On that last bit - pairing socks: finally threw out 50+ multi-colored pairs and bought 20 in just two colors. All get dumped into one bin after drying. Three blind pulls guarantees a matched pair. Nice timesaver.

Very nice. There's also this (copy/pasting):

If you want to try F# w/o any installation, try it in Jupyter on Azure Notebooks:

https://notebooks.azure.com/Microsoft/libraries/samples/html...

Browse w/o loggin in, or if you want to edit/run/..., sign in, click Clone, then play around.

It's all free.

Cheers.

Yep. If I had a time machine some of the first stops would include dropping off some meds for Chopin, Mozart, Schubert, Pergolesi, ...
smortaz··on Jupyter Receives the ACM Software System Award
A huge congrats from Azure Notebooks which is entirely built around Jupyter. We actually started way before that by connecting the visual studio REPL to Jupyter and the whole experience (technically and people) has been delightful.
smortaz··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2018)
Microsoft | Senior Engineers (Back End / Front End)| FULL-TIME ONSITE+REMOTE | VISA

Hi Folks - Eng lead for Python Tools teams at Microsoft. I'm looking to hire 4 devs during the next 2 months for Azure Notebooks - basically Jupyter as a Service. You can check it out at (https://notebooks.azure.com). It's a mix of C#/.Net (FE) and Linux/Docker (BE). Local (Redmond) is preferred, but exceptions can be made! Looking for both frontend and backend web devs.

Ideal candidates have 4+ years of relevant industry experience.

If interested, pls send your resume to pythonjobs@microsoft.com with the subject "AZNB".

Thanks!

smortaz··on Personalized Hey Siri
Yep, tried that too... but admittedly the sound very similar. I keep getting "I'll of dogs" and "I love dogs".
smortaz··on Personalized Hey Siri
Ah! Makes total sense now.
smortaz··on Personalized Hey Siri
On a separate note, I have yet to get Siri to transcribe "Isle of Dogs" correctly. It's always "I love dogs" which is quite ok by me :).
smortaz··on Jupyter, Mathematica, and the Future of the Research Paper
MyBinder is great. As well as cocalc and sagemath. There's also https://notebooks.azure.com which is a free hosting of Jupyter notebooks. You get a linux/docker container w a Terminal, Anaconda, etc.

Check out jakevp's book for example:

https://notebooks.azure.com/jakevdp/libraries/PythonDataScie...

Clone to run.

Also try Jupyter Lab (experimental) - closer to an IDE than plain notebooks. right click on a Library (repo) and select Open in Jupyter Lab.

smortaz··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2018)
Hi sorry about the confusion - basically it means you can work either on site at Redmond or Remote. But preference is for Redmond (all else being equal...)
smortaz··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2018)
Folks - the 2nd link for VSC (https://careers.microsoft.com/us/en/job/390321/Software-Engi...) is incorrect. Can't edit the post unfortunately.

The short job description is for a dev to work directly on the Python extension for VSC (ie Editor, Debugger, Intellisense, Data Science features, REPL, ...).

smortaz··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2018)
Microsoft | 1 Dev for VS Code | Redmond* | Full-time

Our team builds tooling for Python developers:

https://www.visualstudio.com/vs/python

https://notebooks.azure.com

https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/languages/python <<<< you'll work on this

This is a dev position for working on VS Code's Python support. VSC is cross-plat, lighter weight Editor++ (where ++ means debugging, etc.). The primary development language for VSC is TypeScript - although some parts are written in Python/.net.

If you are passionate about devtools, developer productivity, IDEs, languages, data science, ... this might be an exciting position for you!

Ideal candidate profile:

* 4+ years of JS/TS experience <<<<<

* Experience creating extensions for VS Code is a major plus

* Experience working on IDE components (Editor/Debugger/...) is a major plus

All of our work has been done in open source from day one. We have no OS or HW religion - pick win, macos, linux, lenovo, macbook, ... :)

The position is for Redmond, WA, however I'll consider exceptional candidates for remote work as well.

If interested, or have questions, please send your resume to PythonJobs@Microsoft.com with the subject line: "VSC-Python"

Thank you!

smortaz··on My Python Development Environment, 2018 Edition
Thanks pjmlp!

Just a note of clarification. There are two "visual studio"s:

https://www.visualstudio.com/vs/python/

This is the classic Visual Studio & runs on Windows only, is a full featured IDE and has goodies like mixed mode Python/C++ debugging.

https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/languages/python

This VS Code, a cross-platform Editor++ with Python support.

Both are being actively worked on and will see continuous improvements.

On behalf of Azure Notebooks team, a huge congrats to the team!

If you like to try it, pick any of your libraries, right click and select “open in JupyterLab”.

smortaz··on VS Code in Anaconda Distribution 5.1
FYI, this isn’t Visual Studio, but VS Code, with the Python support enabled. The latter is a lightweight crossplat editor++.

smortaz··on Excel team considering Python as scripting language: asking for feedback
Good point that the tooling would've been awesome. However, I don't think .net would have spawned the rich ecosystem of Python pkgs that we enjoy today. And /that/ is a huge part of the whole Python value prop. From astronomy to finance to bioinformatics to ML & everything in between, there's a pkg for that. We even did sponsored a port of numpy+scipy to .Net (via Anaconda). At the end of the day, there were just too many corner cases & too many pkgs to port for it to make sense.
smortaz··on Excel team considering Python as scripting language: asking for feedback
That's a very good point! I hope you provided that input :).

Our team provides a free service for anyone to run Jupyter Notebooks on Azure. It's currently a big hit with the Edu crowd. We're seeing lots & lots of universities upload & teach courses on it. eg:

http://notebooks.azure.com/richie

There's also an Intro to Python notebook on the front page.

Hopefully the Excel team will consider Jupyter integration, esp for the web-app version! You're right that it's a killer combo. Check out xlwing's video on using Excel+Jupyter - it's brilliant.

smortaz··on Excel team considering Python as scripting language: asking for feedback
That's for the Excel team to decide. My personal hope is that they'll offer as a base:

* Python 3

* Numpy, SciPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Altair, ...

* Pythonic bindings for Excel APIs (sheets, etc etc)

* VSCode's Python Editor + Debugger built in

* Some sort of conda based env/pkg mgmt

* Right-click, "Open in Jupyter" (data/code)

* <your wish here>

smortaz··on Excel team considering Python as scripting language: asking for feedback
Thank you - all awesome tools. Kudos to the devs behind these bridges. We did one ourselves, but better ones have come along since then:

smortaz··on Excel team considering Python as scripting language: asking for feedback
Challenges exist & will have to be looked at for sure. Incidentally, one of the guys on our team just a gave talk on his PEP for "Secure" Python:

https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0551/

There's a YT talk as well.
