I work on cloud-based, distributed systems and have very strong opinions about ops. But my opinions are, of course, only mine.

Academic work, including for undergrad classes, is often owned by the institution you are enrolled at. Presumably, they already own the IP.

I don’t think this was (is? I don’t follow it too closely) the use case for Redis.
snotrockets··on US judge throws out FTC's ban on non-compete agreements
A garden leave isn't a non-compete, as you are employed during that time, even if your job is doing nothing.

Techincally, garden leaves are longer, mandatory termination period, not banned under the FTC rules.

That trend has changed: CA now has a slight incoming migration, like it used to.

And yes, it's more expensive. But that's the price you pay for reaping the benefits of living in CA.

snotrockets··on Ask HN: Do we need to pay billions in fees to Stripe, Block, PayPal and Visa/MC?
Or how many different rails and protocols there are, and how many of those you need to support if you actually want to serve most customers.

You also need it for cash, but there fraud takes different form, and need different mitigations.

You're wrong on all accounts here:

1. Banks are also allowed to charge fees for SEPA transfers, with some limitations.

2. It does care about currencies, in that it only supports one: the E stands for Euro, and all SEPA transfers, in the four rails it provides, are in Euros, including transfers from and to countries that are not in the euro zone.

3. And SEPA isn't limited to the European Union, as it has 36 states participating in the scheme, more than the EU's 27.

snotrockets··on Developers can soon offer in‑app NFC transactions using the Secure Element
From the press release:

> To incorporate this new solution in their iPhone apps, developers will need to enter into a commercial agreement with Apple, request the NFC and SE entitlement, and pay the associated fees.

It's for the benefit of the restaurant, because it given them the opportunity to disown the responsibility to their workers compensation.

The estimates we have suggests that wage theft by retail employers is greater than retail shrink, so your theory lacks data to back it up.
snotrockets··on Boeing Starliner could brick ISS docking port if crew abandons it
A company is beholden to its shareholders. That the shareholder wants to make profits and funnel them to some other goal, is the same for non shareholders if they’d hoard that money like a dragon.

If it’s for public benefit, than let the public decide what the benefit be.

You are no longer dependent on the whims of a private company and its shareholders, but bring in the regulatory regime of public service. Also reduce costs as unlike private enterprise, public service need not provide fiscal revenues.

Putting people in jail shouldn’t be an end goal. There are two reasons to jail a person: 1. Prohibit them from causing further harm. 2. Revenge.

The latter, I hope were better than that. And to prohibit the possible offenders here, no need to jail them. Just forbid them from serving in capacity that can cause such harm: bar them from serving in executive or decision making role.

snotrockets··on The real "Wolf of Wall Street" sales script
No it ain’t: recruiting is sales. You’re selling a candidate on the job, and your employer the candidate.
snotrockets··on GitButler is now fair source
If the intent is to ban any commercial use (without acquiring a separate license), it’s dishonest not to say so outright instead of hiding behind legalese.
snotrockets··on GitButler is now fair source
IANAL, but on a cursory read, this seems like a minefiled for use in a commercial settings: the definition of "Competing Use" in the license (https://github.com/getsentry/fsl.software/blob/main/FSL-1.1-...) can be read very broadly.

(I'd rather not discuss the tension described and am going to be vauge on purpose, as I work on SaaS that has multiple completing services from other providers)

Some SaaS, when operated by a vendor also selling IaaS, is sold at so low cost over the IaaS, that it doesn't matter how cheaply other vendors can build on top of that same IaaS, they could never compete on price.

You erroneously inserted the word “will” into the above comment.
snotrockets··on Twitter kills its San Francisco headquarters, will relocate to South Bay
People want (wanted?) to live and work there, because not everyone wants to live in suburbia, and enough employers want (wanted?) to attract those people.

Before my employer made the adult decision to go remote only, it opened an SF office in additional to the peninsula one, because some people (like myself) wouldn’t commute to Palo Alto.

That was also true in mission bay, is true in Lakeshore, and I assume other neighborhoods too.

It shouldn’t be like that, but those are the priorities we (as society and electorate) decided on.

snotrockets··on How to Get Remote Code Execution in Kafka UI
Apache projects carry with them reputation of the ASF itself, not just in regard to software quality, but also in regard to governance. The desire to not have projects that aren’t beholden to those standards being mistaken as one who do makes perfect sense, as is the case here: the headline made me thought Apache Kafka and its PMC were at fault.
snotrockets··on How to Get Remote Code Execution in Kafka UI
To avoid confusion: all the described issues aren’t with Apache Kafka, but a separate piece of software called “Kafka UI” that is a separate software to Apache Kafka, and isn’t maintained or distributed with it.

Problem is that many do.

Doing it right requires very capable individuals and a significant effort. Less than it used to take, more than most companies are ready to invest.

That’s a lie we tell children so they think the world is fair.

A Marxist reading would suggest alienation, but a more modern one would realize that it is a bit more than that: to enable modern business practices (both good and bad!) we designed systems of management to remove or reduce trust and accountability in the org, yet maintain as similar results to a world that is more in line with the one you believe is possible.

A security professional though would tell you that even in such a world, you can not expect even the most diligent folks to be able to identify all risks (e.g. phishing became so good, even professionals can’t always discern the real from fake), or practice perfect opsec (which probably requires one to be a psychopath).
