sneed_chucker··on The Rise and Fall of Homework Help Sites: Discussion on AI's Role in Education
It seems like you're just trying to get people to check out your homework helper app.

In the future you should just transparently post this as a "Show HN".

sneed_chucker··on What's New in POSIX 2024
Strict adherence to POSIX isn't a goal of any of the current BSDs is it?
sneed_chucker··on Tesla's Cybertruck is outselling almost every other EV in the US
I don't even like cybertrucks or Teslas, but Jesus could you be any more sour grapes about this?
sneed_chucker··on Pretty.c
Creating DSLs within C has a long tradition.

Stephen Bourne wanted to write his shell in ALGOL so badly that he relentlessly beat C with its own preprocessor until it began to resemble his preferred language.

sneed_chucker··on System76 Thelio Astra: High-End ARM64 Developer Desktop
Literally any recently made desktop machine with a 64 core processor and 32 GB of ECC RAM will cost that much.

Look up what other workstations with similar specs cost, this is normal pricing.

sneed_chucker··on Standing desks may be bad for your health, study suggests
I got one, not because I wanted to stand (which I do from time to time), but because full height adjustability is so convenient.
sneed_chucker··on Life expectancy rise in rich countries slows down: took 30 years to prove
Did we expect it to grow forever?
sneed_chucker··on FreeBSD: How Can We Make It More Attractive to New Users?
Drop in support for docker would be a big one.
sneed_chucker··on Cognizant found guilty of discriminating against non-Indian employees
"When you do it, it's racism. When we do it, it's vibes."
sneed_chucker··on Is the attack helicopter dead?
Part of a broader pattern in military technology right now.

All weapon systems that consist of an expensive vehicle and an expensive-to-train crew are being re-evaluated against drones right now.

If you're fighting a highly asymmetric conflict where your enemies can barely touch your expensive toys then it's less of a concern.

If you're fighting near-peer it's a different story.

sneed_chucker··on We'll buy back your Typewriter for Uncle Sam
> Given what they fought against

Mass murder of civilians isn't morally acceptable no matter what the "other side" is doing.

Firebombing a kindergarten in the Rheinland doesn't do anything to help someone in an extermination camp in occupied Poland.

Post war analysis of allied strategic bombing indicates that it did not have a large impact on the war effort and probably wasn't worth the high rate of loss of the expensive airframes and crews.

sneed_chucker··on Google won't be mandating a strict return-to-office plan
Maybe, maybe not. Amazon has always been the most employee-hostile of the big tech companies. Google and especially FB/Meta have historically poached a lot of engineers away from them just by being more competitive with comp and benefits.
sneed_chucker··on Only Use Old Computers
Does anyone know what happened to Luke Smith? His website and YouTube channel haven't been updated in over a year.

Has he gone full Orthodox monk and withdrawn from the modern world to some monastery up in the mountains in Serbia?

sneed_chucker··on Is the Shoplifting "Crisis" Over?
"X has always been a sign of Y"

Pretty arbitrary assertion.

Maybe shoplifting is a sign of what you say it is.

Could also be a sign of breakdown in law and order because property crime is increasingly ignored, and so people do it because they know they won't get punished.

sneed_chucker··on Students Paid Thousands for a Caltech Boot Camp. Caltech Didn't Teach It
Well at least for those CEFR and TOEFL exist.
sneed_chucker··on Students paid thousands for a Caltech boot camp that Caltech didn't teach
Some are good, some aren't. The problem is, a Bootcamp student can't tell the difference and there's nothing like an accreditation system for them so it's full on market for lemons[1].

sneed_chucker··on 91% of polled Amazon staff unhappy with RTO, 3-in-4 want to jump ship
I think there's an element of truth to what you're saying, but there's also lots of work avoidance in office as well.
sneed_chucker··on Windows Server 2008 IA64 Guest on HP Integrity VM (HP-UX)
It's definitely profitable in terms of support contracts.

But make no mistake, any place that is still running these legacy systems like commercial Unix (HPUX, AIX), OpenVMS, IBM i (aka OS/400 aka System/38) or mainframes is only doing so because they have to.

sneed_chucker··on Louisiana doctors win big lawsuit against Blue Cross Blue Shield
The American healthcare industry is scammers and upsellers all the way down
sneed_chucker··on Shrinking the economy won't save the planet
Right. In the modern economy we have a bunch of pothole digging industries and a bunch of pothole filling industries, and the operation of both causes the GDP to go up.
sneed_chucker··on What the Heck Is Crab Rangoon Anyway?
From TFA:

One thing to get out of the way is that crab rangoon is not inauthentic, and you should not be embarrassed to order it. American Chinese food is its own cuisine, with its own staples and a reasonably long and fascinating history. There’s a fundamental problem with the concept of authenticity in food, because cuisine is constantly mutating and adapting to new ingredients, new people, new techniques, and new ideas. Mexican food would be completely different without the influence of the Spanish and Arab immigrants and colonists; the tomato is not native to Italy; the chili pepper is not native to Thailand. There are old dishes and there are newer dishes, and that can be an interesting distinction. And there is tasty food and lousy food, but using some concept of authenticity alone as a criterion is a flawed approach.

sneed_chucker··on The US finally takes aim at truck bloat
The US and industry lobbyists created truck bloat in the first place by writing the CAFE standards in such a backwards way.
sneed_chucker··on Ask HN: Is the Job Market That Bad?
I get recruiter and "join my startup" messages once or twice a week now, up from it being completely dead a year ago.

It's definitely still a tough market, but I don't know anyone good who was laid off and then stayed unemployed.

sneed_chucker··on Study: We Can (and Must) Teach Kids to Think Critically
"Critical Thinking" is almost always code for "have the right opinions". The article's text pretty much confirms that this is a case of that.

The world is full of critical thinkers who arrive at different conclusions.

sneed_chucker··on Tell HN: Burnout is bad to your brain, take care
Did reading the book help you? Did you seek treatment?
sneed_chucker··on What to do about America's killer cars
Strongly considered it. If only Fords were reliable.
sneed_chucker··on Essential Terminal Commands Every Developer Should Know
I'm sorry, but who is the intended audience of this post?

Is there really anyone who is messing around on the Unix command line who needs to be told about cat, head, and ls?

sneed_chucker··on Linux desktop market share climbs to 4.45%
Fedora is a good desktop and if you have Centos/RHEL experience your muscle memory can be useful.
sneed_chucker··on GM to Cut More Than 1k Software Engineers, Mostly in US
Par for the course. Have you driven a modern GM vehicle? Full of issues and borderline worthless once the warranty is up.

Really great company that the tax payer was forced to rescue.

sneed_chucker··on On the cruelty of really teaching computing science (1988)
For those who don't know, the author is Edsger W. Dijkstra
