skystorm··on SIM Cards Must Die
I don't think you literally "vote" troll, it was meant more symbolically. :)
skystorm··on Rumor: Nexus tablet is a “done deal”
The "tablet of the highest quality" has been around for a while, when the quoted price was still $250. So it's possible that this status has recently been superseded by the new target price (and thus downgraded processor).
skystorm··on Judea Pearl, big brain behind AI, wins Turing Award (Nobel Prize in Computing)
Well, as the linked article says, he basically coined the term "Bayesian network" and developed much of the underlying theory (e.g., which kind of independencies it can/cannot capture). This was arguably a crucial step for many areas of modern AI in terms of dealing with uncertainty, cf. the full ACM press release: http://www.acm.org/press-room/news-releases/2012/turing-awar...

He is also credited with first describing the ever-popular belief propagation algorithm for approximate reasoning in Bayesian networks and graphical models in general.

Edit -- I found this to be a nice, short exposition: http://ftp.cs.ucla.edu/pub/stat_ser/r368.pdf

skystorm··on Nvidia Is Joining The Linux Foundation
You probably meant "negligible" ;) But I otherwise agree that nothing much will come of this.
skystorm··on Ralph McQuarrie Remembered
Amazing indeed. I would pay for large printouts / posters of some of these -- sadly the shop on the site does not seem to carry anything like it...
skystorm··on Torvalds: More bitwise tricks
I am aware that Linus has that reputation, but glancing over the post and comments, it seemed like a good, factual discussion in this case. Did I miss something?
skystorm··on Game Developer Gives 7-Year-Old Best Birthday Present Ever
Incidentally, the game in question (Edge) is part of the current Humble Bundle, including a version for Android devices. I've already had quite a bit of fun with it on my way to work. :)

Edit: Kinda obvious, but here's the link http://www.humblebundle.com/ (only 4 hours to go!)

skystorm··on ShareLaTeX
Great idea and I like what I'm seeing so far. I assume it's based on pdflatex, as opposed to latex + dvipdf / (dvips + ps2pdf) ?

FWIW, I just imported a document I'm working on to check things out. It gives a bunch of warnings (underfull \hbox) but other than that works fine on my system -- on your site, however, I can't get to the PDF, it keeps jumping to the Logs screen with the warnings...

skystorm··on A revisionist history of the best laptop at any price: the Cr-48
The Cr-48 discussed here was given out for free (sort of like a beta tester program), so that was by definition subsidized. ;)

And as far as I could tell, the "actual" Chromebooks that went on sale later one have been priced comparable to their non Chrome OS counterparts, so I don't think there were any subsidies in play.

skystorm··on Show HN: Fed up with WebEx, so we built a way to screen share in under 20 sec.
Very nice, worked flawlessly when I just tested it with a friend (other than having to kill the java process by hand in the end). Thanks in particular for supporting Linux!
skystorm··on Mega-man: The fast, fabulous, and fraudulent life of Kim Dotcom
Thanks for that link, I had completely forgotten about the "Freiherr". Blast from the past...
skystorm··on Fun with math: Dividing one by 998001 yields a surprising result
Care to share? Would be handy to have for my daughter... :)
skystorm··on This is a Bad Time to be an FPS Fan
Yes, it was lacking any story whatsoever, but from what I remember (it's been a while) the singleplayer levels were very well designed, fairly nonlinear and had tons of secrets.

(Still, the real meat was in the multiplayer, of course)

skystorm··on How can I teach a bright person with no programming experience how to program?
For completeness, SICP in .mobi format for Kindle: https://github.com/twcamper/sicp-kindle
skystorm··on Google +1 Chrome extension tracks https traffic
Thanks for the link. Has anyone tried this and the Disconnect extension and can share how they compare?
skystorm··on Ubuntu should zig to Apple’s zag
I was in the same boat and ended up switching to Xubuntu -- and I don't regret it for one second. I get all the good stuff ("just works") with a sleek, customizable UI, that also happens to be very frugal wrt. system resources. It's a win-win really. :)
skystorm··on Google+ is now available with Google Apps
I would argue that you are probably the exception from the norm -- most users have only one account and would probably consider it a major inconvenience to have to log in multiple times across different Google properties.
skystorm··on Google Labs no more
No, Gmail Labs is separate and is not being shut down.
skystorm··on What Google's Famous Cafeterias Can Teach Us About Health
> I haven't seen bikes or scooters outside of these two offices however.

FWIW, Santa Monica has a number of cruiser bikes to quickly cover the few blocks between the two local offices (or to go for a ride along the beach ;) ). And I think I saw a scooter at the Irvine office...

skystorm··on Samsung Galaxy S II – Over 3 million units sold in 55 days
It could have been many more, if only the sold the damn thing in the US... ;)
skystorm··on HP TouchPad: Shipping July 1
However, Asus' tablet is either out of stock or sells out very quickly, so one could argue that there's not much need for marketing from that standpoint.
