soci··on Body Doubling
Body doubling might help on not getting up from the chair while working on a computer. However, not having someone watching over my screen -which I’d rather not do for obvious reasons- allows me for infinite procrastination. For other kind of tasks like studying, writing on paper, or doing phone calls, I agree body doubling does the trick.
soci··on Show HN: Bike – macOS Native Outliner
I've been refraining myself to upgrade to MacOSX 11 in order to not mess with my dev environment. Are you planning to release it for MaxOSX 10.14 or lower?
soci··on Apple, Google, and Microsoft commit to expanded support for FIDO standard
As far as I understood, FIDO pretends to change the login/password security model to one based in biometrical data like fingerprint or faceid. But, didn’t we all agree that “biometrical data is a login and not a password”? How can FIDO be more secure than different passwords per website or service?
soci··on Apple M1 Ultra Meanings and Consequences
My late 2009 27” iMac can be used as a monitor by connecting a laptop to the minidp port. I doubt this is still possible in newer Macs after 2015.

soci··on Tell HN: Steal idea for product to automate reporting of barking dogs complaints
I specially like the idea that this improves the quality of living for humans but also the dogs. I'm not a dog owner but I've seen many dogs being left alone and barking in the wrong places for the "wrong" reasons.

soci··on Don't Provide Your References to a Recruiter Until After Your Last Interview
I ran small recruitment agency for one year long (never again! terrible sharks industry). During that time I saw many non-ethical tactics used by other agencies. Some recruiters would do what you explain for one of the the following reasons:

a) to blackmail the company in the likes of “I won’t touch your employees if you recruit using my services from now on”.

b) already had a signed agreement with your employeer which didn’t allow the recruitment agency to “touch” any of its employees. You seemed like a match for their new client and the recruiter was checking if your employer agreement was still valid. Of course, this is also seen as blackmail by companies.

soci··on Ask HN: Where do Adult Websites advertise tech roles?
Many adult websites operate as a company with a completely different commercial name. I guess this is for legal reasons. I found that finding what company operates each websites (or website network) is extremely difficult.

Some job boards do the work for you by automatically classifying companies by industry. e.g. try filtering by "adult" at JobFluent job board. e.g for Barcelona: https://www.jobfluent.com/jobs-barcelona/adult

However, the same problem applies the other way around. Getting to know what adult websites operate each company is also a problem on its own...

soci··on How I didn't become a SoundClouder
> In the evening, I finally received a response from the recruiter. She was on the sick leave without knowing any details about the situation. She forwarded me to her manager.

It's very likely the recruiter was laid off too.

soci··on Ten Weeks with Y Combinator’s Startup School
We went through Startup School program too [^1]. From what I read in your post, it seems every mentor had its own way of conducting the Office Hours. For example, we didn't have the feedback loop on how the office hours went you mention.

Ian, our mentor, went through every project and asked questions that made us make great progress. In our company's case, we went from Idea to MVP, then to Product and Launch in 10 weeks (thanks Ian!).

Also, Office Hours are great because it gives you the accountability needed to push forward every week.

One thing I noticed is how sharp in timing the Office Hours were. They were 1 hour length mostly all of the times. Same with Startup School lecture videos which consistently were around 50min long.

Is this sharp control over timing something in American culture? As an European I find surprising how you guys make things last the exact amount of time you want even when you don't control the input (like in office hours where 10 startups have to show their progress)

soci··on Startup School 2017 Presentations
Wow! I don't have a VR set yet but this looks very, very interesting.

I can imagine people competing against each other in short regattas from their homes. Or myself just practicing & trying a new boat.

soci··on Startup School 2017 Presentations
First, thank you for your question. You are not the only one with the same doubt. Probably it means we need to craft a better definition for TechLeaks.org

The difference between Glassdoor and TechLeaks is that Glassdoor reviews are broad and targeted to all kind of audiences. There's a lot of noise from sales, marketing and other departents making reviews and there's no specific info relevant to software engineering.

Techleaks is different than glassdoor because it just targets software engineers. The reviews hosted in TechLeaks are related to questions software engineers always ask in their job interviews. For example:

What is the Agile maturity in the project? Can you choose the computer flavour? Do you get free tickets for dev conferences? What's the level of CD/CI ?

soci··on Startup School 2017 Presentations
During Startup School we built TechLeaks.org, a Glassdoor for Software Engineers (https://www.startupschool.org/presentations/511).

