slics··on Open Letter from the OpenID Foundation to Apple Regarding Sign in with Apple
It’s not an issue with $15k or if apple can pay or not. I think it’s the issue of Apple vs. Open in general. Apple’s echo system is closed to the world.
slics··on A Learning Secret: Don't Take Notes with a Laptop (2014)
I still use a paper notebook at work to track my day to day action items. It feels so gratifying when you simply check a task as complete. I tried using a tablet for that matter, I just felt like I ignored my action items as it felt they were out of reach. I have to always look for them in the tablet, when in the paper the page is looking at me without me have to look for it.

In addition, I work in secure labs and electronics are a big NO, notebook on the other hand it simply works. My 2c. Pen and paper it is still relevant and it always will be.

slics··on Google Cloud Networking Incident Postmortem
Is automation good or bad, that is the question. For context, let us think in programming context of a B tree.

Google seems to have created oversight of systems, processes and jobs to be managed by more automation with other systems, processes and jobs.

System A manages its child systems B, which in turn manages its own child systems C and so on. Now the question becomes, who manages the system A and its activities? Automation of the entire tree is as good as the starting node.

Be mindful and make use of automation only of systems that will not be the owner of your business demise. Humans are and should always be the owner of the starting process. Without that governance model, you get google with 5 hours of down time or worst in the near future.

slics··on Arabsat-6A mission [video]
Amazing and beautiful engineering. Imagine the satisfaction and the feeling you get knowing that you are part of a team that made all of that soar through the sky and back home safely. /applause
slics··on Facebook Asking for Some New Users' Email Passwords
It’s interesting to note, that in order for a feature or capability to be implemented, it has to provide value to the end user. So at the planing phase of this feature, didn’t anyone in their right mind thought that this was a bad idea. Given the current situation that Facebook (Fakebook) is in with security missteps why even invest time and money just to hope that users (at least the ones that are concerned) won’t complain. Hope it’s not a strategy.
slics··on Most Wasabi Is Fake [video]
Keep in mind, food tastes different in different regions. When I first arrived in the states, I had no idea what to do with ketchup or mustard or foods in the microwave bags. Back home (Europe) we grew everything ourselves in the garden and there was no need for processing the food or spices. In the states the food no longer is grown for taste, but for quantity. Looking at the video I appreciate the garden foods, the flavor and uniqueness. You must have an acquired taste for that kind of food/spice to really appreciate it and enjoy it.
slics··on They Thrive on All-Meat Diet (1929)
All humans are unique in their own way- thus what might be working on some humans it might have a different effect in some others. As an example: My wife has horrible migraines almost every other week. She has followed so many different diets that worked for some others but didn’t even improve her migraines at all. Simply put, be mindful about what you read and what you put in your body.

slics··on Show HN: Website for pickupgames around you
Thank you for the feedback. I will try to maybe display what events are available around your area without registering to the site. That way if people want to attend any games they can chose to register for an account prior to joining the event.
slics··on Show HN: Website for pickupgames around you
Shows a view of games / events around you (if any available - based on your current location and zip code) or you can choose to host your own by selecting to make it private or public.

Any feedback appreciate it. Thank you.

slics··on How the Valley treats experienced people
If one thinks 35+ is to old to code, well I have news for you. At 35+ you learn how to manage time and prioritize better. Life throws another ranch in your bucket of problems, marriage and children. When you are young, you are hired as an engineer to work 40 hours, which we all know very well that working for startups that means 80 hours or you are not putting good effort. Well with a family that’s not possible, as you know that 40 hours at work means that exactly. The rest of the 40 hours are meant to be spent taking care of your family.

So if one more recruiter doesnt offer the job interview, it’s because they don’t understand what life is all about. If you have no time to socialize and network or raise a good family, soon we will be left with a society that only focuses on how to better themselves and not mentoring or preparing the next generation of smart people. Talent is not born, talent is made and it starts with a good foundation, called FAMILY.

