My next desk, I've been done with wires.

slowtrek··on Wall Street’s ‘Private Rooms’

There might be other ways to know about the data in advance?

Yeah, just have lunch with a few of the insiders. That's the issue and will always be the issue.

slowtrek··on Alphabet in Talks to Buy Cloud Security Firm Wiz for $33B

The Chrome sale will pay for something like this it seems.

slowtrek··on Alphabet spins out Taara – Internet over lasers

"... very hard time competing with simply laying down some optical fiber."

You end up learning this in your own home. Some things are fine with a wired ethernet connection, it's really only my laptop and phone that use wifi.

slowtrek··on When the Dotcom Bubble Burst

Cisco did not innovate out of their first incarnation. Nvidia evolved out of gaming gpus, and they didn't do it because they were looking for trends.

slowtrek··on Let's knock down social media's walled gardens – Tim Berners-Lee

"One way to do this is to mandate that social network platforms follow new standards. Another is to quietly build an alternative world using these standards and let people realize that it is better — just as they did when leaving restricted online services AOL and Prodigy for the freedom of the web."

We would all have to take on the role of the evangelist in a serious way. I really love that he wrote this article.

slowtrek··on Microsoft paywalling features in Notepad and Paint

I'd say it's similar to spellcheck. We don't spell very well anymore, and soon we won't get any better at writing.

slowtrek··on Show HN: 10 teams are racing to build a pivotal tracker replacement

Serious question, Grunt or Gulp?

slowtrek··on Docs – Open source alternative to Notion or Outline

Shared Google Docs.

slowtrek··on Docs – Open source alternative to Notion or Outline

That's really gross. I guess then everyone thinks they need to use it because all these startups use it, but it's really just a simple notepad app with many alternatives.

slowtrek··on Edgar Allan Poe's life was a mess. But his work was in his command

Was just reading about Churchill's alcoholism in a bio and looks like Poe was right there with him on that front. My favorite Poe visual is the The Masque of the Red Death. Probably wrote it blasted out of his mind.

slowtrek··on Male octopus injects female with venom during sex to avoid being eaten

It's not worth wondering. A core tenant of evolution is that it's a random mutation, and that some random mutation is favorable. It's very Life of Pi, you have to make your own truth out of this because it won't make sense.

slowtrek··on Docs – Open source alternative to Notion or Outline

Notion is not an example of delightful software and it is very much one of the most reproducible apps ever. I don't know how they managed to make it fashionable amongst startups, but it's certainly not because it's an innovative product.

slowtrek··on Show HN: Nash, I made a standalone note with single HTML file

Good idea, that's available on many browsers:
