snicky··on Ask HN: Is anyone aware of a LinkedIn mirror like xcancel.com for X?
And it feels like half of the world's compute is wasted on those self-indulgent cringe posts now.
snicky··on RevisionDojo, a YC startup, is running astroturfing campaigns targeting kids?
Semi-related opinion, but it really boggles me how people can be such a*holes to leave spam all over the internet and keep turning it into a cesspit. If a company does it in such an obvious way it has to be systematic, meaning that someone somewhere comes up with an idea, his manager gives an okay to proceed and then they chop it into tasks and other employees pick them up. There are multiple people involved. All of them know about what's happening and that it's unethical. And for what? I doubt most people running/working for the YC companies need money that badly. Are they going to buy a boat? A higher Tesla model? Invite their friends to Michelin-starred restaurants to show how successful they are?
snicky··on Why didn't AI “join the workforce” in 2025?
Back in my days this was called "trolling".

Hi, I'm Mariusz. I have 14 years of experience building scalable apps using Ruby on Rails with startups from US, Canada, Europe, Australia and Taiwan. Most recently, I've been a part of a hybrid team working on a content creators platform at Playboy. I'm interested in both tech lead and senior/staff level individual contributor roles alike and I'm open to work with other tech stacks too, e.g. Elixir, Golang, C, Node.js or help out with ML integrations.
snicky··on Ask HN: What skills do you want to develop or improve in 2026?
I'm in the same boat regarding the CS education and the desire to learn C. I find the videos recorded by Antirez (the creator of Redis) that make up something you could call a C course quite interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjXBXBgfKyk&list=PLrEMgOSrS_... . He starts from the basics, but the pace is good and he quickly gets to nitty and gritty. The videos are in Italian, though the automated translations do the job. I think he releases one episode a week.

snicky··on Why 90s Movies Feel More Alive Than Anything on Netflix
> The Netflix catalog is full of not so good movies, and the video rental shops in the 90s were too.

I subscribed to Netflix for a year or two when the platform became popular, but I quickly realized it resembles those old school rental shops too much. Yes, you could get some popular classics like The Godfather or Goodfellas, but apart from that you were stuck with another crime story or a comedy with Steve Martin or John Candy. Actually, my analogy may not be 100% fortunate, because I still have good memories about watching these comedies as a kid with my dad. Now I wouldn't have time and patience to go through movies of "that" quality. Anyhow, my point is that you were very unlikely to get there anything that wasn't already proved to be popular. Forget about anything more niche / arthouse. Netflix has produced plenty by itself, but how many of those movies are actually any good? I remember a handful of them: Marriage Story, Roma, Don't Look Up and a movie for kids called Okja.

snicky··on Board: New game console recognizes physical pieces, with an open SDK
Pretty cool! Did you think about a way to handle games that need some secret elements (e.g. cards with roles/resources) that should be kept away from other players?
snicky··on Ask HN: Is Hacker News a good place to find a job in tech?
I've been hired 3 times after replying to "who is hiring" posts in the past which resulted in 8 years of employment total. Recently, I've been contacted by a couple of interesting startups after posting to "who wants to be hired" threads. I'd say it's still pretty good and definitely way better than other public channels.
snicky··on Ask HN: Abandoned/dead projects you think died before their time and why?
This post reminded me about the good time I had watching Salad Fingers and Happy Tree Friends. "Na, na, nanana na".

snicky··on Why do we remember some life moments but not others?
I think that's simply because you ARE a good person. You could as well dislike someone without even remembering what happened.
snicky··on Why do we remember some life moments but not others?
It's also scientifically proven that every time you recall a memory you change it. In other words - your further experience can affect the memory of past events.
snicky··on ChatGPT Pulse
How is the current state of affairs different from 8 years ago? I don't want to argue, just a genuine question, because I don't follow much what's happening in the blockchain universum.
snicky··on Ask HN: What Is Your Hobby?
After work I prefer mostly less demanding activities: reading books, playing games, learning from video courses or doing whatever sport is available in the current space-time: riding a bike or a longboard, working out, running, diving, swimming, etc.

Are hobbies in decline ... ? Well, they could be if everyone uses most of their brain cycles "consuming content" online. It is quite absorbing and may result in less interest in hobbies that require higher attention.

snicky··on consumed.today
Wow, this diet looks very healthy, but on some days the calorie intake seems very low.
snicky··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
> Interesting, there are plenty of localities in the US that hire 5-10yoe developers at south of $100k.

I don't doubt there may be people who would be fine with that, but I guess no one who values their own skills would go for it if there are plenty of East/West Coast companies hiring remotely.

> Is there a good resource for data on wages in Poland? I mean, I am going to look, but I thought I'd ask.

I think you can start from looking at the local job offers, e.g. https://justjoin.it. Just remember there are a couple of nuances:

- most developers in Poland don't want to be FTEs, because the tax burden on that type of employment is at least 2 times higher than on B2B contracts; effectively, we ended up having a market where everyone is hired B2B, but with all the usual FT benefits (paid vacations and sick days, equipment, private insurance, gym memberships, free food and whatnot) - it's sort of a gray area, but the related law is not really enforced; thus as a foreign company you compete with the local B2B rates + benefits

- people are aware that US is a different market generating more revenue

- the work-life balance may be quite different, so they expect to be paid accordingly

- Warsaw is generally more expensive than other cities in Poland, so you don't need to limit yourself to one city in your search, the same way as you wouldn't hire remote developers from the Bay Area only

- there's a reason these offers are hanging in there :)

Edit: formatting.

snicky··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
Of course it all depends on who are we actually talking about. I think talented seniors with 5-10yoe and proper communication skills expect North of $150k.
snicky··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
I don't know much about the other cities you mentioned, but there's no way you could get top developers from Warsaw for $50-60k in 2025. You may be hard pressed to find them even if you 2x that. As a point of reference, a nice family apartment costs around $1M here now. Times they are a-changin.
snicky··on This map is not upside down
Funny. I come from Poland and for us the East/West dichotomy always made sense: the West = Western Europe and US (think richer, more organized, pleasant to visit) vs the East = remains of USSR (poorer, corrupted, wild), the "proper Asian East" behind it and the most exotic "Far East" at the very end. Not very politically correct, but this was a cognitive construct most of us here had in their minds, at least until this decade.

snicky··on Google Maps Reviews in Germany Are Basically Dead
This year I tend to ignore restaurants with rates lower than 4.7 as this usually means they are not really worth the money. I do the same evaluating places to stay on booking.com. If it's an apartment it has to be at least 9.5 and have more than 50 reviews. Otherwise the reviews could be just all fake. Good hotels usually start around 9.0 (I think people have higher expectations against hotels in general thus lower ratings).

I have to say re-building those internal scales takes a couple of brain cycles in my head every now and then, but I'm already used to those skewed ratings after checking IMDb reviews for years and learning that anything below 7.2 is a total crap and the rating above 8.0 usually marks a masterpiece.

snicky··on iPhone 16 cameras vs. traditional digital cameras
This applies only if you assume that you are not willing to spend more on a phone with a better camera and a lot of people do. I have friends who decided to buy an iPhone over way cheaper Android phones in the past, because "the iPhone camera was so much better". Funny enough, the differences were obviously negligible when compared with any actual camera.
