solutionyogi··on India's demonetisation of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes
I am originally from India, living in NYC for last 10 years.

Black money is a major problem in India, it's directly fueling This is an ingenious way to handle the problem at its root. I don't know how Government is going to handle this transition in a country as big and diverse as India. Personally, I prefer the rip-off-the-band-aid approach. The only thing I disagree with is the ATM daily/weekly withdrawal limit (10,000Rs/20,000Rs). I think this withdrawal limit is too low and would inconvenience lot of folks. I am not even sure what these low withdrawal limits are supposed to achieve.

I am late to the party, love all the suggestions especially brain.fm.

My go to has been the Spotify playlist called 'Beats To Think To'. It's non vocal, electronic repetitive beats. This is the only play list which worked for me. It used to be part of the 'Focus' play list group but was removed from there for some reason.

This is an unbelievable mix. Non vocal electronic music with perfect tempo and transitions. Thank you so much. I bought my brain.fm subscription but I didn't think I needed to. Please share if you have any other mixes like this.

solutionyogi··on The American chess champion challenging Iran’s hijab fetish
I am very surprised that you had that experience in metropolitan city like Delhi. What were the women wearing? I don't even know what kind of dress women will have to wear which covers theirs wrists and ankles.

Here's what you will find Indian women wearing in day to day life:

1. Educated, middle class: Salwaar Kameez, Jeans/Top, Skirt/Top. 2. Older or more conservative women: Sari. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sari Even Sari exposes a women's midriff and her hands.

Do you have any photo of the outfit that you are talking about?

I don't get it. Why is the solicitation a problem?

It's a different thing if he says that you must STAR before you can access the repo.

Your point about different social norms and rules is well taken. However, social norms are one thing and state enforced law is a different ball game.

A month ago, I went to Europe and my date had to wrap a scarf around her waist to visit a church (she was wearing shorts). That is totally cool. It's private property and they can set the rules as they please. But in public, women are free to wear what they want.

On a side note: I am from India and I don't know where you got this idea that women has to cover themselves from neck to wrists to ankles (not even the villages, see: https://www.google.com/search?q=indian+village+women&source=...). Yes, certain Muslim population do wear hijab/niqab.

solutionyogi··on In Brooklyn, Uber is now bigger than taxis
>>> Recommended pickup locations -> No longer door to door? Assigning next rides before the previous one has completed -> No longer "feeling like a baller" while your driver is fielding calls from other customers with you still in the car

Above is applicable only if you use UberPool. It's a great way to save money.

solutionyogi··on Ask HN: What C# books are highly recommended for professional .NET developers?
Without a doubt, C# In Depth by Jon Skeet. As the title suggests, it's a book which deep dives into how C# works.
solutionyogi··on Ask HN: What happens to people who graduate and can't find an entry job?
From your comment, it looks like you are hustling but haven't seen the results yet. Please do not give up and keep hustling.

Few notes:

1. Do you know about Ramit Sethi? He has tons of free material on finding a job. I would highly recommend that you go through it.

2. How systematic are you about your interviews? Do you have a log of all interviews and questions which you have been asked? I strongly believe that interviewing is a skill by itself. You need to work on it. When I was trying to break in to finance industry, I gave more than 40+ interviews before I could catch a break.

3. I have helped quite a few friends in their job search and all of them ended up in a better place. Though I have never had a chance to work with someone who is a fresh graduate. I live and work in NYC. Please contact me (details in my profile) and I will try my best to help you out.

Good luck.

As a software developer, I find your comment to be the most ridiculous.

Yes, it's on a higher end compared to what you would normally see but I would say that the regular salaries are too low. As a software developer, we have the capability to generate tremendous amount of value. Currently, most of the value is captured by C level executives (getting paid millions). Why should software developers not getting more in proportion to the value they add?

The links in the article are broken because of www prefix.

E.g. NSubsittue is here: http://nsubstitute.github.io/

And even though it's commercial product, one should mention TypeMock.

Copying my comment from last time which went unnoticed:

Thomas and Patrick: First, I want to thank you for trying to address one of the most frustrating part of a developer's career.

As you know very well, after Silicon Valley, it's the finance companies in NYC area who pay top notch developer salaries. Even though I am a competent developer, it was quite a struggle for me to break in to the finance industry (They only wanted to hire people with finance experience). It took me a little while but I was able to break in. Now I am over that hump but I am faced with another problem. I have been working in 'Back office' for hedge funds for several years and would like to transition to 'Front office' and I am faced with the same problem again. I am not able to switch roles because I don't have experience working in the front office. The Stock Fighter CTF is a perfect way to demonstrate the relevant ability to prospective employers. Do you guys have any plan to work with hedge funds/investment banks for your recruiting platform?

solutionyogi··on State of Starfighter
Have you seen their homepage?

https://starfighters.io/

"Starfighter is a recruiting firm that detects and introduces the best programmers on the market."

