sml156··on 9,096 Stars in the Sky – Is That All?
I read somewhere that in Roman times the test to become a soldier was to look at the Pleiades cluster and if you could see seven stars you would pass the eye test.

sml156··on DNS Performance compared: CloudFlare 1.1.1.1 x Google 8.8.8.8 x Quad9 x OpenDNS
I live near Toronto Canada and Rogers my ISP hijack's DNS requests for non existent domains. The data to back up my bold statement is a simple Google search which reveals that they have been doing this at the very least from my Google search was from 2008.

It is possible to turn off this feature, But it is set by a cookie and once that cookie is deleted you have to do it all over again.

sml156··on Abadoned Kola Superdeep Borehole
They stopped because it was too hot, 180 Celsius.

The rock was more like plastic than rock.

sml156··on Randomize your WiFi MAC address on Ubuntu
I am pretty sure that when iPhone connects to an access point it uses the real mac, I don't know about android but it is probably the same.

Some access points need your real mac to connect because they use that to authorize you, I think schools/universities use this method a lot.

sml156··on Stupid long route
The only thing I noticed was it took a full second

> And finally, after 178000 and change miles of data transfer, the letter I'd typed a full second ago appeared on my screen.

sml156··on Backblaze has ordered 100 petabytes of hard drives
Interesting, your considering that your setup somehow compares to Blackblaze

Also if if he says it takes about 15 Min's for it to come online and be usable in their massive data center I would believe him.

sml156··on Wild Dogs Sneeze When They Are Ready to Hunt
If I was to make a guess I would say they sneeze to clear any odors that may be trapped in their nasal passages, Or to make sure that their passages are clear to sense prey better.
sml156··on Fish are eating lots of plastic

sml156··on Crack WPA/WPA2 Wi-Fi Routers with Aircrack-Ng and Hashcat
It's called evil twin and if you thought of it more than ten years ago you would've had to write your own script.
sml156··on Ask HN: Which wireless router do you use at home?
+1 For LEDE/OpenWRT, I'm running 17.01.02 (uname -a=Linux LEDE 4.4.71 #0) I am using a TP-Link TL-WDR4300 v1 and am very happy with it so far.

I would probably be more happy with ubiquiti unifi

sml156··on Highest resolution map ever made of the Gulf of Mexico
I think it's just you , About 3/4 of the way through reading the article I was actually wondering what effect this survey would of caused to marine life that was close to what must be an incredibly loud noise to reach the seafloor and then bounce back to receivers close to the surface.

Not only can loud sounds cause deafness in humans but a loud enough sound will kill you.

sml156··on How I gained access to TMobile’s national network for free
It is a well known fact that many ISP's cache well known speed test sites.

I truly believe that the speed test sites caught on to this and changed from sending a static file to a randomly named file.

Now they probably just prioritize the speed test sites.

sml156··on Is Centuries-Old Wine Still Drinkable?
I am going to go out on a limb here and guess that at some point during the last 30 years that yes it was drinkable.
