Some problems are so complex that you have to be highly intelligent and well informed just to be undecided about them. -Laurence J. Peter

Kruger and Dunning’s explanation is that incompetent people lack the skills they’d need in order to know they’re incompetent. The plural of anecdote is data.

Your finger is the safety. Glock pistols have never had a safety. They have no higher rate of negligent or accidental discharges than pistols with safeties. If you are qualified to carry, a round in the chamber is what saves your life. Racking the slide(improperly) to load a round is the number one cause of jams. Nervous people tend to "ride the slide" which is pulling it back, then easing it forward. It should snap forward to strip the round from the magazine and chamber it properly.

What town/state are we talking about? Is it a mining town where the mines are shutdown? Is it a mill town where the mills are shutdown? Is it a auto manufacturing town where the cars went obsolete? Agricultural town where the farms are gone?

I used to attend cross-team meetings with a guy (works for AWS now) who was a tech lead and meeting facilitator. He gathered the agenda, presented during the meeting, assembled notes during the meeting, and distributed the notes via email at meeting conclusion. He keyboarded the entire time, looking up at the projected display. Fastest touch typist I recall seeing.

+1 here. I purchased the original SimCity and soon after the original SimEarth. Loads of fun with both.
slowhand09··on Turn your backyard into a biodiversity hotspot
I prob have 20 kinds of weeds, 20 native species of plant. I've had whitetail deer, eastern red fox, river otter, snapping turtles, box turtles, muskrat, brown rat, bald eagle, turkey vulture, black vulture, crow, osprey, blue heron, white heron, green heron, snowy egret, redtail hawk, sparrow hawk, tons of songbirds, racoon, possum, black squirrel, grey squirrel, chipmunk, multiple water snake species, rough green snake, ring-tail snake, black racer, milk snake, worm snake, blue-belly skinks, toads, frogs, eels, blue crabs, sand crabs, horseshoe crabs, shrimp, oysters, clams, multiple species of jellyfish, rays, skates, pipefish, striped bass, catfish, crappie, bluefish,... I'm pretty sure I've missed several. Where should I start to become biodiverse?

“The real problem is that programmers have spent far too much time worrying about efficiency in the wrong places and at the wrong times; premature optimization is the root of all evil (or at least most of it) in programming.”

My current environment... we develop on a production environment.

And our toolchain... put it this way. We went from no documented procedures, to several. And the several... have no date, no version, no author, no revision control...

Friday is my last day. I am so happy.

slowhand09··on Hoax school shooting calls keep happening, and there's a pattern (October 2022)
One motive I can see is to inflate the reports of school shootings. How often is news reported, then "if" there is a debunking, in print its inside the back page whereas the initial report was a lead on the front page. Starting a story is much harder than stopping a story, especially when motivation is considered.
slowhand09··on Why do bees die when they sting you?
I don't know this fo ra fact. Actually I'd never even heard this before. I'd surmise the act of pulling a stinger out of another insect may be less than the amount required to pull the stinger form the bee's body, thus preserving the bee.
slowhand09··on Why do bees die when they sting you?
I can vouch for the veracity of bumblebees. I disturbed a nest and was chased by a couple of bees. I took 6 hits from one bee. 1st one felt like a rock hit me. Each after was similarly unpleasant. And after the 2nd each one was while I was in full sprint. I eventually escaped by jumping in a car.

Nice, instead of considering the possibility and doing a 10sec goggle search, you brand me a conspiracy nut. And invite me to leave. This response could be characterized as promoting division.

Avoiding critical thinking is a serious problem in todays society. Instead of considering the possibility and perhaps expending a trivial amount of mental effort, you accept what you've been spoon-fed as fact.

I find this humorous as your profile says your company performs "Due Diligence" for other companies.

slowhand09··on Are super-rich people just better at making money?
So this redistribution... How will this ever be fair? If I work harder and smarter, save/invest instead of spending recklessly - how is it fair that the fruits of my effort are taken by the government (who incidentally created all the laws and loopholes we have now) to redistribute as THEY see fit (also known as Buying Votes). How do you redistribute my house (expensive due to location) to others living in less expensive places? How about my car (expensive and fast). It costs more, drinks more fuel, and looks nearly new. Never mind that I paid a gasguzzler tax on purchase, sales tax, smog inspection since new(another tax in disguise). It looks new. But I care for it, handwash it, polish it, seal it, personally - my labor. I roundtrip it 90miles a day, so it as 135k miles. But it looks new. MY LABOR. Nobody offered to wash/wax it for me and make some cash. Just like I shovel snow off my driveway. And rake leaves. Nobody wants to do that work. They just want their part of the redistribution.

Y'all worry about these millionaires and their money, yet here you are, hoping to learn the secrets of success from Y-Combi companies... and become wealthy yourselves.

I'm doing pushups at the rate of 10000/year.

But I'm only doing them for one minute. So about 7 pushups.

For me, the rate is what is important.

I'm pretty sure thousand or 10 of thousand of Egyptian artifacts were looted, probably quite often by Egyptians.

Take at look at many regions of the African continent. When ethnic groups or even groups they perceived themselves different would wipe out tribes or societies, artifacts were taken or destroyed.

There are many problems to fix.

You may be too young to remember...

Several years ago I hear a guy on the radio telling people to be very careful. There was a place where people could get your name, your address, even your phone number, all for free... if they knew where to look.

Listeners called in, some incensed that the MC/DJ whatever was even talking about it.

After a few minutes, he exposed the secret. It was... the phone book.