And to learn how they achieve it, see: https://starfighters.io/approach

And to provide some context as to why Patrick and Thomas are in this venture, http://sockpuppet.org/blog/2015/03/06/the-hiring-post/ (my all time favorite article by Thomas)

Hope this helps.

solutionyogi··on What I Learned Selling a Software Business
He is a prolific writer.

He is transparent. I first learned about him from the Business of Software forum and it's incredible to see the path he traveled. I feel like he is my close friend and I am rooting for him to succeed.

Not only he shares what he has learned, you can email him about specific things and get valuable advice for free for which he charges his clients several thousands of dollars.

Finally, everyone loves rags to riches story. In his case, he wasn't exactly poor, but he is a guy just like you and me and hustled his way to success [1].

[1] Success not in terms of millions he made but rather by living life on his own terms doing what he loves.

solutionyogi··on Ask HN: Who's making $300k to $1m as a cloud engineer?
I am really happy that you make 420k but I guarantee you that there are plenty of developers who make more than 220k. (I make more than that and in my know plenty of folks personally who make that amount) One easy to way more money than this is to work in finance space in NYC.
solutionyogi··on Etsy CTO: We Need Software Engineers, Not Developers
Long time ago* Eric Sink wrote this article named 'Small ISVs: You need developers, not programmers'.

http://ericsink.com/No_Programmers.html

I think Eric's article was able to articulate differences between a programmer and a developer. Reading this interview, I don't think Etsy's CTO is able to clarify what makes an engineer different from a developer.

solutionyogi··on Microsoft Acquires Xamarin
I strongly feel that they will provide a free edition which works with Visual Studio Code.
solutionyogi··on Microsoft Acquires Xamarin
As someone who works in .NET ecosystem, this is HUGE.

I think there is huge synergy [1] to be exploited by combining Xamarin's team with language/compiler design/visual studio team. I think MS is extremely well positioned to be a leading development platform across desktop/web/mobile in the enterprise space with this acquisition.

[1] Never thought I would ever use that word in a comment.

solutionyogi··on Akka, Haskell, Erlang, Go and .NET Core compared on 1M threads
Not sure what you mean by complete event loop. But I have a strong feeling that you are comparing apples to oranges in your benchmark.
solutionyogi··on Akka, Haskell, Erlang, Go and .NET Core compared on 1M threads
That looks better. However, I am really not sure what you are trying to achieve here. You didn't specify any scheduler, it means your tasks will use a default scheduler and that scheduler uses threadpool [1] and it will never create 1M threads. And as there is no actual work performed in the Task, things will run reasonably fast.

I am having hard time understanding what you are trying to test here. I am worried that .NET code is not really testing what you think it is.

[1] https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd997402(v=vs.110)....

solutionyogi··on Akka, Haskell, Erlang, Go and .NET Core compared on 1M threads
Doesn't matter. Unless you do TaskFactory.StartNew or Task.Run, it's not going to try to schedule work on another thread. Everything is happening in the main thread in your code.
solutionyogi··on Chart Shows Who Marries CEOs, Doctors, Chefs and Janitors
Is it me or the visualization is very hard to follow?

solutionyogi··on Writing an Async Logger in Nim
What a great article. Takes up a problem which everyone is familiar with and then describes how one will go about solving it in Nim.

I have been writing software for close to 15 years. When a new programming language comes out, I am looking to find out what it does better compared to the languages I already know. And generally, you never find material like that. After looking at this article, I realized that solving a familiar problem in a new language step by step is a PERFECT way to introduce me to your language.

Coming from C#, I learned that Nim language has the notion of a channel and how it makes cross thread communication easy.

solutionyogi··on Dead Certainty: How “Making a Murderer” Goes Wrong
Thank you so much for writing that up, that surely makes a lot of sense.

What is your opinion on Ken? The way he organized press conference before Avery's trial? The way he proposed two wildly different theories in two trials? Do you think it was right on Ken's part to do that?

What is your opinion on Dean Strang/Jerry Buting? Do you think they could have done more to establish reasonable doubt?

solutionyogi··on Dead Certainty: How “Making a Murderer” Goes Wrong
I have been meaning to ask you. What's the rationale behind allowing prosecution to have two different theories for two different trials for the same crime? How was this precedent set? Do you personally agree with it?
