slowin··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
> How will that deter someone wanting to break into your house or trying to rob you?

This isn't something I worry about but, a dog? Maybe a gun? Certainly calling the police isn't going to stop a crime in action.

Incarcerating people has a net negative effect on society and does little to "scare" people into not committing crimes. It's also extremely costly, taking money that can actually improve society in general and lower crime rates by improving education, social services and public infrastructure.

slowin··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
Npm dependencies resolve at install time though, so some of the pinned versions may have changed ownership or otherwise been modified since the author pinned them. With the curl | bash solution you're getting a singular supply chain packaged by the author at release time.

While I don't think piping curl into bash is the most secure, npm installing has proven time and time again to open yourself up to supply chain attacks. At least with curl you know that you're getting the supply chain put together by the software author. With npm, every single library is a vector for attack every time you update.

> What exactly is the better solution to handling areas plagued by high crime rates?

Investing in the community and public services?

slowin··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
I don't know that I've ever seen such unified opposition from the public on both sides of the political spectrum as being against these cameras (and data centers). It gives me hope that for the first time in my life, it looks like we might pump the breaks on increased surveillance and create a permanent culture of resisting it.
slowin··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
Traffic cameras certainly have the same issues, but the others aren't aggregated and searchable by the police, they're for personal use.
slowin··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
Given that the roads are not law enforcement's property, and in fact public property, they would require public approval and voted on legislation for the police to install cameras on them.

> And those areas are still part of the public.

No, it's almost exclusively private land.

slowin··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
> It is a search of law enforcements own property.

The roads are not law enforcement's property and my private car on a public road is private property that requires a warrant to search. These things should be totally banned, but even your argument is wrong since Flocks don't mask just the road, they record everything in their field of view.

slowin··on ICC judge on what U.S. sanctions mean for her and global courts
The Right to resist is a well-known cornerstone of liberalism, and yes Israel has been chipping away at it since its formation and Nakba.

slowin··on ICC judge on what U.S. sanctions mean for her and global courts
How many services take Monero? It also does not solve your health insurance being taken away. This situation is a very good use-case/advertisement for anonymous crypto though.
slowin··on ICC judge on what U.S. sanctions mean for her and global courts
I agree that she should not have an Alexa, but how do you pay for Proton, your ISP, your electricity bill, hosting... when you are debanked? Not having health insurance is also not solvable with technology unfortunately.
slowin··on ICC judge on what U.S. sanctions mean for her and global courts
> "You start to lose services from American companies, Amazon, Google, potentially Apple, whatever it may be,"

> Her credit cards, issued in the Netherlands and Canada, were canceled. She has managed to keep some bank accounts, but says her banking services are extremely limited and even small transfers can be blocked.

> One of the most serious examples is her health insurance. Prost receives coverage through AXA, the French company that provides insurance for the court. She says the company has refused to pay her claims even though it is not legally required to follow the U.S. sanctions.

This is beyond chilling. You could conceivably self-host some alternatives, although you could easily lose your domain name and internet access. Maybe in a fictional future some sort of crypto currency could help with the de-banking. I don't think there's a solution for losing your health insurance though.

All because the US doesn't want Israel to be held accountable in the ICC. I don't think we've ever been closer to fascism and it's in service for a foreign country (not that it would be ok if it wasn't!).

slowin··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
I wouldn't trust anything Tesla says:

slowin··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
Interesting and thank you! Just like I'd like a "dumb" tv that I could just plug a Linux machine running Kodi into, I'd like a car that was 100% free from smart features, yet gave me the hooks to power any of the systems with my own software/hardware.
slowin··on [dead]
I wouldn't make a PR to this project. If it was valuable, I'd just tweak it for myself if I needed to. I also MIT all of my OSS because I believe in empowering users as much as I can.
slowin··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
I'd love to push back, I'm not sure what that looks like though. I can't even get an open source/open hardware phone that's decent, let alone a car.
slowin··on [dead]
I don't know about "based", seems like the kind of file I'd immediately delete then run my coding agent. I don't want project maintainers "nannying" me, power to the user not the developer imho.
slowin··on How to speed up the Rust compiler in September 2026
Very cool projects! I agree, desktop apps are one of the areas that Rust beats Go. It's too bad though, since I feel anything with a heavy GUI like this can benefit from a rapid iteration cycle which is painful with Rust.
slowin··on How to speed up the Rust compiler in September 2026
I've moved from Rust to Go for most things because in the era of agents, being able to iterate quickly on a project is a huge advantage and Rust is way, way slower than Go for compilation. There are times when Rust is more appropriate, but for the vast majority of things Go is perfectly fine.
slowin··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
I'm happy to support anyone pushing for open models, local models and publishing their innovations out in the open.
slowin··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
I agree it would be very cool if they were open sourced, but the article is talking about the KV cache technique which if I understand correctly is open source (or at least the white paper is published).
slowin··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
I would say that there are very few people on earth that I trust less than Sam Altman, Dario Amodei and Elon Musk. Also my own government claims to have used Anthropic models to bomb a girls' school in Iran. If you combine US regulations with sociopathic private companies, you get into a worst case scenario for humanity imho. Again, I'm thankful to China or any other entity pushing open models, local models and even distribution of this technology.
slowin··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
There's no "pulling back" things that have already been open sourced.
slowin··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
How is it just assumptions? They provide the data to back up their claims.
slowin··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
I'm also grateful to the Chinese labs for providing workarounds for the walled gardens that the US based AI companies are attempting to create.

Does anyone know if there are any distillation datasets available? I'd love to see these distributed on BitTorrent. I think it's critical that AI be democratized and not isolated in the hands of a few private companies.

slowin··on Pacing the Frontier is not the actual goal for AI labs
I wouldn't call it "half-baked" when it's a well known playbook regularly leveraged by large companies.

> At best you'll get legal restrictions for particular US industries which are especially risk-aware. The CEOs of those industries will counter-lobby to be able to use whatever model they want.

Companies won't spend the money and time to lobby to use different models and Anthropic knows it.

> Since there's plenty of public attention on this issue, achieving meaningful regulatory capture will be difficult.

I don't have high hopes. This is also why Anthropic is pushing the "regulate or ai will kill you" angle.

slowin··on Pacing the Frontier is not the actual goal for AI labs
I think this is very clearly a regulatory capture play. Anthropic/OpenAI/X see that there's very little moat around training (especially with distillation) so they want the government to build the moat for them.

It's also worth remembering that there is zero percent chance that entities like the US military are going to be pacing anything. What Amodei and his ilk are aiming for is a highly regulated industry where they control the political barriers and the ability to sell SOTA model access to state actors that have a monopoly on violence. It's the worst possible situation for consumers and citizens. Thankfully I don't think they can put the cat back in the bag and Chinese and other models will keep progressing as a counterbalance to the techno-fascism Anthropic is aiming for.

slowin··on Cf: The Agentic CLI for the Cloudflare API
You can get a binary compiled by the author or a trusted source and none of the dependencies can change out from under you. This isn't possible with an interpreted language where the dependencies are resolved (often from dubious places like npm) at install and update time.
slowin··on Cf: The Agentic CLI for the Cloudflare API
I think these are both examples that help prove my point. Neither of these tools benefit the user by being in Python and distributing a runtime just for a CLI tool.
slowin··on Cf: The Agentic CLI for the Cloudflare API
It's not just the complexity. You're also vulnerable to supply chain attacks via NPM. It's also performance as you don't need the entire javascript runtime just for a CLI.
