sloreti··on Tcl/tk vs. the web
"Porn industry in the 1990s invented : chatrooms, e-commerce with visa card, dynamic contents...."

Can someone knowledgable of the history of the web confirm this? I assumed the industry played a major role in the development of some web technologies, but can the rise of e-commerce, for example, be mainly attributed to porn?

sloreti··on Ask HN: What will self driving cars do to real estate?
This might seem minor compared to the other real estate trends that self driving cars will bring about, but it's interesting to think about what might happen to all the land in urban and suburban American that is currently on-street parking. Hopefully we'll see some creative uses for it, such as gardens, bike lanes, or outdoor seating for cafes, instead of just letting it lie underutilized. Maybe on some streets we'll get something similar to the woonerfs [1] in the Netherlands, with streets being shared by cyclists, pedestrians, and slow moving self driving cars.

sloreti··on MIT professor studies high-wage retailers
Did you read the blog post? Greenspun disagrees with the NYT columnist's interpretation of the Ton's study, saying that companies shelling out higher pay for more highly trained employees is not necessarily beneficial to labor. The final paragraph reads:

"It is worth looking at the reader comments on the NYT piece. By cutting labor costs as a fraction of sales, Costco and similar companies should be reducing the share of the economic pie enjoyed by labor and enlarging the slide of pie enjoyed by owners of capital (e.g., the Costco shareholders and/or the executives looting from them). But the liberal readers celebrate this move in the direction of less equality because they are dazzled by the headline dollars/hour number paid to the remaining handful of workers."

"In more recent history, as a global average, about four or five women reproduced for every one man"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the same as saying one man, on average, will father a child with about four or five different women? I suppose given the timescale being discussed, "recent history" may mean the last few centuries, but this average still sounds very high to me.
