skynode··on New Surface Pro
Considering how long you've been here, it's really disappointing that you could bring yourself to write something like this on HN.
skynode··on What I learned from my startup’s failure
> The problem is that most startup books tell you what not to do, not what to do.

This is actually better. Because it means that the authors have had their failures (hopefully?) and are telling a practical story. It's subtractive but it works, re. Ten Commandments, via Negativa style.

It's actually much worse to tell somebody who'll probably be halfway across reading your book to jump x metres when the wind speed is just under y mph to achieve some z business effect.

Point is your context may not be somebody else's context, so it's much better to harp on universal principles which you violated in business than to show us a sequence of events which leave out the role of timing, chance and other unknown unknowns.

skynode··on Ask HN: In the next 5 years which markets will grow the most and why?
Second this.

We've just started to fully appreciate the possibilities of the Blockchain particularly. I was reading some academic paper on analyzing and querying blockchain transactions and I found it absolutely outstanding. I'm also keen on seeing what large commercial projects are built on the Ethereum platform.

skynode··on Ask HN: In the next 5 years which markets will grow the most and why?
Outcompete Amazon (especially) on prices? Waiting to see who'll achieve that feat.

That aside, there's a cost threshold beyond which it wouldn't makes sense to offer cloud services at such ridiculous prices. If anything, I actually think compute prices might increase in future as demand for cloud services become globally outrageous, from Alaska to Zagreb.

skynode··on The increased use of PowerShell in attacks [pdf]
Not really. The direction is clear; C# evolves with the times (still, the only version to have broken backwards compatibility was 2.0 because of Generics - which was/is a good thing) . Currently, it's at the very base, an object oriented programming language with powerful functional style features. The bureaucracy you're referring to is at worst (not for Java though) it's static type system, which again is a good thing under the right application scenario.
skynode··on Windows 10 S Will Not Support the Linux Subsystem
WSL is the best thing since peanut butter. Recently moved all of my dev command line work to the Subsystem. Even better, VS Code integrates it perfectly well.
skynode··on The increased use of PowerShell in attacks [pdf]
Bash was spectacularly intuitive while I was learning it. And err, ending a conditional `if` statement with `fi` is probably one of the most intuitive linguistic constructs ever in CS; no need to analyze whether we should end it with `end`, `finish`, `done` or (worse) `terminate`.
skynode··on The increased use of PowerShell in attacks [pdf]
> In fact I'd say super-verbose and somewhat convoluted languages like PowerShell (and C#, which I don't fancy much either --- nor its Java-ish ancestry, for that matter) may only appear to be more intuitive at first, but are actually hiding some quite nonintuitive complexity. The verboseness may make it easier to get started, but becomes a hindrance thereafter.

Some historical syntax ancestry aside, state-of-the-art C# is too classy and elegant to be in the same sentence with Java.

skynode··on Ask HN: For those programming 10+ years, what do you wish you knew 4 years in?
Take on bigger technical challenges and keep a notebook for writing down new concepts you learn along the way. Of course the notebook could also be in software. But write. It'll help you internalize stuff.
skynode··on Ask HN: For those programming 10+ years, what do you wish you knew 4 years in?
Expand your experience with C#, Python and JavaScript. Nothing gets past those three (you could add SQL to the mix). Take on as many projects as possible, preferably with increasing technical (not business) difficulty. If you plan on starting your own company, get in bed with someone with stellar business development/marketing skills, while you focus on developing/maintaining the product/service. Under this scenario, also retain the services of a good lawyer. You'll be happy you did.
skynode··on Visual Studio 2017 now fully supports Python and Django
I don't think there are any MS obstacles to running instances of Postgresql and Redis at the backend while developing on VS2017.
skynode··on America has become too anti-innovation
The social responsibility of business is to increase profits - Milton Friedman [0]

Let every entity play its role. For private enterprise, their selfish pursuit of profits under a regulatory atmosphere actually helps society improve on so many levels as a net effect.

