solarengineer··on Nuclear reactors a mile underground promise safe, cheap power
Not wise to generalise - I'm an HN reader and I do not think "Greenpeace is omnipotent".

I used to be a Greenpeace supporter and would donate to them, even. Then I started to get harassed by their "premium donation agents" and stopped. Over the years, I have realised that they have taken up certain good causes (anti-oil, anti-whaling) but have also been rather misguided (e.g. stop all nuclear rather than argue for realistic-safe nuclear).

solarengineer··on Against all odds, an asteroid mining company appears to be making headway
Some points for you to consider:

Charcoal is very much in use around the world, forests are now small enough that entire forests are marked to make way for mines, and forests are not-self renewing on time nor does a mine convert back into a forest.

solarengineer··on Against all odds, an asteroid mining company appears to be making headway
Perhaps not productive farmland, but lots of forests have been cut down and have been proposed for deforestation to support mines

While checking out tptacek’s writing, I came across this gem.
solarengineer··on How we found and fixed an eBPF Linux kernel vulnerability
For those who read this thread - DTrace is in use in Solaris and in Illumos, and various of us who use Illumos for our production use cases (like Oxide does) still very much use DTrace.

I appreciate the rest of tptacek's comment which is informative. I also acknowledge that there may not be fuzzers written that have been disclosed.

solarengineer··on Show HN: Hanon Pro – piano technique and exercises for the digital age
Are there any exercise books or videos or schools that teach this concept of weight transfer that you speak of?

I am a one-finger pianist at the moment.

Please take some pride in your work. I ended up DTracing Zones and I find your ideas to be excellent.
solarengineer··on "Doors" in Solaris: Lightweight RPC Using File Descriptors (1996)
I had done the packaging work (like what Docker has done) as part of experiments with Belenix. I used puppet and rpm5 (that I had ported to Belenix) to ensure idempotency, and used ZFS snapshots for the layers. Unfortunately, life happened and I did not take the work live.

The nginx is the webserver that the user's browser can access. See: https://github.com/jlesage/docker-baseimage-gui?tab=readme-o...
solarengineer··on Making EC2 boot time faster
You could use SmartOS to achieve the same.

Linux containers no longer run natively and instead need to run within VMs.

solarengineer··on Making EC2 boot time faster
I should add - this is a full Zone with a number of services. One of my half-finished projects was to trace the call graph of the various services started and disable those not needed.
solarengineer··on Making EC2 boot time faster
Not an AWS example, but on my Illumos Zones on an i5 at Hetzner, I get from zero to ssh in under 50 ms. I am certain of the numbers since I have used DTrace to measure. It is unfortunate that Ilumos is not popular enough for a multitude of reasons.
solarengineer··on AI copilots are changing how coding is taught
One of the lessons that one learns as a programmer is to be able to write code that one can later read back and understand. This includes code written by others as well as code written by oneself.

When it comes to production quality code that should capture complex and/or business-critical functionality, you do want an experienced person to have architected the solution and to have written the code and for that code to have been tested and reviewed.

The risk right now is of many IT companies trying to win bids by throwing inexperienced devs at complex problems and committing to lower prices and timelines by procuring a USD 20 per month Github Co-Pilot subscription.

You individually may enjoy being able to put together solutions as a non-programmer. Good for you. I myself recently used ChatGPT to understand how to write a web-app using Rust and I was able to get things working with some trial and error so I understand your feeling of liberation and of accomplishment.

Many of us on this discussion thread work in teams and on projects where the code is written for professional reasons and for business outcomes. The discussion is therefore focused on the reliability of and the readability of AI-assisted coding.

solarengineer··on Windows 10 reaches 70% market share as Windows 11 keeps declining
An important comment.

"What's important" depends upon who is asking the question and who they are asking the question to.

I am a MacOS user now, but I wonder how Microsoft are faring in the aspects of stability, removal of bloat, fixing tech debt, refactoring of code to improve readability and bloat, addressing security issues, speeding up the builds, ensuring device driver stability on supported hardware, improving support for applications and use cases, improving actual as well as perceived speeds, and so on.

solarengineer··on Jimmy Carter UFO Incident
I have tried to photograph an aeroplane and also the moon with my iPhone 12 Max. The image quality is dismal.
solarengineer··on The NSA is just days away from taking over the internet
One possibility: You are allowed to have such discussions because these will be ineffective and forgotten within half a day while bringing about zero policy change. Most of us around the world do not know how to bring about a change in policy. Intellectual exchanges over such forums are certainly not the way.

I can think of two approaches for such companies:

a. Use commercial OS vendors who will push out fixes.

b. Set up a Continuous Integration process where everything is open source and is built from the ground up, with some reliance on open source platforms such as distros.

One needs different types of competence and IT Operational readiness in each approach.

solarengineer··on French Bulldog puppy spontaneously regrows jaw that was removed due to cancer
From the article:

--- The surgical team, led by Wright, managed to preserve a vital layer of tissue called the periosteum, which played a crucial role in Tyson’s recovery.

The periosteum, rich in blood vessels and nerves, is essential for bone growth and regeneration. ---
