snordgren··on Japan’s business owners can’t find successors – one man is giving his away
It's hard work, but if you come at 18 you're missing 11-12 years of employer-relevant schooling compared to your local peers, and your parents aren't there to encourage you to value education.

Refugees are at a disadvantage in terms of employability, capital, and in academic capital, while the European labor market has high unemployment, few low-skilled jobs, and high educational demands on most jobs.

They may be driven, but the deck is stacked against them, which is why we aren't seeing more impressive outcomes for these groups.

snordgren··on What happens when babies are left to cry it out?
The article also quoted one researcher who said that if the baby was crying for more than 5 minutes, then it is probably not yet at a stage of development where it can learn to self-soothe. I think that is a good rule of thumb.
snordgren··on Avoid exception throwing in performance-sensitive code
Unchecked exceptions need extra care. I've seen process level exceptions being logged when the underlying cause was a failure to parse an integer. The exception was being caught in an exception handler half a dozen scopes away.
snordgren··on What happened to the first cryogenically frozen humans?
Despite the tragedy in Ukraine, most people in most countries are living through an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity.

Since 1950, the global population has more than tripled, while militaries have shrunk. Since 1960, military spending as a share of global GDP has gone down from over 6% to less than 3%.

The world isn't perfect, but it has become a lot less warlike and more hospitable for nerds in recent decades.

snordgren··on Request for Startups: Climate Tech
Considering what a terrible year this has been for Tesla stock and their absentee CEO it would be more fitting in 2021.

The brand has enough baggage by now that the second-highest comment chain is about its unsuitability as an ideal, rather than discussing the content itself.

snordgren··on Native Reflection in Rust
Rust has very little influence from reflection-heavy languages like Java and C#. On their list of influences (https://doc.rust-lang.org/reference/influences.html), Java is not even mentioned, and C# is only mentioned for its attributes. There is very little overlap between the design philosophies that influenced Rust and Java/C#.

Ruts does not support inheritance either. But I have never missed either feature in a Rust program.

snordgren··on Who knew the first AI battles would be fought by artists?
Where do you find meaning in life today? What do you do on weekends and vacations?

Another place to look is the financially independent. What are they doing with their time?
