slededit··on Company Update
The main benefit to owning your own car is instant access. To retain that a significant portion of these cars will be sitting in parking lots just the same as if their owners had drove them.

Queuing theory forms a mathematical basis for analyzing the problem. So far its been heavily analyzed and applied towards dynamic pricing models. But if you want to replace cars people need to feel confident they are going to have a ride available in a short amount of time and not be price gouged.

slededit··on I was mistaken for a call girl
If you follow the story, then for years she was just like you. Same restaurant for years on end with no issues. All was fine until it wasn't.
slededit··on Hey Google When did I ask you to read my purchase details
> During a Census (the procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population) I willingly share my personal details such as Name, Age, Gender, Employment Status, Salary details to the agency so that they can take a better decision in providing the government schemes and services like how many new roads to be built, Town Planning, Employment Generation etc.

If you don't willingly the government can compel you to by force. The census is not a good example of voluntary information giving which is why its questions are a contentious political issue.

slededit··on Being collateral damage in the culture wars of the West
It’s pretty clear she wants to follow her current path despite the obstacles. She’s been hearing the same criticisms for years now. The only change is it’s escalated from random internet people to the NYT.

I don’t really see her as a victim and I don’t think she sees herself that way either. Certainly she feels she was dealt with unjustly - and is fighting back.

Suggesting it would just be easier if she stopped is accurate but that’s not how change is accomplished.

By the way I carefully avoided charged terms like “victim blaming” because I don’t feel the larger debates in the west matter here. She lives in China with its own different set of challenges.

slededit··on How the Government Shutdown Warps Time Itself
It’s been abused a lot to call elections when advantageous for the incumbent. A decade old law made for more regular term durations but there are still loopholes for the ruling party to unilaterally declare elections.

Failure to pass a budget is an automatic no confidence vote still which I think works very well.

slededit··on Being collateral damage in the culture wars of the West
Let’s accept your premise that she wants to be treated as a sex object - and still do tech.

Why shouldn’t she have that right?

slededit··on 'We're going to electrify the F-Series,' Ford exec says
Interesting. Just looking at the diagram of the 2019 Silverado that’s a lot of mixing of dissimilar metals. In the ford it’s a pretty clear demarcation point that’s easy to electrically isolate.

It will be curious to see how all the brands stack up corrosion wise in the next few years.

I guess GM couldn’t stomach using an aluminum bed after the 2016 ad campaign against ford.

slededit··on 'We're going to electrify the F-Series,' Ford exec says
I’m guessing your not happy with Ford and GM’s all new aluminum beds then?
slededit··on Android vendors, don’t kill my app
Which is why the absence of a reason in the file is indication it was killed.
slededit··on SpaceX to lay off 10% of Workforce
Are we just going to completely ignore the 17 year reign of Jeff Immelt? GE Capital gained enough prominence to destroy the company under his reign. Jeff was the one that acquired one of the nations largest subprime lenders in 2004, primed perfectly to maximize losses in 2008.
slededit··on Anonymous Google Employees Voted Arms Control Persons of the Year
And a much higher chance of actually destroying the target. The US dropped more tonnage of bombs on Vietnam than the entirety of WWII, and yet random destruction is rather ineffective.

The big fish is always going to have challengers from somewhere. You may be right about the average case but the world is quite large.
slededit··on Sears has another chance to avoid closing down
Even if they were established they’d have a tough time getting financing in the .com crash. A bit of luck is always necessary.
slededit··on Sears has another chance to avoid closing down
There's significantly more information in 2018 or even 2008 to indicate Amazon was worth that valuation. A companies potential has to be adjusted by risk if you want a good valuation, and in 1999 there just wan't enough evidence. This is validated by it dropping dramatically after the bubble popping.

In fact they were only saved because he had secured financing mere months before the collapse, had that not happened Amazon would be listed among the likes of Pets.com.

slededit··on The 30-Year Mortgage Is an Intrinsically Toxic Product
Everyone is born short housing - you need a place to live. We’re neutral on private jets though. You can get along without them.

It’s generally advisable to cover your short positions.

slededit··on Netflix Takes Down Episode of Hasan Minhaj’s Show in Saudi Arabia
There is no Supreme Court footage at all. They refuse to allow cameras in the chamber.

