smegger001··on Nvidia shares are down after report that its OpenAI investment stalled
Grok even if it were technically superior is hampered by it being owned and run by a mercurial racist narcist who in drug infused mania keeps accidentally turning it into Mecha-Hitler in attempts to make it fit his political views or turning it into a generator of child porn. No one in their right mind wants to have their product associated with that kind of liability. Who wants an ai agent that starts spewing great replacement theory at their customers?
smegger001··on Amazon closing its Fresh and Go stores
The burgers are fine at the one accross the road from my job but the Burger King here has to most bland frys I dont think they salt them at all they are crispy but lack taste.
smegger001··on Microsoft gave FBI set of BitLocker encryption keys to unlock suspects' laptops
it the natural results this site catter not just to tech nerds but one chasing venture capital money. its an inudustry that has never seen a dark patern it didn't like. we have gone from "don't be evil" to "be evil if makes the stonks go up"
smegger001··on Microsoft gave FBI set of BitLocker encryption keys to unlock suspects' laptops
if cosmic ray bit flips were so rare then ecc ram wouldn't be a thing.
smegger001··on So, you’ve hit an age gate. What now?
Who decides where the art erotica boarder is? There is plenty of content that would straddle that border, I have seen art that could legitimately called pornographic and pornography i would describe as art. Who decides? And then you have prudes Florida Texas red states trying to prevent remove any thing from an .edu and would happily ban the .xxx entirely and would find any .art suspect and probably ban it.
smegger001··on Happy Public Domain Day 2026
Sort of like how the movie Charade staring Carry Grant and Audrey Hepburn is public domain (due to failure to file back when that was required in the 1970's) but the soundtrack is not. So the music is in the pubic domain only when played in the movie but played separately the music is still protected.
smegger001··on CEOs are hugely expensive. Why not automate them? (2021)
we automated fortune telling a long time ago

smegger001··on Experts explore new mushroom which causes fairytale-like hallucinations
yeah before potato they had lots of lots of turnips and rutabagas, it is little wonder they went out exploring the world looking for anything better to eat. the new world gave tonnes of food not just nightshade family plant mentioned earlier (gp left out eggplant btw) corn, sweet potato, chocolate, sunflowers, and pumpkins, squash, peanuts, pineapple, cranberry and turkey.
smegger001··on Show HN: Stop AI scrapers from hammering your self-hosted blog (using porn)
maybe some proof of work scheme to load page content with increasing difficulty based on ip address behavior profiling.
smegger001··on Purdue University approves new AI requirement for all undergrads
realistically you can't ban computers for home work as you dont control the environment. and as for banning them for exams that may work for most of the humanities math chemistry and physic, but good luck trying to teach a computer science degree without computers, or graphic design, or any of a number of of programs that are reliant on them if you want student to be competent with standard tools of their trad which are on computers. audio engineering computer video editing computers
smegger001··on The AI-Education Death Spiral a.k.a. Let the Kids Cheat
Well that and decades of being the only industrialized nation not carpet bombed in a world war we have been riding on that and being issuer the global reserve currency for decades.
smegger001··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
Game of thrones problem wasnt going on too long quite the opposite. The show runners were assholes to the author of the books their show was based on and he wouldn't work with them anymore then when they got an offer from Disney they decided to cut the show short and finish it one season and cut major character development to get to the pre determined ending resulting in people having sudden character changes or clever characters start carrying the idot ball.
smegger001··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
"Maxflix" sounds like a name for a pornstudio but it is i guess better than the alternative of "NetB.O."
smegger001··on Microsoft won't let me pay a $24 bill, blocking thousands in Azure spending
obligatory xkcd is today's oddly enough. is OP Randle Monroe?

https://xkcd.com/3175/

seriously though customer support from mega corps is almost non existent anymore unless you are big enough to have lawyers negotiating your support contract for you or you have a social media fallowing bigger than some world leaders.

