguy101010··on Absolute Beginner's Guide to Emacs (2012)
That's much more recent than I expected
someguy101010··on What are you waiting for?
You don't even have to go that far, it's usually done between you and the router.
someguy101010··on Amazon FBA Experiment
Yeah everything that I've ever seen related to this stinks of a scam and that it's too good to be true. Also, a lot of survivorship bias as well.
someguy101010··on What are you waiting for?
If you are on a public internet connection you should. I could theoretically replace the content of that page with whatever I want. A crypto currency miner, some zero day JavaScript exploit that will download a key logger on your computer etc. Https helps to mitigate these sort of man in the middle attacks, even on static content.
someguy101010··on Heavy multitaskers have reduced memory
You pretty much described my day today

someguy101010··on How and Why Silicon Valley Gets High
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF01965761

Roland Fischer did an experiment in the 70s and found that students on lsd were able to identify parallel lines more accurately.

Iirc in gwerns experiment he dosed every day, and lsd tolerance builds pretty fast.

someguy101010··on How to start an e-commerce store that doesn’t dropship
One of the most annoying things about these kinds of posts is they always show revenue and never profits. I can buy something at $1m and sell it for $1m everyday and generate $1m in daily revenue but with no profits. Operating cost on these kind of businesses seem like they can add up quickly not to mention the time and effort.

That being said OP doesn't seem to be selling some sort of course on how to get a lambo in just three months, so I don't think he is being malicious. In fact the article seemed to be very well written from my skimming. Its just something I think people should keep in mind.

someguy101010··on GitHub Classroom report predicts positive student learning outcomes
Host your own git server! It's not super hard on a vps, you could also maybe look into gitlab, iirc it's open source and can be self hosted
someguy101010··on GitHub Classroom report predicts positive student learning outcomes
I am a self taught developer who never went to college, is git normally not taught in school?
someguy101010··on Show HN: Markdown New Tab – A new tab replacement to jot down notes in Markdown

someguy101010··on 'Unique' cannabis compound reverses brain aging in mice
Sounds horrible to live forever in a glass box
someguy101010··on Ask HN: What is your online privacy toolkit?
Pi-hole DNS with openvpn on a VPS, private email server on separate VPS, I should disable JavaScript but I develop in React. I want to roll my own private built server to host those servers in case the VPS provider has some ability to look at the data on my VPS
someguy101010··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
One of first scripts I ever wrote in python scraped a radio station for songs and added them to a spotify playlist.

someguy101010··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
link that thing dude or pm it to me
someguy101010··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
I'm also wondering if you could post that script, that sounds very interesting
someguy101010··on Launch HN: 70MillionJobs (YC S17) – Job board for people with criminal records
I commented this somewhere else, but I figured I would drop this link here for you too, https://www.doleta.gov/business/incentives/opptax/. You can get a pretty decent tax break if you hire a felon.
someguy101010··on Launch HN: 70MillionJobs (YC S17) – Job board for people with criminal records
"As an employer, I want to hire the best people so my company can be successful. Why would I hire anyone from your site when there are plenty of other candidates elsewhere?"

Not associated with that company but one reason to hire a convict is that you get a pretty decent tax break[0] out of it

someguy101010··on Facebook is building brain-computer interfaces for typing and skin-hearing
Nasa had an article[0] back in 2004 where they could detect what you were saying with sub vocalization on the skin and were already working on technology to read it through cloths back then, so not to get too tinfoil hat but that might not be all that bad of an idea.

someguy101010··on Ask HN: What laptop do you use?
I will never use a better keyboard than the thinkpad keyboard, I've even thought about getting one of these.

someguy101010··on Ask HN: What laptop do you use?
You're right! Mine does run pretty hot and was having overheating issues last summer, but once I replaced the thermal paste on it it hasn't had an issue since. Considering that it was a 9 year old laptop then I was very pleased that was the only issue that I've had with it thusfar
someguy101010··on Ask HN: What laptop do you use?
I use a thinkpad t61p. I've had it since 2011 and it still runs just a good as it did when I bought it. Its extremely modular, rugged, and has fantastic linux support. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it's battery life is pretty sub-par but most places that I use it have power outlets so it hasn't been an issue yet. It also has the best keyboard that I have ever used in my life by far.
someguy101010··on Reddit’s April Fools’ experiment
I was surprised at the lack of swastikas, curse words, and nsfw content on the canvas, but that may say more about me than anything else.
someguy101010··on Animista: a collection of ready to use CSS animations
That is true, but if the website is meant to be used as a resource then it should be designed to be easy to use and implement instead of having to look at the website's actual source html to get a feature working
someguy101010··on Animista: a collection of ready to use CSS animations
It would be nice if we had the html for some of the flip content, especially for the a/b content