There’s no law enforcing this except those which give the judges full control over their proceedings. They could let CNN in tomorrow if they so decided.

slededit··on Netflix Takes Down Episode of Hasan Minhaj’s Show in Saudi Arabia
I think John Stewart’s show was a little more intelligent. His discussion with Jim Cramer comes to mind - he actually convinced him and Jim changed his show noticeably afterwards.

These newer shoes exist mainly to speak to the already converted.

slededit··on Bill Gates urges U.S. to take the lead in nuclear power
Criticality events don’t end up as massive explosions without careful design to keep the parts close enough for enough time to release the energy. Otherwise the force of the reaction will move the material away from each other and “snuff out” the reaction.

They can still release substantial amounts of radiation though, and one such event caused the death of Louis Slotin during the project.

slededit··on Intel unveils a new architecture for 2019: Sunny Cove
X64 was designed with this in mind. All non-active bits must be the same value (a so called canonical address) or the processor will fault. You can’t use them for flag bits unless you make sure to clear them before dereferencing memory.

slededit··on Why we make up jobs out of thin air (2012)
And if the remaining competitor becomes a monopoly and price gauges the entire market? Would not suffering increase in absolute terms?

In a highly interconnected world it’s not sufficient to show a job doesn’t produce direct value to prove it is pointless.

slededit··on Why we make up jobs out of thin air (2012)
Your rebuttal is a much stronger argument than what was in the linked article. Unfortunately I could only reply to what was written there.

Of course I’ve seen poor branding bring down companies so I don’t consider it a made up job. Certainly if the company goes under due to lack of customers all the employees will suffer.

slededit··on Why we make up jobs out of thin air (2012)
Only with hindsight can you say that. Up until the day the discovery was made they’ve contributed nothing of use to the suffering. Some go their whole careers chasing dead ends and never discover anything.

Besides the article explicitly includes academia as a made up job.

slededit··on Why we make up jobs out of thin air (2012)
> So, who has a “make belief” job and who has a real job? Here is a hardship test: if you stopped doing your work, and nobody replaced you, how much suffering would that cause?

By this definition any form of research or speculative R&D is a "make belief" job. Despite the dramatic advances made by people in those occupations on any given day if they went home no additional suffering would result.

The premise of this piece suffers from immediacy bias and is in my opinion ridiculous.

slededit··on Powerful Photos of Life in the Old Glasgow Tenement Blocks – 1969-72
This BBC documentary shows what its like in more recent times. Its better, but not dramatically so. Most importantly the despair and lack of hope is still there.

slededit··on Facebook’s Secret Rulebook for Global Political Speech
John Stuart Mill had higher criteria than mere harm. The words spoken in the French revolution lead directly to the deaths of nobility. The fact they lead directly to the harming of individuals did not mean they should not have been spoken. The words spoken at a trial may directly lead to the imprisonment of the accused, should those words too not be spoken due to the harm they cause the accused?

The classical line has been at incitement. It understands that humans are prone to irrationality in the heat of anger. But outside of that it is understood that some harm may be necessary for justice or other ideals to be served. Speech is the mechanism we use to weigh the costs of our actions.

slededit··on I Got Banned from Photographing Arch Enemy
> In the past, artists like Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and even The Foo Fighters, have gone beyond merely assuming that they have this right, choosing instead to force concert photographers to sign contracts where they have to, quite literally, surrender all of their rights over the photos. Aware of the fact that most photographers are not exactly versed on legal terminology, that photo pits aren’t great places to read contracts, and that many photographers simply can’t afford not to shoot a big band, artists have been able to profit from the many photographers that, for whatever reason, end up signing their rights away.
slededit··on NCC: 64-bit C compiler (and preprocessor, assembler, linker, etc.) for AMD64
Don't be confused by "C" compiler. This is a K&R C compiler that can compile legacy programs from the 70s on x64 machines. Great for software archeology.

This serves a completely different purpose than GCC or CLang.

slededit··on I Got Banned from Photographing Arch Enemy
Its extremely uncharitable to assume he signed something. He even mentions in his article that other bands do require signing a license agreement to photograph but this band did not.
slededit··on Russia Tests 27-Mach Hypersonic Nuclear Glider
That is the "control room" for the entire country when in conflict, not for the missile itself. Thankfully they aren't in a direct war where it needs to be filled.