smegger001··on Peter Thiel's Apocalyptic Worldview Is a Dangerous Fantasy
I dont know "billionaire realestate mogul and serial criminal gets elected president" is the quick bio of both Lex Luthor and Donald Trump. Larry Elision buying up Hawaiian islands sure looks like a Bond Villian if you squint a little.
smegger001··on How did the Win 95 user interface code get brought to the Windows NT code base?
Grandma, if she is on linux I probably set it up for her and left myself ssh access so I can update/fix it for her. Katie from HR shouldn't touch settings she should file a ticket and wait for the helpdesk monkey or IT to fix it.
smegger001··on Figure 03, our 3rd generation humanoid robot
Human form robots are a case of Jake of all trades and master of none. Sure I have a dishwasher thats more efficient at doing the job than me but I still end up doing dishes because the cast iron frying pan can't going in there without ruining the polymerised layer of oils that have been baked into it and i would have to repeatedly oil and reheat it and stink up the house with smoke reseasoning it afterwards, and I have hand wash the thermos and travel mugs, and dishwasher arent good for the sharp knives and etcetera etc etc... sure the rumba can vacume very efficiently but it suck at gating around furniture leg or gaps to small for a 14'' diameter circle to fit through so I have to vacume all of the bits it can't get to. Sure the a robot lawn mower can do my yard very efficiently but it cant move the childrens toys out of the grass or open the gate to the front yard or close the gate to keep the dogs from running out the gate once its open. Specialized tools suck at edge cases. Human form robots if they ever works (big if) can do all of the edge cases and take advantage of all the tools made for humans I already have to do all of the those other jobs.
smegger001··on Way past its prime: how did Amazon get so rubbish?
Not if its all being sent to the same address as always
smegger001··on Offline card payments should be possible no later than 1 July 2026
I know its not uncommon at small business to ad a surcharge for using cards on purchases below a certain dollar value rather than a discount for cash.
smegger001··on The strangest letter of the alphabet: The rise and fall of yogh
No but they do eat at them.
smegger001··on The strangest letter of the alphabet: The rise and fall of yogh
Also read (future tense) and read (past tense) being pronounced differently despite the same spelling.
smegger001··on Rand Paul: FCC chair had "no business" intervening in ABC/Kimmel controversy
problem is who gets to decide that both sides are bing presented fairly? do you think that Fox Newsmax and OAN are going to be under the same pressure to give the liberal viewpoint as MSNBC and CNN will to show a righting viewpoint?
smegger001··on Nvidia buys $5B in Intel
well the question i answered was "Why would anything that isn't Intel implode" and an AI winter and another dotcom boom would do that to everyone not named Intel.
smegger001··on Nvidia buys $5B in Intel
a plateauing in AI development leading to another AI Winter causing dotcom bubble 2 electric boogaloo.
smegger001··on EPA Seeks to Eliminate Critical PFAS Drinking Water Protections
Most people low and middle class people I have met my whole life drink unfiltered tap water unless there is a reason not to (safety or particularly foul taste). you might be in a bit of bubble. Not that it matter though as most bottled water is just bottled tap water anyway.
smegger001··on Everything from 1991 Radio Shack ad I now do with my phone (2014)
my cheap budget android smart phone has a removable battery micro sd headphone jack, the ads well that a function of what apps i chose to install, firefox with a adblocker and beig selective on my apps a i encounter minimal ads, thrid party apps well i have F-droid open source app repository (and at one point installed the amazon app store on my last phone) all i needed to do was check a box on a system settings menu. the IR blaster i do admit i haven't had on a phone/tablet in year but even in 2014 that wasn't common and my tv's streaming stick has a Bluetooth/WiFi remote app.

surveillance is mostly done a network level so not something my phone can do much about other than use tor enabled apps

smegger001··on Everything from 1991 Radio Shack ad I now do with my phone (2014)
sure if you don't mind waiting around anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour for a transaction to be confirmed you can replace cash. sure if you don't mind your every transaction being published on a immutable public ledger and linked to your wallet. don't get me wrong it has its place and use but its not anonymous or quick cash is both
smegger001··on Hollow Knight: Silksong causes server chaos on Xbox, Steam, and Nintendo
i mean on the one hand yeah on the other its not that big of a technical problem. having one game vs hundreds well torrent trackers have been doing that since forever, and yeah you would need super seeders but isnt that still less load than have to run a http or upt based download server?
smegger001··on Hollow Knight: Silksong causes server chaos on Xbox, Steam, and Nintendo
What I don't understand is why Steam and others don't use a torrent-like protocol on their back-end to reduce their bandwidth requirements large numbers of customers downloading the game at the same time. Back in the day WOW used used it for distributing large patches it seems to be a solved problem.
smegger001··on Meta Freezes AI Hiring After Blockbuster Spending Spree
I would imagine there is some sort of incentive structure for the megamillions being offered by meta to these people not just throwing all of the money at them upfront. Payout structed around meeting measurable goals not just show up and collect fuck you money. Or maybe it is silcon valley redux and they will set on the roof with big head what do I know.