slics··on Clearing Up a Few Things About Facebook’s Partners
It all boils down to convinience. People are so easy manipulated with just a little incentive. Just keep one thing in mind. If at any given time there is a product or service that has no cost or fee to use, the first thing should pop in your head is: “There is nothing free in this world.” If you hit Accept / OK for a free service / product the blame is on you/us, not them.
slics··on DigitalOcean launches its container service
They are by far the simplest cloud platform one can use. They for sure honor the best principal (KISS) in Software Development community.
slics··on Ask HN: As programmers, why are we still going to the office?
Without office space there is no networking. Without networking there is no real means to find a better job when the time is to move on. Humans are meant to collaborate and share perspectives. But again, it depends on what career path you choose on the next venture.
slics··on China Announces Punishments for Intellectual-Property Theft
What about when the Chinese country itself violates the IP rules? They can’t just punish themselves. So ironic, they will punish a few on the cover, but they will continue their old practice of steeling under the covers.
slics··on I quit Instagram and Facebook and it made me happier
Next thing on the list - when you walk in the house, turn off your phone. Only then you will feel as if you are free, and the free time it’s yours to do whatever you feel like. You soon realize that there is so much you can do without the social media in your fingertips. Enjoy it.
slics··on Don’t work “remotely”
Remote working = “Cast Away” by Tom Hanks. At some point, even the best of us need the human interaction or we start losing our other needed skills. (My 2c anyways)
slics··on AT&T CEO: State net neutrality and privacy laws are a “total disaster”
If they don’t like something, they say change the law. If we don’t like something, they say well, you have to pay more for better service. Really AT&T?
slics··on What the hell happened to Darius Miles?
WoW. I can only say this from the bottom of my heart. It takes courage, persistence and a hell lot of dedication to pull yourself up, especially when everyone else is trying to pull you down. God Bless you man. Fist Up!
slics··on Company using Mechanical Turk botches U.S. Senate campaign finance records
There are so many factors in play here. Government issues a contract for scanning and loading all the paperwork. Contractor wins contract (prime), he then hires sub-contractors to do the their work, which in return can hire some other sub-contractor. If you think about it from a requirement perspective, government asks for apples, by the time those requirements get triaged three levels deep, they get oranges. Government attitude for a shitty product delivered, you can still make juice out of the fruit we got. They still keep pumping yearly, millions of dollars for that same minimal viable product.
slics··on Serverless Microservice Patterns for AWS
Same. I have tried multiple times.
slics··on Teens who refuse to use social media
There was a 5-10 min window for teachers to walk from class to class. So yeah we were there the entire time, 8AM-3PM. Same thing exists in the lower grades in US, K-5. We don’t see those kids complaining either.
slics··on Show HN: I'm 12, learning JS, and wrote Wolfram's cellular automaton in Node
This tells you that talent can be discovered at any age.
slics··on Twitter’s deletion of its FB app caused old cross-posts to temporarily disappear
I guess that works or might have worked when Cybersecurity wasn’t as equally important as it is now. In addition, people are getting smarter and more aware of what happens on the “internet’s” these days. So that approach of allowing anyone accessing everyone information had to run its course and reach the end of line.
slics··on Teens who refuse to use social media
I came from a small country in Europe and schools followed a more strict policy. We were not allowed to change classrooms from 1-12 grade, the teachers switched classrooms. Because of that process, we created a bond with the classmates and kind of became like a family and protected one another. There was bullying, but it was minimal because the non-supervision time window was small during our 20 min lunch break. I promise, if the western schools follow the same policy all that pushing and shoving of kids during class transition will not happen. Just my 2 cents.
slics··on Blackmagic eGPU – Thunderbolt 3 external graphics processor
Let’s see: MacbookPro 15 with dedicated Video Card $2500 + $700 Blackmagic + other dongles + a new bag to carry all that ( search Apple dongles video on YouTube just for a laugh) I think we get the point. More is better, and I don’t mean more materialistic items, I mean as in spend more $. Not pointing the obvious but come on Apple, make a damn gaming laptop already.
slics··on “I'm basically giving myself a permanent vacation from being BDFL”
It takes someone dedicated to do what you have done for this long. You need the vacation more than anyone else. I wish you had a tip bucket somewhere and I’ll gladly donate for some of your vacation cost, simply a thank you tip for your tireless effort.
slics··on A system to help you remember more of what you read
The challenge this days with remembering anything is the fact that we no longer train our mind to remember or store anything. We are slowly learning how not to remember anything. The convenience tools such as Alexa or Google will one day make us even forget our own home address. Convenience is the Evil of Everything. (yep just made that up on the fly).
slics··on Ask HN: Today's Google doodle “Garden Gnomes” using 50% CPU when displayed?
Already made the switch. I can say this, you need to be persistent and ignore the urge to go back to google while are using DDG.
slics··on Microsoft acquires Github
The beauty in all of this is that you still have the power to continue make use of github, or you can chose another provider if Microsoft doesn’t meet all of your needs. In contrary, as a business decision this was a good move for Microsoft. Now they can invest in integrating Azure and people can deploy directly to Azure.