We went from idea to growth in just 10 weeks and I seriously doubt this could have been possible without the accountability required at the weekly office hours.

Thank you Ian (our mentor) and to the rest of mates in our group-45 cohort.

The best is yet to come. Good luck everybody!

soci··on Ask HN: What are the Madrid and Barcelona tech scenes like?
In my company we aggregate ALL public job listing in Tech companies in Barcelona & Madrid so I have some real data to share:

Barcelona doubles Madrid in number of Tech Companies currently hiring:

- Barcelona -> 299 startups offering 776 jobs

- Madrid -> 157 startups offering 359 jobs

As for language:

- Barcelona -> 90% of the job offers are written in English rest in Spanish. This could mean that English is more or less a required language for all the jobs in Barcelona

- Madrid -> 50% of the offers are written in English, the other half in Spanish.

About salaries, making a quick SQL query in the job offers database shows that Barcelona pays 15% more than Madrid as average. Although I would say that Top companies in Barcelona and Madrid are paying the same.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you need further information, we have lots of data to share.

[Update] data shared comes from https://www.jobfluent.com/jobs-barcelona (Barcelona) and https://www.jobfluent.com/jobs-madrid (Madrid)

soci··on An Important Message About Yahoo User Security
a) Can you point to an article were I can learn more about examples of big US corps being attacked by US sponsored actors?

It's a quite interesting topic indeed.

soci··on An Important Message About Yahoo User Security
Wait, Yahoo believes the data was stolen by a "state-sponsored actor"!

If they have such evidence, why don't they explain so? To me it looks like a tactic to put the focus on the "noughty" government instead of themselves.

Anyway, it will be an interesting read (if ever written) how Yahoo discovered they had been stolen and by who (what state?).

Also, if "the state" is finally behind this, who will they prosecute till death? I bet it's the hacker :(

soci··on We Don’t Simply Get Remote Jobs, We Join Remote Teams
This has happened to me as an employee at my previous job;

People living far from office location were allowed to always remote work. However team members living in the same town needed a really good excuse to actually be able to do remote.

Why giving excuses?

I really think that for some types of work, for which you might have been hired for, being at the same office is important. Remote work is not easy nor for everyone and being able to work with remote team members neither it is. The easiest path is to have everyone at the office unless it's physically important to have someone you have in your team there.

soci··on Victory for Net Neutrality in Europe
> Note that the law is very clear that this only is allowed "provided that equivalent categories of traffic are treated equally."

They can, for instance, slow down P2P traffic. What do you think about that?

soci··on Victory for Net Neutrality in Europe
As always, devil is in the details.

If you look at the fine print in the published "Guidelines for implementing Net Neutratily" [1] linked in the article you will see that there are 3 exceptions to the rule (a,b,c). Being "c" the one that should fear us most:

EXCEPTIONS

  a) "comply with Union legislative acts (...)
-> meaning that a court order can change Net Neutrality, hmmm ok.

  b) preserve the integrity and security of the network, of services provided via that network, and of the terminal equipment of end-users;
-> meaning that in order to guarantee the security of the network Net Neutrality may be avoided. I'm so-so on this one.

  c) prevent impending network congestion and mitigate the effects of exceptional or temporary network congestion, provided that equivalent categories of traffic are treated equally.
-> Meaning that ISPs can throttle specific categories of traffic at their own will.

This last one ruins the whole law. And this is not what me as European wanted. ISPs won :(

soci··on Superblocks: how Barcelona is taking city streets back from cars
As a Barcelona citizen I can not agree more on your comment. Cerdà blocks are much better than regular square corners, as a pederestian those "dead spaces" are a pleasure to walk, and as a driver makes crossroads much safer.
soci··on Mammalian diving reflex
The catalan Aleix Segura is the current static apnea World Champion. He won the title last June in a competition in Belgrad with an astonishing apnea time of 10min 07sec

A month ago he went for the pure show and broke the Guiness Record by using pure oxygen. Breathold time: 24min 03sec.

A video of that perfomance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L89kY5ewgqU

For an apnea aficionado like me it's a pleasure listening Aleix talk about trainings, chemistry, physics or dietetics. A shame he has not made any talks for the great public because this guy has a lot information to share. Is quite strange that no general media has ever approached him yet. At least not as far as I know.
