sol_remmy··on U.S. employment conditions compare poorly to the rest of the developed world
And the Western European governments have _death panels_ to decide who deserves medical care and who deserves to die.

And, in Western Europe, you must wait over a month for your non-urgent surgery, and much longer to be admitted into the ER. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/03/world/europe/uk-national-.... And you might die while waiting for your medical care: https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/bacchus-barua-/wait-times-cana...

And guess what, your taxes are 50% higher to pay for all this.

Notice how every sector of the economy that the government is highly involved with (health care, education, real estate) keeps increasing its costs?

Your inflated health care bills helped pay for the 280k average salary of physicians (source: https://www.medscape.com/slideshow/2018-compensation-overvie...), which is over 2x as high as Western european doctors' salary. You can thank the aggressive occupational licensing that the AMA engages in that prevents more potential doctors from joining the workforce and keeps salaries high. For instance: Western european doctors do not need a 4-year bachelors degree just to _enter_ medical school.

You are also sponsoring drug discovery. United States pays for the drug research, eats the high drug costs, and then Western Europe mooches off our R&D spending.

And guess what? Western Europe's free health care is not free: The 50% higher taxes in Western Europe are required to pay for all this.

sol_remmy··on Cities don't have to offer huge subsidies to companies like Apple and Amazon
It is a market - that's the whole point of the federation of states system that the founding fathers put in place.

If your state has bad laws, you can go to a different state.

Using government as a market has worked very well for both marijuana legalization and gay marriage advocates.

Except America does not practice the biblical definition of asylum just like it does not practice the biblical definition of marriage.

And in the ancient days, you often had to live in a country such as Judea for three generations before being accepted as a member of the country. You couldn't seek asylum and then be voting in elections five years later.

sol_remmy··on Half of all adults in the world have less than $2,300 in wealth (2016)
America can't afford universal health care - doctors get paid too much. The average doctor's salary here is over 300k USD. The average doctors salary in Europe is almost one-third of that..
sol_remmy··on Half of all adults in the world have less than $2,300 in wealth (2016)
And there are plenty of slackers who never accumulate any money but don't have catastrophic medical conditions. They will never declare bankruptcy.

OP is referring to those.

Where are the proceeds of the fine going?

This "fine" should be returned to the American people and not used to fund obscure government programs

sol_remmy··on Amazon worker’s median pay in 2017: $28,446
Don't forget that their cash assistance/stipend from CalWorks counts as part of their salary. So their real take home is 2k/month + monthly stipend.

You're doing incredible work though. You're allowing them to essentially apprenticeship with you to learn software development. Bravo sir

sol_remmy··on Amazon worker’s median pay in 2017: $28,446
$14 an hour is not as bad as you think. Median nursing salary in England = 23300 pounds = 32300 usd. So the median amazon warehouse worker makes 87% of what the median nurse makes in the U.K. Is that really so bad?

> I find it gross that..

Can you leave the mock disgust behind? You probably live in an urban/suburban area just like the rest of us, yet your lecturing us.

$14 an hour is not as bad as you think. Median nursing salary in England = 23000 pounds = 32300 usd. So the median amazon warehouse worker makes 82.5% of what the median nurse makes in the U.K. Is that really so bad?

sol_remmy··on Amazon warehouse workers 'peed in bottles' fearing punishment for taking breaks
That's because big box retailers are shipping at a loss: i ordered something from Home Depot that was $10 and got free shipping, 3-4 days too. For the same cost as the in-store item. No way is that profitable for them

They're all okay losing money in the short temp to capture online consumers

sol_remmy··on Stock and Bond Markets Dethroned: Private Fundraising Is Now Dominant
Thank goodness the government protects me, a non-accredited investor, from investing in any private companies! I'm too stupid to make investment decisions without going broke!

sol_remmy··on How warehouses for personal junk became a $38B industry
Living space cost per sq-ft has grown while storage space cost per sq-ft has stayed the same.

Why? Handicap accessibility regulations, parking regulations, etc etc have greatly increased the construction cost of new houses. i.e. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/05/19/upshot/forty-...

Storage facilities do not have people living in them and are therefore immune from lots of these expensive regulations. Hence, they are now an increasingly good deal compare to residential real estate.

> I share the cost of a police chief with 2.7 million people and you share it with 50,000.

And you wonder why people feel helpless to control the endemic corruption within the Chicago urban limits..

sol_remmy··on Illinois pension benefits have grown six times faster than state revenues
Why do you consider people from Chicago moving to the South "refugees"? They are moving for better weather, lower taxes, and more jobs. Those are very normal reasons, not "refugee" reasons.

Moving to the South is not a lower-class Chicago specific thing, in fact wealthy Jews are moving from New York to Florida. Are they refugees too?

sol_remmy··on Illinois pension benefits have grown six times faster than state revenues
The simple fact is that Chicago does not have enough bedrooms to house all the people working in the city.

SOMEONE has to live in the suburbs

sol_remmy··on Illinois pension benefits have grown six times faster than state revenues
If poor South American families can afford to sneak into the U.S., than 99.9% of Americans can afford to move to a neighboring state.

Or, why don't you give me a counterexample of someone who "can't afford to leave". A news story would be acceptable.

sol_remmy··on Illinois pension benefits have grown six times faster than state revenues
> If everyone that disagrees with a government leaves, it almost ensures that government will stay the same. The only voters left are the ones who don't have a problem with the current administration.

Your flat out wrong. If enough taxpayers leave, then government will not have the money to continue spending and stay the same

The Soviet Union essentially fell apart because it ran out of money. If it had unlimited taxpayer funds, it would still be around

sol_remmy··on Illinois pension benefits have grown six times faster than state revenues
Because America is 400m people not 10m people like Sweden, not a homogenous population, etc.

Its more accurate to compare America to the EU than to one wealthy EU member state (Sweden)

sol_remmy··on Illinois pension benefits have grown six times faster than state revenues
Doesn't matter if there is a "legal obligation" or not, if the state does not have money to pay then the money will not be paid.

sol_remmy··on Talent, luck and success: simulating meritocracy and inequality
> I don't think your definition of inequality, which basically equals popularity, is a useful one. The article is about income inequality.

My definition is perfect. High popularity -> high income -> inequality. If you bandwagon onto a popular author like J.K. Rowling, then you are further enriching her and causing inequality.

If you want to legislate away inequality for say, Twitch streamers, then pass a law that no Twitch streamer can have more than 500 views. Or authors who have sold >100,000 books can no longer sell books.
