smiler··on [dead]
Really struggling to think how the creator of this feels it would have a use
smiler··on What Happened When We Entered Every Music CD in Existence into RavenDB
You clearly didn't even bother to read the article if you are asking what database was being used.
smiler··on Ziptastic: Isn't a zipcode enough?
Also zip (postal code) information is not in the public domain in the UK. It is a commercial database which you can licence from the RoyalMail or probably a reseller.
smiler··on Facebook acquires Instagram
Why are you surprised? Most startups are built to either go IPO or exit through a buy out. Considering many startups (including Instagram) do not even come up with a profitable business model, it excludes IPO and therefore only leaves an exit as a way for investors to recoup their investment.
smiler··on SQL Injection through HTTP Headers
I guess this is one benefit of a NoSQL database...
smiler··on How it feels when everyone you know gets laid off
I think you'll find death marches, QA often neglected and "Write the code, then fix the bugs" are far more common than you think
smiler··on The dirty secret of IP calling, and how it will change the phone industry
IP calling for me is a major disappointment at the moment - I've been on far too many conference calls where people are on all manner of different VOIP ways to connect to a call - Skype, Cisco etc etc - it's low quality, tonnes of echo, missed words.

What's even worse is when you have people from another company with a different VOIP provider / technology - then it becomes a joke.

smiler··on Super Bowl Ads on Twitter: Visualizing the Buzz
It doesn't measure whether the tweet is positive v negative, which surely has a large impact.

I think the 'reach' figure is reaching as well, because I am guessing they just counted the number of followers the person who tweeted has, but of course, there is no way to know that every follower read that tweet.

smiler··on UK government declines to pardon Alan Turing
I personally don't like all these campaigns which must take up an inordinate amount of time, energy, effort and money to try and somehow right the wrongs of past governments.

I really don't get why a country 'apologises' for past actions - I don't feel any tie whatsoever to the government / laws of the time / my fellow countrymen of years gone by and why me apologising would make any difference

Let people be responsible for their own actions and decisions.

smiler··on Turn.js - The page flip effect for HTML5
Performance on IPad 1 is abysmal
smiler··on How to develop disruptive ideas
Poor tasting is subjective as well - I personally love the taste of Red Bull as do many others.
smiler··on Tesla Model S Options and Pricing
I think Tesla have already started this. At the Santana Row mall in San Jose, they have dedicated electric car charger parking spots and you will often see a couple of Tesla's parked up.
smiler··on Circumventing the No-Fly list in thirty seconds
It's more about giving people jobs I think
smiler··on UK Schools ICT to be replaced by computer science programme
At of course, the majority of a CS degree does not involve programming
smiler··on HBO to Netflix: We’re taking our ball & going home
What you really mean is - you are willing to infringe copyright law, deny a lot of creative technical people and performers income and reduce funding for future shows.

You describe yourself as a software entrepeneur - I'm assuming you want to get paid for that in some way shape or form - how would you feel if people stole / infringed what you developed and denied you revenue?

I just do not get the prevailing attitude amongst a lot of people here on HN.

smiler··on Andreessen Horowitz, Salesforce Put $1.4M In Flotype (YC W11)
Anyone know what this is built on? Is it zero mq or some other open source messaging system, or is it all proprietary?
smiler··on Poll: As a freelancer, how much do you bill per hour?
Why? I may work an 8 hour day or a 12 hour day (particularly on-site) - I would rather get paid for every hour I work.
smiler··on How to date a supermodel (or get dealflow or find cofounders)
I'm in the midlands and no I haven't. But then the midlands is not so much a 'new media' place like London / Brighton are.
smiler··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (January 2012)
SEEKING FREELANCER - England, remote only. I require a technical writer / developer who can quickly grok an application that has been written and then produce documentation showing what has been done.

- you must have excellent English

- all documentation must be Word compatible. All diagrams must be Visio compatible

- you should be available for Skype / Webex for dicussion, review etc

- app will be provided via a Vmware 8 image

- experience with manufacturing useful

Please send e-mail to address in my profile with hourly rate, website / cv, timezone, availability and as a bonus, any examples of docs you have written

smiler··on Reddit Users to Target Supporters of SOPA in Congress After GoDaddy
Often when people face opposition they (we) interpret it as 'I must be doing something right' and it only validates to them what they are doing and will make them even more determined which I think will happen in this case.

To receive opposition / criticism, you have to be a very secure person to receive it well. Considering Politicians live on the opinion of others, I doubt they handle it well.

If we're honest, all of us get into a 'me against the world' mentality about plenty of things

smiler··on VW deactivates employee email outside working hours
Where on earth do you get this idea? Please see this link http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/paye/rates-thresholds.htm

It is 13.8% for employers!

smiler··on VW deactivates employee email outside working hours
Are you saying the US has good labour laws? I think most would disagree with you
smiler··on VW deactivates employee email outside working hours
You do know employer and employee both pay NI, so total NI is around 24%
smiler··on An Indian Inventor Disrupts The Period Industry
Indeed, it is not clear if that is just for the machine which produces the napkins or for the entire production line.

Also to take in consideration is

- warehouse area to store raw materials - some kind of financial system to manage purchase orders / sales orders

21,000 napkins / hour. Let's assume there's 10 in a box, 8 boxes to a case and 30 cases in a pallet.

So that's 2400 napkins / pallet = ~ 9 pallets per hour. You're also going to need labelling, conveyors, people to pack the boxes, people to pack the cases, people to stack the pallets and then a few fork lifts to move the pallets plus of course engineering staff to maintain all this.

So it's not really small machine v big machine, it's small machine v production line which adds a lot of complexity.

smiler··on I’m too lazy to be a HTML developer
This is so true - for the past 5 years I've been working on web apps, but this year most of my time was spent working on a java server / client with the client being a web start applet.

It has been so pleasurable to not have to worry about HTML / JS - if I want a dialog box, I can have one very simply with no messing about.

smiler··on Online payment options for SaaS (includes those supported in UK)
Yes, Google checkout is available to UK merchants. Fees are only 3.4% + £0.20 which seems far better than what FastSpring are offering
smiler··on Online payment options for SaaS (includes those supported in UK)
This is flawed from the start.

1. Many people will only use a CC online for the additional protection it allows.

2. Many people put all their spending on CC for the various point / bonus schemes they have

3. This limits you to UK people only. Surely the purpose for most people creating a web app is to reach a global audience

smiler··on What really happened aboard Air France 447
I do wonder if passengers knew what was happening. Many might have been asleep. It sounds like there was a fair bit of turbulence on.

It looks like from the report that none of the cabin crew raised any concerns, so I'm wondering if people were pretty much oblivious and they went quickly.

smiler··on Why TechCrunch is boring, SAP is not, and the world has gone mad
Yes, give me tips on _how_ I can get into getting involved with SAP development.

I have done plenty of integration with SAP in terms of processing IDOCs and I understand some of the business processes in SAP on the manufacturing side - but how can I go beyond that and understand SAP even more.

http://www.sapremotelyaccess.com/ - this site provides SAP on a hard drive, do you think it's legal? I'm guessing not!

smiler··on Why TechCrunch is boring, SAP is not, and the world has gone mad
I tried to download this trial - it 404s
