smadam9··on Ask HN: How many servers did you have/need at your startup's launch?
I'm not sure there is a one-fits-all answer here - specifically regarding disk space & bandwidth.

Are you saving HD video files? Then you will probably need a data store connected to your web server.

Are you just allowing people to post text, small images and such? In that case, 1 server could easily cut it.

With proper software configuration, and a decent hardware config, you can go quite a long way with 1 machine.

Can you provide any details? Maybe someone can help out with your specific question, since the general question you've asked is quite difficult to give a proper answer to.

smadam9··on Get a review of your website. Launched today.
How is that similar? I didn't see any opportunity to compare websites on criticue.
smadam9··on Get a review of your website. Launched today.
Cool idea. Great job on launching - I'm sure there were many things you'd like to clear up and fix for a "proper" launch, but you finished something and you got people using it.

As many people said already, it would be great to know the difference between "Add comment" and "Submit review". Seems like they could do the same thing.

Keep polishing it, and then post a changelog somewhere - it's always nice to see the list of bugs people have worked through at the early stages of a site. It's also really motivating for the developer as well.

smadam9··on Thinking of Selling on eBay using Paypal? Think Again
I thought my case with a virtual product, and a clear fraudulent act was bad. After hearing about this, with a physical product, it makes a local electronics dealer seem much more appealing.

This is the last thing I want to see on the front page.
smadam9··on Show HN: kenHub - anatomy learning platform
Site looks like it will be very helpful for students/people learning anatomy.

After completing your demo, I joked with a colleague of mine that "I'm already closer to being a doctor".

Would be a great tool for universities, as well as primary and secondary schools. Remembering the names of bones in the body when I was 14 wasn't very enjoyable; this would have made it much more interesting for me. Not to mention that it harps on multiple senses which would have helped me get a better score when I was 14 ;-)

It's back up. Was down for ~30 min.
smadam9··on Yes, I was hacked. Hard.
iCloud would surely block consecutive, failed login attempts. From the post, reading years and years, opens up the possibility that it may have been something the hacker was following for some time. Therefore, he would have been blocked, but may have come back in 1 week to try again.

The possibility is a bit far-fetched, but it exists. The likelihood that this was actually the case is extremely low.

smadam9··on Yes, I was hacked. Hard.
I'm sure most feel bad for the guy, but although the hacker's actions were malicious, that doesn't allow the victim to just get off the hook for having a silly password - if that was the case.
smadam9··on Yes, I was hacked. Hard.
"Brute-forced" was a bad word choice.

Typing-the-most-common-passwords-with-numbers through the interface style. Basically guessing from the top password list.

smadam9··on Yes, I was hacked. Hard.
The strength of the password is relevant in the scenario where the password was actually brute-forced through an interface. If it was jesus01 (or something else common - typically religious), then it may be an easy hack for the hacker.
smadam9··on Yes, I was hacked. Hard.
>>7 digit alphanumeric

...could mean anything from myacct1 to iS2xd45

Since the password is no longer in use (only assuming), it would be interesting to know what it was - perhaps the reason that it was hacked was that it simply was easy to brute force due to common dictionary words?

Just throwing an (possibly wrong) idea out there.

smadam9··on Why I Don't Do Unpaid Overtime and Neither Should You
What about the part where programmers work overtime, but not because they are demanded to?

I consistently see programmers, even in my own team, who happily stay 60-70 hours per week because the idea/concept they are working on means something significant to them.

I find this phenomenon to be the exception of what your post has mentioned. Although the post was mostly accurate, I encounter this exception on a daily basis.

While those 60-70 hrs./week aren't at 100% efficiency, the idea that a programmer will stay the extra time to produce high quality work while maintaining their own personal life says a lot about their view of their job and career. To some, it's just that - a job. However, others see it as an art (just as any profession, I suppose) and strive to increase their skills - they understand that invested time equals increased knowledge and a more refined skill set.

smadam9··on Ask HN: How do I start freelancing?
From my experience, my first jobs were from people I was connected with. Usually it was a small job building a quick website for a friend, or their boss, or a friend of a friend...you get the idea.

Even though those seemingly unimportant jobs were all I had, I was grateful because I knew they would lead to more spectacular and promising prospects.

As expected, almost a year later, I was landing great jobs thanks to my quick, small jobs at the start. People starting seeing that the jobs were finished, people were happy etc.. Although my work is now in another realm, those qualities hold true anywhere.

Try to find some jobs in your own network, see if anyone knows someone that needs a website built or even just a simple button designed. That's how I would start again if I had to.

smadam9··on I Launched My Startup Yesterday, This Is How The Hectic Day Went
Although I can program already, I'm sure most people would agree that James's idea of putting a post on his learning experience of Ruby would be an interesting read.
smadam9··on I Launched My Startup Yesterday, This Is How The Hectic Day Went
To add to bdg's response....

I've experienced 12designer's project posting and they have been separating by category and putting a minimum project price on projects within specific categories. The price can be raise, but can't be lowered. A minimum price could help standardized the playing field.

To quote bdg: "take with it what you will"

smadam9··on Web Startup Calculator
In my opinion, none of it was clear without the video. How can one launch a website without a basic layout that is self-explanatory? And to launch a website for something that takes 5 min in Excel to make? I still can't see the benefit. It takes longer to learn his interface than to just make it yourself.

smadam9··on A Year On Hacker News
Great post, and thanks for the read.

I'm about 6 months (daily-->hourly page refreshes) into HN and I've read some of the most incredible articles here. I feel the same way you feel, and agree on your point of "few people are remembered for being well read.....start shipping...".

With that boost of morale, my decisions to put a lot of things I've read here into practice seem all the more rational.

smadam9··on Ask HN:Best Development Laptop?
Lots of MBP/Air users here... :-)

However, at my office we've just ordered some Lenovo x121e's. All have an i3 processor, 8GB RAM, and SSD's. The speed is great, but the screen isn't so large for those of you that need large screen real estate (11.6"). We ordered them for portable "workstations" or something powerful and speedy enough for basic development tasks.

Battery life is great at about 6-8hrs, however the price can get quite high depending on your configuration.

HN Meetup in Berlin would be great.

I'm considering coming to the Meetup in Cologne, but if we can schedule one in Berlin, that could be 2 great meetups in a matter of months!

smadam9··on Ask HN: Recommendations of best resource to learn Linux - Debian dist.
Thanks for the suggestions. I looked at LFS and Gentoo as alternatives and they seem like viable options as well. I'll be giving it a try.
smadam9··on Tools for startups along their lifetime
Has a lot of great information for anyone interested in startups. I have to agree with the rest also, would be nice in a wiki format. However, it seems that it was just thrown together as a mash-up of resources - kind of a first stage document. Hopefully with some more effort it can be a wiki page.
smadam9··on Ask HN: Review my website (dog owners)
Cool site. You need more content about the site and what it is (as mentioned already). Also the email link on the bottom right is broken. Perhaps you can expand the detail on the dog's profile - favorite treats, likes/dislikes etc. I think dog-owners would enjoy this information.
