sol_remmy··on Talent, luck and success: simulating meritocracy and inequality
You're still giving market share to the "open source winners". Linus and RedHat have both made piles of money.
sol_remmy··on Talent, luck and success: simulating meritocracy and inequality
Everyone in this thread directly supports inequality through their buying decisions and I'm callin' them out.

Anytime you use Netflix, Google, HackerNews is supporting inequality. Every time you bought a Harry Potter book as a kid you supported inequality. You're giving more money to the winners.

If you want to reduce inequality, then buy books from unpopular authors. Use unpopular OSes like TempleOS instead of giving even more market share to Google/Apple/Microsoft. Drive cars made by less popular manufacturers. Don't read the New York Times, Fox News, or Washington Post - only blogs or magazines with a small subscribership. And don't watch anything Disney.

sol_remmy··on Martin Shkreli has been sentenced to seven years in prison
Your sarcasm is showing your ignorance of the law. The level of monetary damages are absolutely considered when sentencing.

That is why Bernie Madoff, who caused billions in damages, got a very harsh sentence.

sol_remmy··on Martin Shkreli has been sentenced to seven years in prison
Because the sentence was WAY harsher than normal because of 1,2 and 4.

It was a white collar crime. NO monetary damages. And 8 years?? Clearly they sentenced him for 8 years for political reasons

sol_remmy··on Martin Shkreli has been sentenced to seven years in prison
> I don't think the outcome should matter.

According to the article, "prosecutors had pushed for at least 15 years, saying Shkreli had not shown remorse for his actions"

How come the jury is allow to consider his alleged lack of remorse but is not allowed to consider the outcome? Both are current events

sol_remmy··on Economist behind Uber study admits error, adjusts numbers
Would you prefer earning $10 with uber where you set your hours and have freedom or earning $10 at Walmart when you still have to work when your kid is sick
sol_remmy··on Uber self-driving trucks are now moving cargo for Uber Freight customers
Absolutely. Automated trucks will allow shipping costs to be much cheaper which will stimulate the economy in 1000 different ways
sol_remmy··on Dirt Poor: Have Fruits and Vegetables Become Less Nutritious?
Are you going to cite a source that substantiates this? CO2 emissions are a politically charged topic so there's an extra-strong reason to only believe a reliable source

Do you know of an uncensored forum that is better for discussing these issues? Is Slashdot better?

That violates that "Equal Opportunity" clause if you exclusively reach out only to certain groups
sol_remmy··on Ex-Google recruiter: I was fired because I resisted “illegal” diversity efforts
> White high school dropouts are wealthier than Hispanic college graduates.

What I'm seeing is "people who have lived in America for a long time (European heritage) are on average wealthier than people who arrived fairly recently from third world countries (Hispanic heritage).

Why is that surprising? Why is that a problem?

sol_remmy··on Ex-Google recruiter: I was fired because I resisted “illegal” diversity efforts
Problem is that leaving companies open to lawsuits from individuals, organizations like the NAACP, and even from the DoJ.

Whenever the demographics of a company do not match the demographics makeup of society at large, then the company is legally on the defensive. And the fines can be BIG

sol_remmy··on How much money do people need to be happy?
If you get univeral health care then your light-years ahead of Americans. Even if Americans are getting paid twice as much as you, they have the risk of going bankrupt during old age because of extremely high medical expenses

You have to realize how fortunate you are. Everyone in your country is taken care of. Screw the high salaries of Amercians, they're not worth it

sol_remmy··on Physics Makes Aging Inevitable, Not Biology (2016)
But computers are also very simple and very regimented systems where everyone makes the assumption that their state will never accidentally change and yet they still age
sol_remmy··on Advertisers Tuning Out TV in Sign of Trouble for Media Companies
Do you remember the news that insurers found Hotmail users are more likely to get into auto accidents and raised their rates? Hotmail users are people who haven't bothered to a superior service for over 10 years. I would not be surprised if those same people still exclusively watch TV instead of streaming
sol_remmy··on Physics Makes Aging Inevitable, Not Biology (2016)
"IMO, aging is just a way to ensure that dying occurs"

The research 100% disagrees with you.

Aging even occurs in computers: every computer will eventually get in an unexpected state that it cannot recover from. This could even be caused by a stray UV ray that flips a bit in an important memory sector.

sol_remmy··on The Case Against Google
I feel like media has become more monopolistic than tech and needs to be dealt with first.

I'm personally worried about the dominance of big newspapers. It seems that the field of "trusted online newspapers" has narrowed down to only the New York Times and Washington Post. Most non-Tech Hackernews submissions come from either Nytimes or WaPo.

I worry because these newspapers seem to increasingly be setting the political and social narrative for the entire country. That's a lot of power to give Jeff Bezos and Carlos Slim.

sol_remmy··on Can Uber Ever Deliver? Even After 4Q Cost Cuts, Uber Lost $4.5B in 2017
"predatory pricing"

So they're offering prices below cost and that is considered "predatory"? Last time I checked low prices are good for consumers

sol_remmy··on Email is your electronic memory
> It is clear from a slew of radical movements by the new US administration that it has contempt for consumers and has zero interest in enforcing existing laws against big corporations. It's all about growth at all costs, and government agencies that have explicit charters to protect consumers, the environment, and the marketplace, have been or are in the process of being gutted.

You reply to a comment and say it is pejorative and unhelpful but then politicize your own response as well. Your paragraph here is equally unhelpful.

sol_remmy··on How a Medical Catastrophe Can Bankrupt a Life
> It's definitely a problem that pricing is opaque and disconnected, but have you considered that maybe healthcare isn't a good candidate for a market solution?

Do you really think all healthcare - supplements, eye drops, family doctor visits, LASIK eye surgery - should be centrally controlled instead of using free market principles?

That's quite a claim to make. Cutting the entire healthcare industry off from the free market would only happen through government force.

sol_remmy··on India Wants to Give Half a Billion People Free Health Care
> And Chile is always a special case, the combination of natural resources, small population and good public systems does wonder for the country. Despite the extreme differences, I tend to compare Chile to the Nordic countries more than with LatAm.

You are flat out wrong with this comparison. Chile has one of the lowest tax burdens in the world. It can be accurately compared to either Hong Kong or Singapore.

Average tax burden by country: https://files.taxfoundation.org/legacy/docs/OECD_Tax_Wedge_C...

Scandinavian countries have 4x higher taxes than Chile. They are polar opposites.

sol_remmy··on India Wants to Give Half a Billion People Free Health Care
> Universal healthcare is cast as a 'populist' measure in the US. But if you look at data of cost of healthcare for nations applying universal healthcare vs those who do not in developed nations, India might rationally look at it as an economic efficiency measure.

You are using a bait-and-switch debate tactic. Nothing that you said disproves that claim that "Universal healthcare is a 'populist' measure"

sol_remmy··on Taxi deregulation coming to Finland
i.e. The government is reducing taxes and reducing services.

That's precisely WHY some people like Finland. The government is stepping out of the way (as we can see in this article)

sol_remmy··on U.S. To Probe Apple Over Updates That Slow Older iPhones
> No updates might actually be better than forced (practically? I don't use iOS) updates that make your device less desirable to you, and can't be undone

No real people hold this opinion. You don't hold this opinion.

You're saying that phone OS updates in general (whether from Google or Apple) are so low quality that its better NOT to get them on older phones?
