smcin··on Scientists stunned by children's lung recovery in ultra low emission zone
Doesn't it depend on the mix of diesel/petrol/electric? In particular many cities ban or restrict diesel.
smcin··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
Ok so a basic version of adding a second stop, on a route using public transit.
smcin··on Nine PBS sues Iron Mountain over blocked access to archival data
Nine PBS is the St. Louis, Missouri, affiliate.

Transit App allows you configure both your walking and cycling speeds. Works great (will show you 15-20min walking), generates lots of options on how-to-get-there (e.g. bike-on-bus, Uber to train station), gives more accurate ETAs. Also instead of reducing "public transit" to a binary, it gives you much more granularity in enabling/disabling which bus/tram/light-rail/mass transit/train options, and even which specific bus route numbers to prefer.

Conversely, as a cyclist, Google Maps infuriatingly will refuse to route you along an expressway, even when it's the shortest or only route without a huge detour. e.g. Lawrence Expressway where it crosses in an underpass under Central Expressway. This is a long-standing known issue with Google Maps routings for cycling mode.

Yes. Transit App allows you configure both your walking and cycling speeds. Combine that with selecting which other methods you allow, and you get lots of options, and more accurate ETAs.

What do you mean "but with a waypoint”? What happens if you route on public transit without a waypoint? Do you mean indirect spaghetti routings that seem ok to Google?
smcin··on A California aquifer may have crossed the point of no return
Yes, and during the declared drought of 2020-3.
smcin··on A California aquifer may have crossed the point of no return
So, the other 25% does not all go to cattle, certainly not California. Some fraction of that alfalfa is exported in containers to China/Japan/Saudi, for their cattle. Doing that from a semi-desert during a declared drought (2020-3) seems like pretty obvious proof that the agricultural cost of water is distorted and too low. If any of that was artesian water, then it's even worse.
smcin··on Restaurants recommandations from Google always suck
Restaurant reviews and recommendations is necessarily an arms-race, and once a site gets good traction and reputation, it gets overrun with paid fake reviewers. Then the site has to decide how much resource to spend on maintaining integrity.

Local trends vary hugely by country and year, so claiming "the best addresses are found from Instagram & Tiktok" is not true for SE Asia, TripAdvisor still has more coverage and reliability, whereas for SE Asia restaurants, Google Maps is a graveyard built from mid-2010s business directories.

smcin··on Your Friends Don't Like You And This Is My App.
The app sounds interesting but you need to fix the post title.

smcin··on A California aquifer may have crossed the point of no return
When I try to find out what % of California's alfalfa production is exported, I get conflicting numbers, some as high as 38%, some much lower.

Residential users' water bills aren't (currently) affected by datacenter-related demand, unlike their power bills which are.

The resource contention for water is between datacenters and agribusiness (or other industrial users), not residential users.

Instead of being sarcastic to GP's post, we could try to find a succinct explanation of how water rights are owned/sold/taxed in the US. This seems to be a patchwork quilt by state, county, seniority and related legislation. But anyway, datacenter usage of water isn't impacting residential users' water bills.

smcin··on Error Led to 400 Noncitizens Voting, New Jersey Governor Says
Not multiple Presidential elections, possibly not even one Presidential election. A glitch which briefly existed between June 2023 - June 2024, before that Presidential election.
smcin··on Error Led to 400 Noncitizens Voting, New Jersey Governor Says
No they didn't allow 6,600 to vote, in NJ. The article says that: "and nearly 400 cast ballots". Not 6,600. Due to a glitch which briefly existed between June 2023 - June 2024, which will be investigated and was already fixed.

And the article acknowledged they clearly clicked that they were noncitizens and not eligible to vote. Hence it was not intentional. Hence it's pretty obvious you would never have gotten anything near 6600 voting. And again, the glitch was fixed in June 2024, before the Presidential election.

smcin··on Warning to millions as toxic air lung-penetrating particles across 10 states
"Bad air quality warnings this week in ten US states" is the underlying headline.

Please don't quote the Daily Mail, it's notorious.

smcin··on One million passports leaked online
That seems irrelevant. The most commonly used ID document for many things in the US is a driver's license; it's issued by the states, not federal govt, so what.

Similarly you could argue that addresses and zip codes are assigned by the USPS not directly by the federal govt, so what.

Combine this with date-of-birth and phone no. and you have a very small set of sufficiently near-unique identifiers (even if that wasn't the intent of the SSN).

One big mistake was not to legislate (at any point between the 1930s and 1980s) to criminalize third parties from using the SSN as unique identifier, as is done by other countries.

Imagine if the East German Stasi had merely outsourced surveillance to data brokers and credit bureaux - different regime, same effect.

smcin··on One million passports leaked online
I meant online. Lower-value types of fraud, like e-commerce, prepaid mobile phone bills.
smcin··on One million passports leaked online
So what prevents people applying for loans or doing identity theft, in other countries?

No, the title only links to https://arstechnica.com/ . That's why I posted the right link for you.

Well, that combined with the expectation that the recipient would also try that daily challenge, then presumably respond with comment/message/reshare comparing how they did.
smcin··on TSME no longer available on AMD consumer CPUs
You didn't post the article link, it's:

https://arstechnica.com/security/2026/06/users-cry-foul-afte...

Users cry foul after AMD stripped memory crypto from its consumer CPUs

AMD’s stripping of TSME from consumer CPUs appears to be a deliberate, covert move.
