sodapopcan··on Vim 9.2
XDG was added somewhat quietly almost two years ago now. It was announced on www.vim.org but that was it as far as I know. They don't keep news that far back but here's the commit: https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/c9df1fb35
sodapopcan··on Vim 9.2
Oh right... doi. Thanks.
sodapopcan··on Vim 9.2
Bram started giving 100% after getting hired full time by Google, I believe, which continued on. There is an update on the Vim homepage now about it stopping, though I find the wording a bit confusing... I think they are dissolving the charity but still sending donations to Uganda? I feel a bit dumb for not understanding it but you can read the update on https://www.vim.org/. Unfortunately they don't have target links for dates, it's the [2025-10-28] update.

There is also Learn VimScript the Hard Way, which is of course a bit outdated, but it does help to know "legacy" vimscript. vim9script is very intuitive and easy to learn for anyone who knows any OO language from the past 30 years. The difficulty comes in learning the ins and outs of Vim itself (when it comes to scripting it, that is).

I don't think that will ever happen. They have already diverged in key ways. I'm more than happy with vim9 and where it is going, personally.
sodapopcan··on Vim 9.2
I love vim9script and write most of my plugins in it now unless I want something to work in the other vim as well, of course. Really happy to see it evolving and I'm particularly happy that tuple support has landed!
sodapopcan··on AI agent opens a PR write a blogpost to shames the maintainer who closes it
I don't think he thinks it's sentient, just... ugh... I don't know. I hate this, lol. But I'll get over it.
sodapopcan··on AI agent opens a PR write a blogpost to shames the maintainer who closes it
Ya, this left me with a really awful feeling. I didn't read them all but it's crazy that the on maintained @'ed it and wrote an incredibly detailed response. Apparently people really want this future. It feels very dystopian and makes me semi-happy I'm getting old.
sodapopcan··on Another GitHub outage in the same day
But even clicking around tabs and whatnot is noticeably slower. It used to be incredibly snappy.
sodapopcan··on Another GitHub outage in the same day
Ya, it really was one of the most enjoyable web apps to use pre-MS. I'm sure there are lots of things that have contributed to this downfall. We certainly didn't need bullshit features like achievements.
sodapopcan··on In the AI gold rush, tech firms are embracing 72-hour weeks
Because they'll figure it out eventually. While I can't predict the future, I think it's naive to think that as all this catches on and becomes more commonplace that those of us that still have jobs won't be expected to work the same hours with much greater output. So I'd say enjoy it for now as it might not last. Like, computers in general were supposed to do this for us ~30 years ago.
sodapopcan··on Al Lowe on model trains, funny deaths and working with Disney
Sure doesn't! Was just a funny thought (depending on your definition of funny, of course).
sodapopcan··on Al Lowe on model trains, funny deaths and working with Disney
Ya, I was wondering if this made it to the top because people though "Al" was "AI," heh.
sodapopcan··on A new bill in New York would require disclaimers on AI-generated news content
I just came across this for the first time. I ordered a precision screw driver kit and it came with a cancer warning on it. I was really taken aback and then learned about this.
sodapopcan··on I miss thinking hard
This keeps coming up again and again and again, but like how many times were you able to copy paste SO solution wholesale and just have it work? Other than for THE most simple cases (usually CSS) there would always have to be some understanding involved. Of course you don't always learn deeply every time, but the whole "copy paste off of stackoverflow" was always an exaggeration that is being used in seeming earnest.
sodapopcan··on I miss thinking hard
Ya, they are programming languages after all. Language is really powerful when you really how to use it. Some of us are more comfortable with the natural variety, some of us are more comfy with code ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
sodapopcan··on Film students who can no longer sit through films
I'm actually a bit worried that I am not getting some texts in general so need to investigate that. But that's a good question... so far I have gotten no spam texts but ya. Good question! I'll report back if I figure it out.
sodapopcan··on Surely the crash of the US economy has to be soon
Fair! I clearly didn't check my spelling so I'm not one to talk!
sodapopcan··on Film students who can no longer sit through films
I'm just about one month into a flip phone. I still spend way too much time on my laptop when I'm home (and I'm home a lot) but I'm not missing my iPhone at all. When I am out, though, it's nice not having the option to look at the internet. Instead I pet my dog, talk to people, or just look around and think like I used to all those years ago.
sodapopcan··on AI Tribalism
Fair enough! Though my wholesale copy/paste point still stands.
sodapopcan··on Surely the crash of the US economy has to be soon
> The end of 2026

Seems you didn't check you calendar hard enough ;)

sodapopcan··on Where I'm at with AI
Ya, I think "it's not being discussed enough" is a veiled way to say: "I can't believe so people are ok with this shit."
sodapopcan··on Will AIs take all our jobs and end human history, or not? (2023)
For those not living terminally online, yes.
sodapopcan··on AI code and software craft
As someone who resists agents, I agree with all of this 100%, especially that it's not said enough, because this is exactly what I've railed against most of my career. There is a HUGE "LOL all code sucks" sentiment across the majority of our industry and I friggin' hate it.
sodapopcan··on Television is 100 years old today
Definitely good stuff on YouTube, but I do miss the curation and, as was talked about here recently I believe, shared experiences that brought. I'm also crazy addicted to YouTube in a way that I wasn't to TV, but that's another issue.
sodapopcan··on AI Tribalism
...from answers that were publicly shared without license. It's not the same thing, even though every LOVES to make this argument.

Also: Over the past 20 years, I could count the number of times on one hand that I was been able to get away with out-right copy/paste from SO.

sodapopcan··on Bye Bye Gmail
> I will need to keep my address alive and forwarding to my new address at least for a few years. So no privacy gains there either.

Ya, there's no way of not letting google know what your new address is, but you're going to be emailing a lot of gmail addresses anyway so there's no way around that, really. But with the forwarding they only know incoming mail.

I switched off gmail 3.5 years ago and all I can say is that it wasn't anywhere near as scary as I thought it would be. I setup an auto-responder that would hound people to update their contacts for me and slowly switched over services I cared about (and closed others!) An important point, though, is that I don't really care about old emails. I do still have access to my gmail account, of course, but I have yet to go back. Surely there is a way to export everything and import it into something searchable, though?

sodapopcan··on Bye Bye Gmail
It would have been nicer if this was about a general Google boycott in general, but this will do too.
sodapopcan··on You can't pay me to prompt
I could if there were a wealth of companies that offered it ;) Not only that, if there was a wealth of people who wanted to do it. It's unsurprising that most people are more willing to collaborate with a machine than a human (if they are even willing at all), but there's obviously nothing I can do about that.

> I do agree that real people sharing is absolutely crucial, and that AI may have a negative effect it it becomes the main and only way of (non) sharing.

Yes, exactly. Most of the pro-AI articles that show up here are about generative AI which is what the vast majority of people are raging against. This particular nuance is often left out. Although the TFA's About page explicitly states that when they use "AI" they mean "Generative AI." Obviously pretty much all of us having been using "AI" in some form or another for the past 20... 30+ years?

But then there are a whole host of other reasons I don't like "AI" that are a little out of scope of this rant.

sodapopcan··on You can't pay me to prompt
It's all situational, I guess. For example I never learned or collaborated more (or had more fun at work) than when I worked at an XP shop, pairing every single day. I feel the majority of people are just going to have coworkers who have fully stopped asking asking questions. But you aren't wrong. I use AI a bit as a search engine.
