smitop··on FTC sues Intuit for its deceptive TurboTax “free” filing campaign
They have some data on this (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p55b.pdf, pages 33-35). Out of 509,917 examinations, 18,988 resulted in a refund. There was $7.0 billion of tax refunded in 2020. For comparison, there was $17.2 billion of additional tax generated with additional recommended and unagreed amounts.
smitop··on $20 to Mint Your Prayers on “The Blockchain”
It seems you can't pay with cryptocurrencies; in order to use the pay later thing you need to be paying with a credit card. The pay later service is provided by a 3rd party, and usually they just give the full amount (minus whatever % they charge for the service) to the merchant right after the purchase.

If their attempts to charge your credit card fail then the pay later company can use the usual tactics to get you to pay loans, since they require some of your personal information when setting up the payment: sending threatening messages, adding a bad mark to your credit report, etc.

smitop··on EU countries pledge to promote OSS within public administrations [pdf]
At one point node-ipc deleted all files on the filesystem if the user had a Russian/Belarusian IP, they have since made it non-destructive (just adding a file to the desktop).
smitop··on Ask HN: Is Linus Torvalds GitHub page a scam?
It looks like the domain just expired, and got picked up by someone later to use it with some advertising service that does these redirects.
smitop··on Finality does not exist in payments
I think you're thinking about this incident? https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Value_overflow_incident

In that case, ~9 hours of transaction history were reversed because of a transaction that resulted in an overflow in the main (and I think only at the time) Bitcoin client allowing the creation of unlimited Bitcoin.

smitop··on YouTube: Due to limited creator history we're limiting the number of views
This video was archived while the issue was occuring: https://archive.fo/IMxlI
smitop··on Pay attention to WebAssembly
> garbage collection

The draft WASM garbage collection proposal is partially implemented in Chromium, you can try it by enabling the enable-experimental-webassembly-features feature flag.

> DOM access

WebAssembly will never have direct access to the DOM, but at least with Rust the wasm-bindgen+web_sys crates make interacting with the DOM as simple as it is from JavaScript.

smitop··on Google critiqued the practice of displaying ads above search results
It's from March 2002: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22109078
smitop··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
I'd guess that it's because they (incorrectly) think it's an embedded Webview, which get blocked (see https://developers.googleblog.com/2021/06/upcoming-security-... and https://developers.google.com/identity/protocols/oauth2/poli...).

You could try creating an issue in the Cloud Identity issue tracker (Cloud Identity is Google's API for letting websites have a "Login with Google" thing): https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/new?component=522910&...

smitop··on The FSF’s relationship with firmware is harmful to free software users
Here's where Purism says that the reason for the workaround is indeed for attempting to get RYF certified: https://puri.sm/posts/librem5-solving-the-first-fsf-ryf-hurd...
smitop··on Show HN: CodeCaptcha - Hide web links behind coding challenges
With just that prompt, Copilot keeps writing a comment about the function but never actually writes the function. Prompting to actually write the function by starting it with `func` gives:

// A Go function to swap the sixth bit and seventeenth bit of a 32-bit signed integer.
    func swapBits(x int32) int32 {
        return ((x & 0x0F) << 28) | ((x & 0xF0000000) >> 28)
    }
smitop··on Bitcoin mining is being banned in countries across the globe
> If 51% militantly attack the treasury and fed it won't exist either.

It is significantly harder to convince 51% of the population of something than to convince >51% of Bitcoin hashpower: the top 4 mining pools control 51% of the hashpower, so you'd really only need to convince a handful of people to execute a 51% attack.

smitop··on Quit Your Job
You need to be hand-building your CPUs. You need to stop using CPUs built by anyone else. You need to be soldering in circuitry to bootstrap an x86 environment. Making your own control unit, ALU, registers, memory, buses. You need to control your computer.
smitop··on Lawsuit filed alleging Google is paying Apple to stay out of the search business
They use Google Ads: I Googled "crane schools in california" and one of the results was an ad for California Crane School. Apparently they think that they are paying too much on those ads: "The complaint alleges that advertising rates are higher than rates would be in a competitive system".
smitop··on LastPass users warned their master passwords are compromised
For me I was able to reset my account (which removes all data) but not delete it. It appears to be an issue with their WAF blocking requests to the account deletion endpoint.
smitop··on Against 3x Speed
This is called a flipped classroom: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flipped_classroom
smitop··on To opt out of Google Analytics you have to install a browser extension
uBlock Origin includes a dummy script that emulates the real Google Analytics script: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/blob/master/src/web_access...
smitop··on Rust Moderation Team Resigns
The compiler literally checks what GitHub org originated the package. If you fork a package that uses FFI, it won't work unless you remove the check from the compiler or use a hacky workaround to trick the compiler: https://github.com/elm/compiler/blob/770071accf791e817144070...
smitop··on LLVM relicensing update and call for help
Wikipedia was licensed under GFDL 1.2 or later, so relicensed by convincing the FSF to release an updated version of the GFDL (version 1.3) that adds a very narrowly worded clause allowing relicensing that pretty much only applied to Wikipedia.
smitop··on Hackerrank DMCA Notice
GitHub's takedown notice template says otherwise: "Have you searched for any forks of the allegedly infringing files or repositories? Each fork is a distinct repository and must be identified separately if you believe it is infringing and wish to have it taken down."
smitop··on Beware of fast-math
The LLVM IR is more expressive than clang is for expressing fast-math: it supports making an operation use fast-math optimization on a per operation basis (https://llvm.org/docs/LangRef.html#fastmath).
smitop··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
BTW, you appear to be shadowbanned: many of your comments and all but one submission show as [dead] to me (although some of your comments have been vouched for, which unkills them).
smitop··on I was rejected by Codecademy three times, so I built my own
Their job applications were rejected: https://docs.codeamigo.dev/blog/why-codeamigo
smitop··on Spear phishing with Slackbot for fun and profit
Discord uses a special indicator for system messages, like the Slackbot heart but more prominent: https://smitop.com/discord-system.png
smitop··on GitHub Copilot available for JetBrains and Neovim
They would also have to exclude virtually all code that isn't public domain, too. MIT and Apache-2.0 and BSD all require that the copyright notice and license text is preserved in downstream use.
smitop··on Which jobs most often pair together among married couples
They used to be separate occupation codes, but they were merged in 2005 (https://usa.ipums.org/usa/volii/c2ssoccup.shtml). Perhaps because there weren't enough legislators to justify getting their own category, so they got lumped in with the closest other profession?
smitop··on Go 1.18 will embed source version information into binaries
It's hard to statically determine what parts of an executable affect the running of it. Many executable have timestamps in them that do affect how they run, so you can't just ignore all timestamps if you want reproducible builds. See https://reproducible-builds.org/docs/timestamps/
smitop··on Going to Work for the Tor Project
Here's the mentioned implementation of Tor in Rust: https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/core/arti
smitop··on Mastodon: AGPLv3 FOSS social network server
The FSF has a somewhat relevant answer about this: https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.en.html#StolenCopy

It depends on if the accidentally public instance could be considered a trade secret.

smitop··on Software Freedom Conservancy files GPL lawsuit against Vizio
They only need to provide the sources for the kernel, not the software running on top of the kernel. Usually they do publish the source for their kernel somewhere on their website in my experience (although they don't always provide a direct link to it on the product).
