skratlo··on 1Password for Linux beta
This is one great setup, and you can change KeepassXC for any other thing, eg. https://www.passwordstore.org/
skratlo··on Differential Dataflow
This should be the top comment, reading through those docs is a terrible experience, I think the author lacks any didactics experience
skratlo··on Google disabled my husband's account
I don't think you're right.

> Facebook's identity verification

in real life, do you need to know the real name of the cashier and see their contract so you can trust them with your payment? You don't, you use common sense.

> Google de-ranking link farms

hey, haha, and what do we get instead? Monopoly on ad-driven search engine, great, I'd rather have link farms since I can easily filter those out with little brain-power. I can't do that with paid-for-propaganda

Now imagine we'd leave the way it was, people would learn how to deal with it, the same way you learned you can't leave unlocked bicycle in a city. It's a price to pay for anonymity, and we should all have right to be anonymous on internet.

skratlo··on Show HN: I built a Rotten Tomatoes-style platform for durable products
outdoorgearlab.com ? you must be kidding me, in their reviews, they leave out ~50% of competition, and their sorting of best product in category is apparently a bidding game, shifted just right to make the results believable. I do spent lots of time on researching outdoor products for my own needs, and outdoorgearlab.com is a joke
skratlo··on Show HN: I built a Rotten Tomatoes-style platform for durable products
Search doesn't work, it autocompletes but doesn't search
skratlo··on Show HN: I built a Rotten Tomatoes-style platform for durable products
Consider removing Google Analytics to protect your visitors' privacy, there's self-hosted open-source alternatives.
skratlo··on Kitty – A fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
Check out termite, it is, unlike Kitty, a no-bloat program. As of kitty, just check out it's source repo to get an idea of how messy everything it is, not to mention the horrible attitude of the author, it's like Linus^4
skratlo··on Tips for immersive video calls
So to summarize:

$800 dollars for what? "Immersive video call"?

And this one made me laugh:

> Prefer Zoom to most alternatives

skratlo··on Embedded PDF viewer in Firefox 81 supports filling forms
Which PDF forms standard is this?
skratlo··on When feature flags do and don’t make sense (2019)
> For example, consider the Facebook Android app, which contains code contributed by hundreds of different teams

skratlo··on The Presence of One’s Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity (2017)
What goals? So far those goals seem to be related to planet destruction via excessive consumption. Slowing down is what can save us from extinction.
skratlo··on Croc: Easily and securely send things from one computer to another
This is tech from alternative reality where we're not forced to use Teams, GApps and other shit. It's a reality where you "croc" a screencast via shareable croc URL, posted via matrix chat to your manager.
skratlo··on MonsterMash – A Single-View Approach to Casual 3D Modeling and Animation
This is such a heartwarming work, finally some good use for all the HW, a great, easy to use tool for story telling. It's also great that you chose to make this a desktop app, and facilitate sharing and exchange with files. Although, You could have packed all the data into single binary blob for easier sharing.
skratlo··on Preparing Our Partners for iOS 14
> Being a third party publisher

And what is it that you publish that helps humanity?

skratlo··on Placeholder – Offline Coarse Geocoder Backed by SQLite
More like super-coarse, I'm not sure how is this useful.
skratlo··on Single Page Applications using Rust
> literally anything you could ever want to use

...so but how's the quality of npm ecoshitstem? last time I heard you guys had some trouble in paradise, plus everything noteworthy is owned by either facebook or google, both having huge antitrust issues lately

skratlo··on Making Advanced GUI Applications with Godot
Yes, binary packages are convenience, you could be paying for those if you're lazy to build the open source from the source.
skratlo··on Making Advanced GUI Applications with Godot
Yeah well, but that's because of the env. you chose to use, that qt5-base etc. I mentioned? it includes header files. Add your compiler of choice and you're good to go. I've no idea what "SDK" are you talking about, but honestly, I'm pretty sure that includes tons of documentation, images, multimedia, etc.
skratlo··on Making Advanced GUI Applications with Godot
There is so much bullshit and lies about Qt5, I won't bother finishing that piece of crap:

Erik Engheim: Qt5 is 5GB Actual fact (on arch linux): qt5-base = 64.07 MiB, qt5-declarative = 24.72 MiB, qt5-quickcontrols2 = 8.56 MiB

> Try having somebody look at a Qt design you made. “Oops sorry you need a 5 GB download to do that. Oh and btw you need to register an account on a website, login and search really hard to find the free version.”

...blatant lie, etc. I won't bother, this guy is nuts. Thanks god for Qt, it has its quirks but on the desktop it's the best we can do to dev cross-platform

Erik Engheim: Consider Qt Creator IDE which is quite minimalist, without Qt which it requires to run, requires over 200 MB Actual fact: 108.03 MiB

skratlo··on Ways to make a web component
Sums up "state of the art" web we're using right now = absolute mess, bail out if you can, save yourself, stay sane
skratlo··on Ex-Googler's startup comes out of stealth with simple, clever robot design
yadayada, you're all robots, artificial humans, walking calculators. tell me what those low income workers will do when you take away their jobs?
skratlo··on Teleport 4.3: Modern Replacement for OpenSSH
Hey, tell your marketing people that they did a really poor job. Taking a stab at everyone's beloved ssh? Calling your offering a replacement for it?! Daring! No wonder you're getting all that hate here on HN
skratlo··on Show HN: Runnaroo – A new search engine
This is so on point, thanks for that. Pollution is indeed the right word for it.
skratlo··on Flutter for Linux
Yay, Macromedia Flash for desktop is here, made in Google, Dart instead of ActionScript, wow, just wow.
skratlo··on Publishers File Suit Against Internet Archive
But of course this has to be... America again, American Publishers, well, fuck of, self-serving is written all over you
skratlo··on The use of `class` for things that should be simple free functions
You're saying what? Doing objects that act just like closures? :)
skratlo··on REPL Driven Design
It's not REPL-driven design, it's REPL-driven development. You don't design by driving a REPL, that would be stupid. It seems Bob has lots of misconception and is blaming his poor design on the REPL. Haven't read such a hollow article in a while.
skratlo··on A first look at Unreal Engine 5
This made my day dude, thanks for that. Imma dropping everything now and going to make rounded corners button with WebGL canvas, using signed distance function in a fragment shader.
skratlo··on GeckoView for Android
Completely irrelevant, you're missing the use case. When you're using embedded web renderer, the point is that you are in control of the content, hence there's 0 security concern. If you don't control the content, then you're not secure with either WebView nor GeckoView.
