smadge··on Ask HN: What are the big success stories of AI/ML so far?
Targeted advertisements
smadge··on The case for energy optimism
Laziness is efficiency. People drive because they are lazy and driving is the most efficient use of their resources. People also walk because they are lazy and walking is the best use of their resources. Driving is so prevalent because 1) we don’t incorporate the full cost (social, environmental, etc.) into driving, 2) driving is often the locally (individually) most efficient choice while being globally (socially) the suboptimal. We should engineer and environment where the globally optimal choice is the lazy choice.
smadge··on How recursion got into programming: intrigue, betrayal, and advanced semantics
I do love recursion, however is static allocation of activation records sometimes a useful feature (e.g. for safety critical or embedded systems)?
smadge··on Google officially launches Equiano subsea cable
Google has been building undersea cables for 14 years.
smadge··on I've said it all before but here we go again
These hypothetical particles can be disproven by experiment; they are falsifiable. However it is very expensive and there’s no reason to believe they exist.
smadge··on CA County Warn People to Shelter in Place Because of Tesla Megapack Battery Fire
My thought was that a failed flywheel would be locally catastrophic but as long as you are not building homes right next to them, it would be safe for the surrounding community and not inconvenience or put civilians danger.
smadge··on Backend for Front-end
If the API were a REST API then the client would only need to make 1 call to request the screen (representation of a resource) in a format (media type) the client expects.
smadge··on CA County Warn People to Shelter in Place Because of Tesla Megapack Battery Fire
I wonder if the hazards from chemical batteries tips the scales in favor of otherwise less economical flywheel energy storage.
smadge··on Google Surveys Sunset
“Google is deprecating search.”
smadge··on Aerodynamics of Gravel Bikes
Could this be true for walking but not for biking? The human body is adapted to carrying its own weight while walking, but not adapted to carrying significant weight on the back. But while biking the body is supported by the bike, and largely only the legs move.
smadge··on Woman sues after DNA from rape kit used to arrest her
The article doesn’t say anything about the legal team claiming the DNA is protected by HIPAA. The DNA is evidence. The distinction is that it is evidence for a crime in which the woman is a victim, not evidence fro a crime in which she is the perpetrator. One of the issues at stake is that mixing up the two will disincentivize rape victims from reporting the crime committed against them (because the evidence collected to investigate the rape could later be used against them)
smadge··on Prometheus: Fuel from the Air
On the contrary it would likely kill large brick and mortar businesses like Walmart who depend on large surface parking lots and massive public investments in car infrastructures.
smadge··on Oncall Compensation for Software Engineers
I’m oncall today for a 5m response SLO service. I went out for lunch and went shopping. I carried my work phone and laptop around with me.

I’m not expected to “pull” responsibilities from a chat room; pages are pushed to me. If someone needs to get ahold of me they are supposed to page me, not message me.

Edit: that being said, oncall outside of business hours does limit my activities, such as hiking, biking, camping, traveling, and I would of course appreciate 100% time or time and a half.

smadge··on Boeing looked for flaws in its Dreamliner and couldn’t stop finding them
The 737 MAX didn’t crash because it wasn’t manufactured to the specified standards. It had a flawed design. No amount of precision can fix that.
smadge··on Do the Real Numbers Exist?
True but then the question should be “how well does this fake thing model this real thing?” Not “does this fake thing exist?”
smadge··on Do the Real Numbers Exist?
Numbers aren’t real.
smadge··on The new hire who showed up is not the same person we interviewed
It’s true, but if the incentive for the employer is just to terminate, and there is no other consequence, then there is no dis-incentive for the fraudulent employee to keep trying until they find someplace their deception is unnoticed.
smadge··on Why are we still tailing log files?
Splunk is mentioned in the image showing 30 or so other logging services. It’s a crowded market.
smadge··on We handle 80TB and 5M page views a month for under $400
The website is for downloading 3D graphics assets, which are typically fairly large files.
smadge··on My values, howled into the wind
Children should be encouraged to advance as far as they can in any subject they show aptitude and interest, including art, literature, biology, engineering, etc.
smadge··on The internet needs better rules, not stricter referees
Most newborns do not rely on commercial advertisements to learn how to satisfy their needs and desires.
smadge··on SQL vs. NoSQL Is the Wrong Distinction
SQL is a dialect of a relational algebra. It assumes a relational model. It is used to query relations.
smadge··on Amazon's Controversial 'Hire to Fire' Practice Reveals a Truth About Management
The important part is if managers have discretion over who to fire.
smadge··on Winding down of Alphabet’s Loon causes job cuts
Transferring to a new role within a large company is a completely different process than applying externally.
smadge··on Go is a great programming language
I think panics in Go are highly discouraged, like using unsafePerformIO in Haskell.
smadge··on Young female Japanese biker is 50-year-old man using FaceApp
NEO: Right now, we're inside a computer program?

MORPHEUS: Is it really so hard to believe? Your clothes are different, the plugs in your arms and head are gone, your hair has changed. Your appearance now is what we call 'residual self-image'. It is the mental projection of your digital self.

NEO: This... this isn't real?

MORPHEUS: What is 'real'? How do you define 'real'? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain. This is the world that you know.

smadge··on A hacker got all my texts for $16
> Phone companies never signed up to be the guardians of our digital lives

The parent comment addressed this point. This is not just about 2FA. SMS users expect their communication are private, except (debatably) by the courts with a warrant.

smadge··on REST vs GraphQL vs gRPC
The web has a standard for identifying resources, URIs. One nice thing about URIs is they can be URLs. A single integer id doesn't even identify a user since if I give you 3 you have no idea if it is users/3 or posts/3, or users/3 on Twitter or users/3 on Google, or the number of coffees I have drunk today.
smadge··on How prepared are we for the next giant solar flare?
In this scenario you would have to rebuild all of civilization. I do not think modern civilization could survive the loss of the entire electrical grid.
smadge··on Firefox replaces Google Analytics with fake no-op in strict tracking protection
Integrating with Google Analytics on the server-side as opposed to the client-side has always been available. Developers just rarely do it because it is easier to add a JavaScript snippet to the page.