That said, issues like this cannot be rigorously analyzed while ignoring the different contexts, changes in costs/benefits and the different periods in the historical development of the country. Thinking these background issues have remained constant will invariably lead to fallacies.

Finally, we may need to think about these matters differently; it's 2017, there are many ways of being innovative without restricting it to your national boundaries or geography. One could easily be accused of tunneling if she thinks that all American exploits of science and technology must happen within the boundaries of United States in this century to qualify as an improvement of American society.

The stage is bigger and the system has become orders of magnitude more complex.

skynode··on How Harvard Business School Has Reshaped American Capitalism
> I think it's led to Google having institutional ADD and has left them with countless failed products and others that have been neglected for years

You're missing the point. I think this is part of what defines their existence and probably their success; experiment with many different products/services (and do it quickly too), doesn't matter if you have 1 killer product for every 10,000 experiments.

skynode··on Ask HN: Best business advice for software developers
I'll never understand why developers almost always underprice themselves.
skynode··on Testing the Windows Subsystem for Linux
Apart from the new .NET Framework 4.7 and a few minor others, a bunch of features (e.g. Paint 3D) are not necessarily targeted towards advanced users. It would make sense to fragment some key modules we use as devs and make those available piecemeal without bundling features we'll probably never use with great features like WSL and the new Windows console. Essentially MS could give options just like it gives options about what to install on VS 2017 (for advanced users of course, regular users can have the default CU install mode).

I'm actually working on a deployment now. Though it's from OSX (so BSD?) to Windows via WSL. So far so good.
skynode··on What’s New in Bash/WSL and Windows Console
I think it's fine as is just so you even know/remember where you're running that command from. What's not exactly ideal is completely blurring the lines between both kernel syscalls.

skynode··on Removing Home Internet Is the Most Productive Thing I've Done
You're looking at a very specific case. My point is more general.

Some people tend to believe that a return to the old ways of no invasion of the zeros and ones of the Internet would make their lives better by some significant margin. They see some less digitalized folk and wish they could have that life because they also believe the lives of these folks are much simpler, more triangular, etc.

Nassim Taleb and a few others have advocated a disconnect from news. This makes sense from a knowledge building POV as some folks actually only know stuff about the world through mainstream media, which I believe is particularly unhealthy and misleading.

Disconnecting from the entire Internet however is a different matter. My point is that such a recoiling into a zero Internet shell doesn't necessarily confer any superior analytical abilities on anybody. It may help your sanity/peace of mind/mental health (depending on what your obsessions are)/etc.

And to your point about actual evaluation being separate from the information processing pipeline, I also disagree. More often than not you still need the various resources available on the Internet to aid in the evaluation of the data/information you have collected.

There's such a thing as a responsible/profitable use of the Internet and the gains are probably much higher than whatever any sound minded individual would gain from a disconnection.

skynode··on Removing Home Internet Is the Most Productive Thing I've Done
I disagree with the Internet is a tool... statement. The Internet is definitely not just a tool. It's a different type of consciousness; it's not completely mature yet as to approach the organic, human type, but it's definitely much bigger than a tool.

Your disconnection from it may help you rediscover your own consciousness and do things the old-fashioned way but it doesn't confer any superiority or higher levels of intelligence or higher information evaluation abilities on you.

skynode··on The Gig Economy’s False Promise
What isn't a scam these days? Scams have only become more modular and probably smarter; so there are scams targeted at simpletons (e.g. the Nigerian Prince Plot, which apparently still works af), the middle class (e.g. the importance of working hard at your 9-5 job so you can move up the ladder, probably pay off that mortgage and send your kids to college, both of which have a low chance of occurrence especially in SF & co.) and the elite (e.g. investing your money in 2/20 hedge funds, attributing more value to expensive wines, etc.)

At different points in your social and economic development, different modules of the scam program are working to deceive you and emphasize unimportant details rather than big picture perspectives.
